1.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
Okay, I've had it with a few sources. I've been using Scoutlook heavily for two or three years and have to say their accuracy SUCKS!!!.
I know this is anecdotal...:wink...but they can't get a wind or rain forecast to suit me to save their hides...One egregious example: A few weeks ago they called for light rain....Point 2 inches possible, if I recall correctly. Two other places forecast moderate to heavy rain, with at least ONE INCH possible...There was never any change to the info on the Scoutlook site, even as frogs were being strangled in gully washes right outside my window. To be fair, every service I looked at said yesterday would be windy (10-15 mph) and they all blew it...Dead calm most of the day. Well after dark, it started howling...Way higher winds than 15 mph. Today was supposed to be the calm day, and I'd say we've had 7-10 mph all morning. I also use Intellicast, Weather.com and maybe one other (only on occasion). Field and Stream or maybe Outdoor Life dotcom have a cloud-type-based weather forecaster, which is neat, but doesn't seem to be bookmarked very easily. And/or I can never get on it/find it when I want to. Any other ideas for reliable and/or detailed weather forecasts that you other weatherhawks use? 2.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
Here's the cloud-cast method, in case you want to play with it...Plug in your own location, of course.
I could not get the conditions for Sugar Tit, SC to come up, so you're stuck with what things are like in Raleighwood until you do... http://www.outdoorlife.com/weather/clouds 3.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/18/2013
I use scout look for 2 things. Stands locations and scent cone. I never worry bout the weather for the most part. Just got cold it's going to be
4.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
Well, since Scent Cone is based on wind direction, and wind direction is much of stand location choice, and since ScoutLook seems to have some difficulty forecasting wind direction accurately in many instances I could cite, you can see the problem I'm trying to get at..:wink
I should have been more clear in my first post, when I mentioned inaccurate wind forecasting. I assumed folks would understand I meant direction, speed, gustiness and all the other common characteristics of wind forecasts. My bad. Scoutlook not only gets velocity wrong; it gets direction wrong just as often. 5.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/18/2013
No. I got what you said. There's only been a couple times where I felt they was really wrong on wind. I still check the wind all the time while in stand to check n see if there in the same direction. There has been a few times where it said wind was coming out of the north and it actually was a sws wind.

:tu:
I'm sure it's worse in some places than in others. And one of the places I use ScoutLook the most may be a weird spot. I just don't know why it would be so different from other places I watch the wind, though. Geography, proximity to water or the coast...It doesn't add up to unpredictable wind to me. I'd like to know what various forecasting models these service use. Also would like to know why they sometimes report current conditions differently from what NOAA is broadcasting at the same moment. 7.) Ventilator - 12/18/2013
its the newfangled electronic stuffs im thinking swampster
however, i use the mossyoak scoutlook app as well. I have noticed it to be off on scentcones occasionally. It is the most accurate app i have found to use tho. I like the aerial photo google earth feature. very convienent in the field on my smartphone. :) 8.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
:-)
It's undoubtedly a cool service, especially when you use it for more than just forecasts. But I've taken to checking it against Intellicast and then sometimes I go to Weather.com as well and kinda "average" the forecasts. I'm not sure if anything drives me nuts more than setting up to have the wind in my face or on my cheek, and then feeling it on the back of my neck, though. :re: Unless it's picking a day to do this or that based on the weather and then having it shown, once again, that this is not an exact science. LOL 9.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/18/2013
You know what drives me nuts. About once a month and if not more the app crashes.
10.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
Have you tried holding the smartphone up to the sky? I bet that would help...
LOL 11.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/18/2013
I have. I've also tried throwing it across the room
12.) Swamp Fox - 12/18/2013
Well, then I'm out of ideas...
13.) Wild Bob - 12/19/2013
I don't know about over your way...but in my neck of the woods, NOAA is about as accurate as you can get. Some times they're off, but not as bad as the the others that I have watched.
May be its because we have a regional NWS office right here...I guess they can't poop in their bed too bad. LOL |
