What the...? Highways clogged, students stuck at school, states shutdown, all for 2"-3" of snow??? What the hells going on down there? Doesn't anyone have 4 wheel drives? We had 6" of snow the other day and I came to a hill where a car couldn't make it up, so I went off the road with the Wrangler and passed him in the field. That's how we roll up here. Don't make me come down there people.:bang: 2.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
LOL....You and Bob Peck...Bring your ice skates....
It's not like driving in powder snow in the first place, and we don't have many county or DOT snow plows, etc. (most places none) so if it sticks on the roads it's gonna stay on the roads...Then it gets packed down into what become ice chutes. LOL. That's if it didn't start as ice. Some places had a shortage of road salt/brine for this storm, which I don't know how that happens but having some salt on hand is about as much as gets done. At least where snow is rare. In the NC mountains, say, they get much more frequent snows (and earlier) and so they have a little more equipment and build the roads for it. It's still not fun to drive up there in it though. 3.) luv2bowhunt - 01/29/2014
I forgot, your snow is much slippier than northern snow.:tu:
4.) bluecat - 01/29/2014
It also has a yellow tint to it and smells like apple pie.
5.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
I actually got honest-to-goodness powder this time. I can probably count on one hand the times that's happened. Was able to get it off the decks and the cats' blankets with a broom.
Tonight and tomorrow morning will be the real mess after a little melting and refreeze. :bang: BTW, the animals freak out in the snow here, too. Even the ones that have seen it before, LOL. It's really funny to watch one that has never seen it..:-) As far as deer, squirrels, etc. they hunker down for a day or so. You won't find a track anywhere. Even the possums and raccoons will take a break from raiding the garbage, cat food and other free meals. 6.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
It also has a yellow tint to it and smells like apple pie.
LOL...Not sure about the apple pie part, but I'll take your word for it...:p 7.) luv2bowhunt - 01/29/2014
Well whatever you do Swampy, don't leave the house, stay off the roads, hunker down. That powdery snow can be a silent killer.
You might be in for the long haul, could be several hours before that devastating 1" coating will melt. 8.) DParker - 01/29/2014
It also has a yellow tint to it and smells like apple pie.
Watch out where the huskies go... 9.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
The road up from my house to the main road is already ice. That's if I even try driving out my driveway. I've been stuck here for as long as three day, maybe four, LOL. I have just the right combination of sun and shade. :re:
But the stars aligned and strip steaks and shrimp were both on sale this week, so I stocked up. I'm eating the hell out of my famous lime steak with shrimp and cheese grits the next couple of days!:tu: 10.) bluecat - 01/29/2014
Cheese grits? Cheese grits? I can be there in 5 or 6 hours.
11.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
These are yummy. I make them with chicken broth and cheddar.
It's not often that grits (even cheese grits) come anywhere close to competing with a strip steak or shrimp on a plate, but these do. :tu: It's a hell of a meal...I don't know why some woman hasn't snatched me up... 12.) luv2bowhunt - 01/29/2014
Grits, yea I saw them once. Looks like runny tapioca that was left out on the counter too long.
A real meal has some kind of sausage or scrapple or mush or molasses mixed in there somewhere. Try some molasses on the grits, might help. 13.) bluecat - 01/29/2014

:td: Waste of stomach space.
Hopefully the NC governor will declare a state of emergency and get someone out there to rescue Swampy soon. This storm ain't gonna fix itself you know. 16.) Ventilator - 01/29/2014
I had scrapple once. buddy of mine from Air Force days. he moved to NC from Baltimore. That stuff wasnt that bad actually. (not sayin it was that great either :re:)
Better than a grit tho. 17.) CHRIS - 01/29/2014

Maybe if every one spread a little uncooked grits on the roadway:tu:
20.) luv2bowhunt - 01/30/2014
OK, I think I saw the problem on the news last night. The city of Atlanta was spreading salt on the bridges, AFTER they dragged the wrecked vehicles out of the way, so they could clear the ice.
Now up here we do that a bit different. We put the salt and anti-skid on at the very beginning of the storm, tends to cut down on the need for dragging wrecked vehicles off the bridges. Atlanta might want to send their Highway Dept. people up here for some winter maintenance meetings with break out sessions and such.:wink 21.) DParker - 01/30/2014

I was in that "Walking Dead" chaos they call Atlanta during this "storm". Bottom line is before I even got on the plane in Richmond we upgraded the car rental to a Lincoln Navigator (mostly for the extra sheet metal) and booked the hotel an extra night. We knew it was going to be rough. Turns out there was nearly 100% occupancy at all the hotels because the poultry and beef guys were having a convention. We stayed on the campus of Emory University at their conference center. Why the Gov of GA or the Mayor of Atlanta didn't close schools, close gov't offices and mandate a stagger of private businesses I can't tell you. What a crock of denial the next day met with the overwhelming cry of BS! from those who survived. 2" of snow fell promptly melted when it hit pavement (we were watching from the 22nd floor or our customer location), the sun went down, the temps plummeted into the teens and there was ice every-damn-where. 1.5 million motorists hit the same highways at the same time. The most popular but unsuccessful technique to extract oneself from a slip-n-slide seemed to be the "gun it for all it's worth" technique. Some guy was trying to burn a whole in the ice and ended up blowing the engine on his truck with parts and oil cascading from underneath. He got out to check the damage and fell face first on the oil covered ice. Took us 7.5 hrs to drive 9 miles to the hotel! At one point I trudged 1/2 mile through the snow to scout out and intersection up ahead and to buy beverages and snacks at a convenience store. I bought the goods and trudged the 1/2 mile back. My friend/driver had moved 10 feet. Uh oh. Saw things like a school bus loaded with kids flatten a stop sign and end up in a ditch. A tractor trailer moving rig with a large gash down the side and somebody's furniture and dishes strewn on I-85, more than one pedestrian get knocked over like bowling pins from out of control sideways vehicles. People using their floor mats as traction devices. One guy had the floor mats under the rear wheels of his front wheel drive vehicle (Darwin?). Mass "hockey style" flinging fists and bopping of head brawls at the gas pumps over who was next. People buying jugs of water, emptying them on the ground so they could fill the jugs with fuel. People who just literally stopped and put their cars in park walked and weaved amongst the carnage. One young mother had her little one perched on her shoulders as she walked. Ironically, you would expect all the bread and milk to have flown off the shelves (never understood that one) but it was beer that was nowhere to be had. Our goal was to get to the 12-pack chilling in our hotel rooms and calling our names. When we got off the ramp from the interstate onto Route 400 it got eerie quiet with no traffic. That's because the entire off ramp was strewn with vehicles and debris which we snaked through by God's good grace. 3 miles down 400 without a single car or truck driving we spotted a jack knifed tractor trailer fully engulfed in flames, it's driver sitting in the snow on the hillside on his cell phone. I'll never forget this one because it's the closest I believe I'll come to what Armageddon may look and feel like. 25.) DParker - 02/03/2014
Heck, there are parts of Atlanta that are close to Armageddon year 'round. Don't get out of your car (read that using the same voice to deliver the "Never get out of the boat" line from Apocalypse Now).
26.) luv2bowhunt - 02/04/2014
That's what I thought, complete chaos and a highway dept/gov't without a clue or a plan.
Maybe the GA DOT will get their heads out of their ............and get a program together for inclement weather. They should be prepared for ice, they get some every year. Yesterday was a good example of what happens here. It's the morning after the Super Bowl so no one is on duty for the snowplows I'm sure. It started snowing around 4:00 AM and by the time I headed for work around 6:15 AM it was snowing hard and we had 2"-3" on the roads. No one was plowing or salting so the roads were covered and slippery. BUT, everyone was taking their time and driving the way you drive when it's winter. All but one made it into our office, all without much help from PennDOT. Two different winter cultures for sure. 27.) Deerminator - 02/04/2014
It's astouding how many vehicals are on the roads durring winter storms down that way.
Just stay home people. :nta: Ditto what Luv2 says 28.) Bob Peck - 02/04/2014
Two different winter cultures for sure.
I heard so many excuses before, during and after but it all boils down to common sense and preparedness neither of which were in abundance. The Gov and Mayor claimed to be fully briefed and prepared but the morning of the storm the Gov they weren't mobilizing any assets and cancelling school but instead were attending a big media event. The Gov was presenting some award to the Mayor. That's not preparedness, that's glad-handing. A similar but less catastrophic event happened in 2012 so you'd think they would have learned but noooooo.
If it wasn't so tragic it'd be hilarious but during the event the equipment that could have had an impact was stuck in massive grid lock with the rest of humanity. 29.) Bob Peck - 02/04/2014
It's astouding how many vehicals are on the roads durring winter storms down that way.
Just stay home people.
I will never forget the abject faces of fear and the millions of white knuckles. During that storm it became apparent it didn't matter where you were from. Ice is ice. Driving on it is all about the lack of acceleration, lack of braking and playing the angle of the table top so as not to let gravity pull you into a bad situation. The sheer panic of running out of gas or sleeping in your car or the instinct to self-preservation made putting the car in park and walking the only (and dumb) alternative for hundreds. Never seen anything like nor do I care to again. Speaking of the Walking Dead ... the mid-season opener is this Sunday. :hb: 30.) DParker - 02/04/2014
You'd think that they'd have learned a lesson from the infamous mistakes of others when it comes to failing to mobilize resources when given ample warning that Mother Nature is about to deliver a smack-down to your town...
Whoa, calm down there miss. I did not hear of one death in West Chester from the storm, and the power was back on for almost everyone there in less than 24 hours. Way to hype up the gloom and doom, but it was OK. Worrying about the residents of West Chester having enough nourishment is melodramatic, most of them have enough fat on them to last for weeks. Give her a week off without pay to think about it. 42.) Swamp Fox - 02/12/2014
Well, it's started here 45 minutes ago. I already have an inch and a half. Within 15 minutes of the snow starting it was sticking to the road and people were sliding. I just barely made it back to the bunker.
It's a medium-wet snow coming down steady and semi-hard. The fun begins later, when we're supposed to get up to a half-inch of ice with power outages. I got up this morning and looked into the sky and saw the big bullseye moving into position right over the house. Good luck to everyone. They are calling this storm "catastrophic" and "deadly" here. We'll see. Someone just shot something in the woods behind the house. Probably an extra-furry animal so he could skin it for a hand muff, or crawl in it to stay warm. The cold goes right through you when it's wet like this. Stay by your radios, and watch the horizon for signal lights. This may be my last diary entry... :wink 43.) Deerminator - 02/12/2014

Ba-da-bum! :p
It quit snowing maybe three hours ago. I now have seven inches. :wink It's the famous "wintery mix" coming down now, which basically means dry sleet for all you keeping score at home. The ice (freezing rain) comes in overnight, and then it's snow and/or more wintery mix all day tomorrow. Nothing hanging on the trees right now, which is good news for the powerlines. Woo-hoo! On the other hand, in other news, Raleigh is the new Atlanta. :re: 48.) Deerminator - 02/13/2014

It missed us by about 40 miles. :)
51.) Swamp Fox - 02/13/2014
This morning there is between a quarter and a half-inch of ice on top of the snow (and some underneath) with a significant coating on the trees. Not the heaviest I've ever seen, but enough to be of concern. We had a little wind earlier and limbs were coming down. If we get more precip today the way we are supposed to, it's not going to be pretty. We wound up with about seven inches of snow before the ice packed it down a little, and temps won't climb much in the next couple of days.
I will be VERY lucky to be able to get out of here by Friday mid-day if we get some melting, though it wouldn't surprise me if I can't make it out to the road (or if main-road driving at night won't be safe) until Saturday. Crossing my fingers the power stays on til then. I have plenty of food, beer and dirty magazines... 52.) Swamp Fox - 02/13/2014
Now that I think about it/realize it is already Thursday...More coffee, please... my estimate of getting out of here on Friday is wildly optimistic...
53.) luv2bowhunt - 02/13/2014
