How versatile are they and which action do ya like, pump, semi auto, single shot?
2.) Pa bowhunter - 07/25/2013
I know a lot of guys who use the .410 for grouse hunting, and I imagine that with a good choke would work out ok for squirrel..
3.) Hunter - 07/25/2013
Good snake gun! I remember that my 1st gun was a .410 single shot. Killed a lot of quail with that gun.
I think I would go for a single shot as they would fairly inexpensive. I don't think you would ever be able to get good resale on something like a Judge if you purchased one of them. 4.) luv2bowhunt - 07/25/2013
I grew up hunting with one, wouldn't use one again if you gave it to me for free.
Seriously, not good for much, way too light for squirrels, not much knock down for grouse. I would only use it for fun or 2 kill chipmunks. 5.) Swamp Fox - 07/25/2013
I've run across a few guys who are quite good with them on doves, even. But these guys are REALLY good wingshots. Very doubtful I'd use one for squirrels, but I'm sure it can be done. :wink .
I think my single-shot 20 will not be replaced w. a .410 as a snake gun but I have used a .410 for that before. Always ran low on ammo before the snakes were dead enough. In a .410 I would choose a pump. 6.) mongoosesnipe - 07/25/2013
decent for small game and such but they are petty small and cost as much or more than 20 or 12 to shoot if you want to get a 410 i would go with one of the hr single shots probably the 45/410 survivor if your looking for a gun for youth i would go with a 20 gauge single shot the are low cose and loads can be had to had from 3/4 oz light recoil loads up to 1.5 oz turkey loads
7.) DParker - 07/25/2013
I don't know anyone who does it, but some of the ballistics testing I've seen suggests that reasonably heavy .410 slugs through a rifled barrel (if you can find one on a gun you like) ought to be a viable combo on whitetails out to 100 yds or so.

I HAVE A THOMPSON CONTENDER IN A 10"BBL IN .410/45LC. I CARRY IT ON MY QUAD EVERYWHERE I GO. I CARRY EITHER #4 SHOT OR 4 PELLET BUCK SHOT. FUN AS HELL GUN AND HAS KILLED 2000 POUNDS OF GROUSE AND A FEW PACKRATS

Excellent:tu:
11.) Floyd - 07/27/2013
Dan, if you was to get another .410, what would you get?
12.) OKY - 07/27/2013
Other than price and availability, a .410 is a pretty neat little gun. Not sure why so many adults start their kids off on them though. It's actually better suited to a skilled shooter, with its small payload.
13.) Floyd - 07/27/2013
My wife wants one. I don't know why. Yes, I asked. I think she wants to do surgical strikes on snakes.
14.) BULLZ-i - 07/27/2013
I ALMOST PICKED UP A HARDER TO FIND REM 870 IN .410 THE OTHER DAY, BUT THE GUY WANTS A BIT MUCH FOR IT. OTHER THAN THAT, MARLIN HAS A NICE LIL MODEL 410 LEVER ACTION THAT LOOKS LIKE A HOOT. AND ALSO I THOUGHT ABOUT GETTING LISA A ROSSI CIRCUIT JUDGE FOR SHIZ AND GIGGLES.
15.) Floyd - 07/27/2013
I've seen the Rossi. I would lean more toward the 870.

Most seem to not understand/be aware of that aspect and focus just on the soft recoil. There's a lot to be said for that though (nothing turns a small shooter off the activity quite like the kick of a load that's too much for them when just starting out), if you start them out shooting stationary targets until they're ready for something with more *oomph*. Then you can sell the lightly used .410 if you want without taking much of a loss. 18.) Ohbuckhunter - 07/27/2013
I would like to have a 410 rem 1100.
19.) mongoosesnipe - 08/02/2013
another option to get a 410 for snakes and such is to put an adapter tube into a larger shotgun http://www.gunadapters.com/12-gauge-to-410-45-colt-shotgun-adapter/ there are several different companies that make them this was the first on that came up in the Google search there are also longer ones designed for use with break action guns

I think that's just about spot-on. The .410 adapter might make sense for use in gradually getting a new young shooter used to shotgun thump. But I can't think of a good reason to use one for turning a 12/20 ga into a 410 "snake gun" when 12/20 ga shells will do the job more effectively and cheaply even. And I can't for the life of me think of a single reason why I'd want to waste .45 Colt rounds by sending their lead tumbling through a 12 or 20 ga barrel. 22.) Deerminator - 08/02/2013
I kinda like marlins lever action. :-)
23.) DParker - 08/02/2013
As always, when you have so many options, the important question is, "What do you want it for?"

LETS NOT FORGET ABOUT THE TAURUS JUDGE. WOULD MAKE A GREAT BEDSIDE WEAPON ESPECIALLY FOR A FEMALE OR LESS EXPERIENCED PERSON.
MY OLD MAN HAS ONE AND WITH FACTORY FIXED DIVOT REAR SIGHTS AND FIBER OPTIC FRONTS, IT WAS EXTREMELY ACCURATE OUT OF THE BOX WITH 45LC AT 60 YARDS ON A BENCH (DIDNT SHOOT PAST THAT, BUT WOULDA DONE IT) AND THE .410 WAS FUN, BUT ACCURACY JUST DEPENDS ON WHAT LOADS YOU USE SINCE THERE IS NO CHOKE SYS. I KILLED A COUPLE GROUSE WITH IT, SO IT WORKS JUST FINE I GUESS. I HAVE ONE OF THE 12G TO .410 AND A 12G TO 20G INSERTS FOR A BREAK ACTION AND TO BE HONEST THEY WERE GIVEN TO ME, BUT I WILL NEVER USE IT. AINT NOTHING EITHER OF THOSE WILL DO THAT A 12G WONT... |
