This is in the news from the past weekend:
Man dies after falling into lake while ice fishing A 55-year-old Billings man died after falling into Fort Peck Lake while ice fishing over the weekend. Garfield County Sheriff Frank Edwards tells the Great Falls Tribune ( http://gftrib.com/1fu5hGb) that Daniel Gilstrap and another man were ice fishing Saturday night when they became disoriented at about 11:30 p.m. and drove their all-terrain vehicles onto a pressure crack in the ice. One man was able to get out of the water, but he was unable to rescue Gilstrap. Edwards says the survivor suffered from hypothermia and frostbite, but refused medical treatment. ___ Information from: Great Falls Tribune, http://www.greatfallstribune.com I was out there on Saturday (in a different area) and was watching guys zip all over the place on their 4 wheelers. Many where whipping thru standing water on the surface and venturing out towards the open water...that's nothing to mess around with. 2.) Swamp Fox - 01/28/2014
Where's a polar vortex when you need one?

Headed this way...fast. 4.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
We're supposed to get one of our rare snows tonight. We get ice once or sometimes twice every two or three years.
Glad I didn't listen to the weather services today though. Wouldn't have gotten anything done. One of them had the snow coming in at noon, another at 3PM and a third at 5PM. We still don't have anything at 7. 5.) Hunter - 01/29/2014

They get a lot more of the weird weather than we do 1 or 1.5 hours east. If a wind/tornado or snow/ice storm is coming through, they'll get it much more often than I will. It's like a little force field around here. The weather comes in from the south and west and bends around to the north, missing us more often than not. Except for hurricanes.
On the other hand, I used to ride horses every week out of a stable about 40 minutes north of me. We'd be having a frog strangler down here or it'd have just come through and left the ground a mess, and I'd call up there to see if they were going to let me ride. They never knew what I was talking about, LOL. Dry as a bone up there. 7.) Old Crow - 01/29/2014
For sure when driving on the lakes its key to run in pairs and know your features .... like pressure ridge locations, springs, and open water ...
We lost a few fisherman here last year after getting turned around in a ground blizzard and hitting open water on early ice .... terrible way to go .... I've been turned around in a bad fog but made it off .... thank god for smart phones and GPS .... Spooked me good .... 8.) Swamp Fox - 01/29/2014
You people are nuts...LOL

Those are some nice ones!
Somebody would have to show me how thick the ice is before we leave the shore, LOL...And no making fun of my space heater. :-) 11.) Triton Rich - 01/29/2014
I've driven my truck out on the ice. It was 18" thick, enough to support a tractor trailor but still spooky as hell!

Man, I miss Walleye...and cold water fish in general. Nice haul.

Here's a pic of me and a buddy fishing...he always drives his truck on the ice. If I'm not with him, I leave mine on shore...even if I know its thick (I just don't trust my luck! I dunked a three wheeler through some weak ice over a beaver channel back in the late 80's and I'll never forget how tough it was getting that dam thing out, not to mention the mouth full ice I ate as I was launched onto the facing ice shelf...not my fondest memory.) I never take a vehicle on the ice. Makes me too nervous no matter how many inches of ice. Stay safe everyone.
