Clancy's in-depth portrayal of U.S. intelligence and military operations lent an unmatched (in my admittedly limited experience) realism to his often epic story-telling. Red Storm Rising was one of my all-time favorite novels, and part of me has always regretted that today's film making CGI technology did not exist prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, so that there would at least have been at least a chance of turning the book into a movie that came close to doing it justice. At least The Hunt for Red October was a fairly well done effort (unlike the thoroughly butchered travesty that was the movie version of The Sum of all Fears). Even the presence of Alec Baldwin couldn't ruin it for me. The combined awesomeness of Sean Connery, Scott Glen, Sam Neill and Fred Thompson was more than enough to cancel him out. :wink 2.) RIP.
His early stuff was much better than his later efforts. |
