1.) Wild Bob - 12/06/2013
So me and my wife are talking last night about stocking stuffers for our boys...She is always trying to come up with unique ideas related to the 'other things' that our boys are into, and I'm always covering the 'outdoors/sportsmen' goodies they get. So that got me thinking; how about we start a list here with input from the Hunting Country crew?
What would the ultimate sportsmen's stocking be filled with? (besides money :re: ) A few parameters: 1) Let's keep it reasonable; i.e. I'd love to get a Holland & Holland personal flask ($250.00+) but that isn't going to happen. So how about we keep the price range from $1.00 to $50.00. 2) What ever is on the list must actually fit in a typical stocking (and that can't be the only thing in it!) 3) Keep it clean...if that's possible. 4) Luv2 - we don't need no stinking slide-rules! (Thanks, but no thanks! ) :-) Let's hear some good ideas: 2.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2013
Portable weather radio...No doubt one of the best gifts I ever got from my mom. She was an underwear-and-books mom, so the radio really stood out.
Eton makes some good ones, and they're the ones I use today. Solar- or dynamo-charged with an LED flashlight built in. It won't fit into a stocking, but there's a book edited by T. Edward Nickens who is a fine writer and outdoorsman which is something like "The Ultimate Outdoorsman Tips Book" or something like that. It looked like there might be something in there for everyone, from beginners to more experienced sportsmen to veterans, even. I only got a quick look at it, though. The guy who showed it to me got it at Lowe's Home Improvement (don't know how nationwide they are) but I'll bet you can find it on Amazon. It has Field and Stream branding on the cover. ' Along the same line, do they still make a deck of cards with survival/outdoor tips on them? Those would be cool. A compass... Now, if we're talking about stocking stuffers for us as opposed to the kids, all of the above would work but the list expands SO much... 3.) DParker - 12/06/2013
Butt-Out 2! Duh!
4.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2013
LOL...
I have a vintage Original Butt-Out I'm willing to auction...Only used a couple of times. It would look great in a shadowbox. Good Scouts project, I'd think. Speaking of shadowboxes, if someone's into collecting stuff---fishing lures, for example--a prime addition would be fun to find in a stocking. 5.) bluecat - 12/06/2013

I'm waiting until they get all the bugs out of Butt-Out 2 before I purchase the upgrade - Butt-Out 3. 6.) luv2bowhunt - 12/06/2013
Brush pruners, folding saw would fit the price range. Can't have too many folding saws, I break at least one blade a year, but then I saw more than most guys in the off season. I'm a bowhunting spot making machine between Feb. and April.
A new ligament would be nice too. 7.) NEBigAl - 12/06/2013

Calls, (I like my primos buck roar) Knight and Hale Pack Rack-I think it sounds just like real antlers, except its way easier to carry and you dont smash your fingers as much Hot Hands packets always nice Stools for blinds, I like short no back swivel ones, can be had for less than 25$. 8.) crookedeye - 12/06/2013
the drurys dream season dvd's.. 1, 4 and 5...theres a wealth of information that all young hunters should abide by...that and maybe a flask...
9.) luv2bowhunt - 12/06/2013
Here's what you can learn from the Drury twins. Own private 500 acre farms in Iowa and Illinois. Place posted signs all around the perimeter. Leave 1 field of corn and beans in all season.
Then hunt everyday. 10.) crookedeye - 12/06/2013
what about Obh?? he has all this land, food plots..we seen him riding a tractor around..why doesn't he shoot big bucks year after year???

They wrote him out of the script once he discovered some of their trade secrets. He hasn't been the same since. Nor has he killed any deer. 13.) crookedeye - 12/06/2013

no the drury brothers are on to something..
One of the main reason is cause I pick out 2-3 different bucks for my hit list. If they don't give me a shot than I don't harvest a buck. I try to shoot 4.5 year olds or older bucks. It's east to go out and shoot 2.5 or even 3.5 year old bucks. Can damn near do that every week. My number 1 hit lister got shot oct 16th 3 miles down the road. Had him at 54 yards 2 days before hand with out a good angle. My number 2 I haven't seen since oct 29th. I had a new buck on Tuesday that I would have shot. 85 yards and would be in the upper 170s. It's gun season right now and I had a bow. Wished I had my slug gun that day. Truth be known. I suck as a hunter. :) 18.) crookedeye - 12/07/2013

And that is the biggest difference between public land and private land hunting. Not that one is more holy than the other, just some of us are stuck on public land. Shooting a 3 1/2 yr old on PA public land in archery season, is an accomplishment any of us could be proud of. It ain't easy, even 2 1/2 yr olds can be tough. I'm sure it's similar on public land in just about every other state. Just gets my goat when I see some of these shows and the things they take credit for or the above average skills they imply that they possess. I saw Don Kisky shoot a 160" deer on his Iowa farm on a late season muzzleloader hunt, and the announcer says "the secret to Don's success is his understanding of food sources". Really, the private 500 acre farm with the posted signs, and the uncut soybean field you left standing into the late season had nothing to do with it huh? Just your unbelievable above average understanding of the whitetail deer and his feeding habits. Couldn't have hurt that you watched the deer come out into that field every evening for the last 2 weeks. You get to hunt in a whitetail hunters fantasyland, that's great. You're lucky and I'm happy for you. Just don't try to piss down my back and tell me it's raining. 23.) NEBigAl - 12/09/2013

If you compare your success to theirs you will always come out thinking you are a crappy hunter and aren't as educated as the elite few. I feel lucky when I get a deer in range that I can shoot and get the job done. Some of those shows see more deer in one day than I will see all season. 25.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/09/2013
Not to continue hijacking WB thread.
Just cause some have private land doesn't mean your guarantee a big buck or a deer for that matter. You still gotta hunt. There's been a few days this year where I didn't see a deer at all. Let alone be able to shoot one. Another thing. It takes more than 360 acre to manage deer. You can do your part in your land but you have to get the neighbors involved in it as well. Which is not always going to happen. I don't hold everyone to what I think should be taken out. Some of the deer I pass would make great trophy a for 98% of hunters. I've been known to makei mistakes shooting the wrong deer. But I try to make sure I know if it's mature or not before I let it fly. I'm a firm be leaver that you have to take a certain number of does a year to keep the ratio in check. And to try to control in-bread. I would love to pick luv-9 brain. I bet honestly I could learn a few things from his big noggin 26.) luv2bowhunt - 12/09/2013
Hijack continuation...........
.....you had a few days you didn't see deer. That is to be expected anywhere. Have you ever or could you ever, go an entire season without seeing a deer? On public land here it is possible. Actually the last 2 seasons, I have not seen a deer from the treestand in October. This year I never saw a deer from the treestand the entire season. Years like this make you doubt you know anything about deer hunting. The big difference I see between us is, you're talking about shooting a 140" and up deer, compared to my anything 2 1/2 or older. Just having private land to hunt, let's you raise the bar for expectations, right out of the gate. Again, nothing more holy or pure in a situation like I'm hunting, but it is a totally different experience. The problem I would have is, if someone hunting a private farm in prime country would compare themselves to me this year, and say, "man he sucks." "I've seen 23 buck this year from the stand and he hasn't even seen a deer." Apples to oranges. The guys on TV are not even close to facing the odds someone like me is. It doesn't make me better or smarter or more pious, just facing steeper odds each season. Not arguing, just sayin', facts is facts.:wink And just to stay on topic, how about a stabilizer, would fit nicely in the stocking. 27.) Wild Bob - 12/09/2013

Some of those shows see more deer in one day than I will see all season." - Bluecat I'll jump in here so as to legitimize the hi-jack :-) Seriously, though, I tend to agree with you Bluecat and I can agree with Luv2 as well. After a friend of mine that has a guide service that guides hunters for whitetails on the Milk River related his experience to me, which goes like this: One of his clients a few years ago was an executive of one of the big scent/lure makers. (I won't go into details on the company, as where I'm going with this it is irrelevant.) Anyway this guy has many of his hunts videoed and shown on the company's own videos, as well as a guest on several other big name hunting shows. So as it happened, this guy killed a beautiful whitetail buck one morning. After the shot, when he and his partner filming the hunt got down from the tree stands, they go over to the trail that the big buck came down and carefully videoed the hero laying out a scent trail with their product. When the hunt was aired on the show, they edited the video to show the guy laying out the scent trail PRIOR to the deer coming down that trail and getting killed by the hero! So, my only point in bring this is up is that I honestly feel that entertainment is entertainment, and just that. How many shows would your average TV hunter watch if all they saw was typical bucks and does taken? I can also see Ohio's point of view as I'm certain that there are some celebrity hunters out there that are very knowledgeable and work very diligently at filling their tags every season. Then, just as in all walks of life; there are the other guys that are less than honorable and they will do anything to puff up their ego and/or sell their products. It's the way of world we live in, IMO. Now, how about some more stocking stuffers....:-) 28.) bluecat - 12/09/2013
FYI, I love watching YouTube videos of regular guys/gals shooting regular deer (garden variety) with bows -raw and unrehearsed (for the most part) .
I think we are all in agreement so I won't belabor the point and actually make a contribution to Wild Bob's thread. A great stocking stuffer would be something I recently purchased which is bow string wax named scorpion venom on String Twister's recommendation. I believe it was 11.00 for a little canister. 29.) I know how ya feel Gerry. Hunting plublic land is tuff. That's one of the reason I spend allot of money every year to make the most out of our private farm. I know Kenny can contest to just cause you hunting a private farm in Ohio that has lots of deer doesn't mean your going to see some. I know this don't compare to not seeing anything from a stand as you did the past 2 years but I went from oct 15th- nov 7th and not seen a buck over 1.5 years old. I be leave Kenny hunted 3 days non stop and didn't see a tail. The farm he hunted is loaded with deer.
As for Mr Tinks Terry Rhom. Not the first time I've heard that. Actually I've heard and seen allot of others big names hunters do stuff like that. 31.) Ventilator - 12/09/2013
Yep, i stand by the statement that OHBH has killed the last two remaining deer in S. Ohio. That said, I dont fn give up! I will be back the day after Christmas to keep that stand seat warm for 3 1/2 more days!
I have actually seen more deer per trip on Kentucky public land than i have on the two hunts in S Ohio ive done over the years. But, i know the deer are there and I really like to hang out with Dan-O! (also Dave, Barry,& Chris as well) Ohioans aint bad. :tu: 32.) luv2bowhunt - 12/09/2013
