1.) DParker - 11/29/2013
And...the wait begins. The Dr says the smart money is on some time after midnight or so. So...someone entertain me.
2.) DParker - 11/29/2013
Geez. What kind of idiot can't spell "grandpa"?
3.) Ohbuckhunter - 11/29/2013
I can barely spell my own name so I forgive you. Congrats sir.
4.) DParker - 11/29/2013
Thanks.

Contractions (my daughter's, not mine) are 2 minutes apart, so maybe before midnight.
5.) Swamp Fox - 11/30/2013
:wink

6.) billy b - 11/30/2013
Grandkids are the main joy of my life, congrats DP:grin:
7.) XJCraver - 11/30/2013
Congrats DP. Keep us updated. :tu:
8.) DParker - 11/30/2013
Thanks all. Now it's starting to look like the original post-midnight estimate was a good one. But, who knows.

And yeah, I've already let them both know that I will consider it my sacred duty to teach her all the stuff that will make them cuss me for years to come.
9.) DParker - 11/30/2013
She shoots, she scores! As of 9:51pm Central I have a perfect little granddaughter. At least, that's what we've been told. We still waiting to be let in the room so we can see for ourselves.
10.) billy b - 11/30/2013
Congrats, all granddaughters are perfect:clap:
11.) DParker - 11/30/2013
Finally, verification.

12.) Triton Rich - 11/30/2013
Well congratulations Gramdpa! She's beautiful. Congrats to your Daughter too. Now hurry up and start spoiling your Granddaughter! :-)
13.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2013
What a blessing, congratulations!
14.) XJCraver - 11/30/2013
Perfect!

I assume all is well with the little one and her Mommy? I always worry about that - neither of my girls wanted to be born (labor was a nightmare, both times), so I like to hear about these things going smoothly! :tu:

Name, weight, etc. Now I'm just being nosy....

Save for the fact that she was induced a week early due to pre-eclampsia everything went well, thankfully. Of course, that's easy to say when you're not the one having contractions for hours on end. A funny moment - to the rest of us - came when the nurse finally told my daughter she could have an epidural whenever she wanted it. She wanted it right then and there, of course...at which point my otherwise very supportive son-in-law made the rookie mistake of asking her, "Really? So soon?"

That one's going to come back to haunt him some day. :re:

Dad is a nervous wreck, but Mom and baby are both in good shape. Apart from the general agony that is childbearing my daughter was spared any real complications, save for a little nausea afterward.
Name, weight, etc. Now I'm just being nosy....
No problem. The proud new grandparent is always happy to have an excuse to share info.

Name: Cadence Sophia
Weight: 6 lbs. 5 oz.
Length: 19"
Apgar score: 10 (perfect score, which I think means she gets admission to the college of her choice and preferred rates on credit cards....or something).
16.) DParker - 12/01/2013
I figure the same photo evidence rules apply here as in the contest thread, so...

17.) Forkie McRut - 12/01/2013
Congratulations DP on the wonderful addition to your family and good for 100pts in the Hunting Country Baby Contest.
Glad momma and baby are doing well
18.) Ohbuckhunter - 12/02/2013
Congrats Dan. That daughter must take after the wife huh.
19.) bluecat - 12/02/2013
Were you asked to go fetch some hot water at any time during the process? Did at any time did you rip up some old sheets and soak them in water that has been boiled over a black cauldron?

No, well what the heck were you doing there anyway?

Congrats gramps. She's a beaut.
20.) luv2bowhunt - 12/02/2013
Congrats and welcome to the grandparent club. They are wwaaaaayyyyyy better than kids let me tell ya.:wink

Mine treat me like I'm some kind of wise, old candy giver, who also hands out dollar bills. I keep them hepped up on sugar, then send them home.

An oldie but a goodie. Keep us posted over the next couple years, you'll probably develop your own strategies.

That's good, because at this rate I'm never going to get to hunt again.
Congrats Dan. That daughter must take after the wife huh.
Well, yeah...she takes after her mother (my daughter), who also happens to be a wife.

Mostly occupying space in the waiting room, getting ripped off by the vending machines and trying to find something to watch on the hospital's basic cable subscription (I forgot to bring the charger for my phone :bang: ). That is, when I wasn't at their apartment assembling cribs and whatnot, and wondering why I have all these nuts and bolts left over.

There were no gun shows this weekend, no hunts scheduled, and no bars open? :wink

He don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies...

OK, Miss Scarlett.

25.) Swamp Fox - 12/03/2013
Question for the audience...I was gonna say "crowd"...:

Has any husband you know NOT been in the delivery room (by design), and how long after that was he able to keep hunting and fishing? I bet somewhere between my generation and BillyB's (:wink) it became a cardinal sin to be somewhere else less cringe-inducing.

Just trying to figure out when the rules changed, and if anyone has dared to challenge them lately and lived to tell about it...

Before this thread goes off the rails, let me say "Congrats, Gramps!"
26.) DParker - 12/03/2013
IIRC, the trend toward fathers being present in the delivery room for the actual birth (vs. sitting/pacing elsewhere waiting for a nurse to fetch you once the birth was complete and the newborn had been hosed off and swaddled up all nice and neat) began in earnest sometime around 1970-ish. Naturally, after it became the norm rather than the exception it evolved into something of a general societal assumption...though I've really never heard of anyone catching grief in cases where the couple agreed that Dad would wait outside because he simply didn't have the constitution to witness the event, or whatever other reason(s) he/she might have for it. I wouldn't have missed being present at the birth of my children for anything, and am quite glad that I became a father after this particular little societal custom switched gears.

Now, don't get me wrong...I don't buy into any of the justifications for expecting a father to be in the room at the time. It's very much a personal choice issue. We went to Lamaze classes (or some variation on the theme, I don't recall now) and, in spite of all of the smoke they blow up your pants leg about what an important part of the birthing you (the father) will be, I quickly learned that my presence was far more for my own benefit than anyone else's, including Mom's. My main contribution was avoiding saying something stupid and just generally staying the hell out of the way of the people who were actually bringing some skill and expertise to the whole process. Sure, there's a few helpful things you can do during labor (like massaging the small of her back, feeding her ice chips, etc), as well as the psychological benefit of just generally "being there" for her. But you're the one who gets the most out of it, IMHO. That fact that there's one less thing she can throw in your face years later ('cuz you didn't wuss out and leave her alone to have YOUR child) doesn't hurt either. :wink
27.) Swamp Fox - 12/03/2013
Do you think it's a modern American custom or does every first-world society have the husband in the room?

Sometimes when I have my Russian mail-order bride catalog out in front of me, I wonder how much trouble it's really going to be...
Do you think it's a modern American custom or does every first-world society have the husband in the room?
Good question. I'm having a difficult time locating any good information resources on the custom of fathers in the delivery room in countries other than the U.S., but the following blog post by some well-known French child-birth expert seems to suggest that it's quite prevalent on The Continent as well...and he thinks that's a bad thing, and that birth should be a no-boys-allowed (except for the baby, should it be male) affair. An interesting read:

I don't know....Have you SEEN some of these girls?

LOL
30.) luv2bowhunt - 12/03/2013
I was there, but a couple of times I wished I wasn't.

One time, my wife was having bad contractions while I was paying more attention to the TV than I apparently should have been, and she reached up and sunk her fingernails into my stomach and in the voice of a demon said "go out there and tell them to GET ME SOMETHING!!"

After she retracted her claws from my stomach, I walked out to the nurses station and told them my wife was requesting some medicine or pain relief. The nurse looked at me and said "oh it's too late now, the doctor's ready to go, tell her it's too late now."

That's the pain of childbirth I'll never forget.
I don't know....Have you SEEN some of these girls?

LOL
Yep...and the amount of trouble you can expect from one is proportional to the square of her visual hotness quotient.
32.) bluecat - 12/03/2013
In the commercials they are always mouthing "I love you", making heart shaped signs with their fingers and generally just lying about in skimpy underwear.

Do you think they'll convert to Latvian orthodox?
33.) Swamp Fox - 12/03/2013
I'm pretty sure they'll do anything that makes you happy.

I think it's in the contract.
34.) DParker - 02/06/2014
Is it wrong that when my wife showed me this photo of me playing with my new granddaughter my first thought was, "Wow, my hair is really thinning out"...?

35.) luv2bowhunt - 02/07/2014
Nah.

Luv the proper burp cloth placement, you're a real pro.:tu:
36.) DParker - 02/07/2014
After being repeatedly puked on by two of your own you eventually figure it out...or run out of shirts.
37.) Hunter - 02/07/2014
She's a cutey!!

Looks like you both have about the same amount of hair
38.) DParker - 02/07/2014
Thanks. At some point we're both going to have the same number of teeth as well. I'm just hoping that happens because she caught up with me, and not the other way around. :wink

Oh, and there's that whole diapers thing too.

Wait till she nuzzles in to breast feed. That's a little uncomfortable at first.
41.) Swamp Fox - 02/07/2014
LMAO...
42.) DParker - 02/07/2014
Hey, if she doesn't mind a mouthful of hair I'm not going to complain.
43.) bluecat - 02/07/2014
It's never bothered me.
