I just watched it. Good flick. It's a movie version of the true story of the 1947 Kon-Tiki Expedition in which Norwegian biologist Thor Heyerdal and 5 other crazy Scandinavians build a balsa wood raft and sail it 5,000 miles across the Pacific to support his hypothesis that Polynesia was originally colonized not from the west by Asians, but from the east by ancient Peruvians.
Real ballsy adventurer stuff. I guess when you're born with a name like "Thor Hyerdal" you're pretty much destined for things like that. 2.) DParker - 09/01/2013
Oops. That should be "Heyerdahl".

"I guess when you're born with a name like ______________you're pretty much destined to do things like that..."
---DP There's probably something to that. I'm thinking "Anthony Weiner" , "Sydney Leathers", "President Barack Obama"... I tried to read Kon-Tiki when I was a kid. I ever got very far with it for some reason. It's not like it was written in Austrian... Scandinavia has some Austrian ports, right? Austrian shipping lanes, at least? :wink http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2009/04/06/if-obama-believes-austrian-language-so-will-ap 4.) crookedeye - 09/02/2013

With one left to go...(unnamed)...And he wasn't allowed to visit Hawaii and Alaska, so by my count that means he thought (thinks? :re:  :tap:) we have 60 states.
The original Obama flag controversy (one of three so far, that I know of... :dig:) Obama's explanation: "I understand I said 57 states today. It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh..." I'm afraid we're going to have to give him "numeracy"...

P.S. I was going to say that in the scene where the Kon-Tiki crew are celebrating the discovery that they're on course they were toasting a pod of passing whales with what looked like a bottle of vodka. But a little research showed that according to Heyerdahl's log entry, it was actually Aquavit (I should have known). But then again about the only difference between the two is the addition of herbs, spices and/or fruit oils to the Aquavit. So... 11.) Swamp Fox - 09/02/2013

I've been reading since five years-old, according to my mother, and while I admit that my entire page-turning career was not always on the highest plane (though I am proud to say that it has been a steady progression upward from Dick and Jane ---at least until I found this website---) I believe I have come across the word "numeracy" maybe only twice in written form in all that time. But I'm going to say three times, just to avoid being accused of being unfair to the coolest president ever. The unfortunate thing is---and here you may be able to tell that I am not a math guy, and don't hang out with math guys---I have never heard anyone use the word "numeracy" in a sentence. I mean verbally. As in, "Let me explain why I said I've been to 57 U.S. states, my brothas..." I have to confess that I have never been to a spelling bee either, though, where such a freak occurrence might have been called for. :wink 12.) DParker - 09/02/2013

Well, considering the fact that most of us can't even paddle a rowboat the middle of a pond for a couple hours of bluegill fishing without bringing a chest of beer along I'd say the Scandanavians are nothing special in that regard. 15.) Swamp Fox - 09/02/2013

Those sites will be wondering where the spike in views came from tomorrow morning... Although this doesn't bode well: "This app concentrates on Numaracy in Russian – it is a classic app for the kids based on numbers they will see and use each and every day. This app will help them learn and recognize their numbers and also teach them how to spell and how to improve their speech. " :bang: |
