I am looking to buy a new rim fire rifle, trying to decide between a 22lr a 22mag or a 17 hmr would like to know everybody's thoughts and pros and cons on them, main use will be squirrel, rabbit and just general plinking, any and all input will be appreciated.
Thanks Mike.. 2.) crookedeye - 10/27/2013
I would choose the hmr..its fast but a little powerful for squirrels and chimpmuncks....
billy Floyd what do you guys think?? 3.) DParker - 10/27/2013
For the uses you list there's no beating 22LR. If you wanted something for slightly bigger game then 22 WMR or .17 HMR would be better candidates, but although usable on rabbits and squirrels they're really overkill for that purpose. And now that the .22LR hoarding stupidity has begun to die down and supplies are headed back towards sanity it shouldn't be too long before you can start getting cheap 500-550 round bricks again for low-cost plinking.
Looking for single-shot, bolt, lever or semiauto? 4.) L&L - 10/28/2013
i agree ce on the overkill bit.... but seeing the price of 22lr is outrageous why not enjoy the fur smoking power!.... the .17 hmr is dead accurate and a good round .... but head shots are a must on squirrels... more like try to hit them in the tip of the nose , otherwise goodbye head and shoulders'''' lol

For the pure fun of it, I would choose the 17HMR. Super fast and accurate and better at long range (not great in the wind though). But in practical terms, the 22 LR is the best choice being cheaper and plenty of gun for the task.

Thanks guys, 22lr is the way I was leaning so I guess I will get that and I think I will pick up a 17HMR after Christmas just for giggles..

Now that, my friend, sounds like a perfectly logical solution! :-) 9.) Ventilator - 10/29/2013
I really like the .17HMR i just got after a one year wait. I was going to say the same thing about ammo in 22LR. Still impossible to get in NC unless you sell a kidney!
