I thought I'd toss out here the same observation/question that I just recently posted in another forum...

On multiple occasions I've received somewhat startled looks from people - including some adult males - when I pulled my 3.5" folding knife from my pocket (for opening a box or some other mundane cutting chore). I even had a female co-worker ask me, with a confused look on her face, why I would need to carry a knife at all.

Did I miss something? When did carrying a pocket knife stop being standard practice for men? Or teenaged boys, for that matter?

next time you talk to the female ..make sure you pull it out and clean youre finger nails with it and wipe the dirt on youre pant leg..let her no youre the alpha male..

being the good boy scout I am always prepared. I never leave home (unless flying out of town) without a pocket knife of some sort. if we are at a family function it amazing because none of the men carry pocket knives...it must not be PC to do so.

I'm just astounded because, basic cutting implements have been the single most useful, ubiquitous tools that have accompanied humans ever since one first learned to chip bits of a rock away to give it a sharp edge. They're still enormously useful (admittedly less so for urban dwellers, but cases in which they're quite handy still arise on a fairly regular basis), and I can't for the life of me come up with a good argument for not carrying one, so long as it's legal to do so...let alone be surprised when someone [I]is[/I] carrying one.

That is a weird. Everybody I know has one in there pocket or clipped to there pants.

I remember one time Tom was invited to a birthday party and no one had a knife to cut the sheet cake.
Except me. So Sweetie barrowed the stilleto I had at the time and used that. Worked but wasn't to good for serving:-)

That is so true DP.
There might be one in that gigantic Swiss army knife they make.

One of the first gifts I would give any of my friends, male or female was a pocket knife.

Although I'm tired of seeing all the stainless steel blades. Stainless is soft. Nothing like a good carbon steel blade.

I like the ceramic blades. But, i recently broke the tip off one of mine while trying to cut a fieldpoint from a small sapling. lol

Forgot It wasnt a real blade! darnit!

Ceramic blades' scary sharp edge-taking property makes them great for in the kitchen and other places where you're not likely to place a lot of stress on the brittle material or rely on it in a survival situation. I would never carry one in the field.

I have a ceramic blade and ditto what DP said. The points and any where along the blade will chip and break.
Not very use full in my opinion.

If I spent more time playing chef I'd love to have a set of ceramic kitchen knives. But good ones are silly expensive, and I just wouldn't use them often enough to justify the price.

I have started using the Havalon Piranta the last two years for my skinning & caping duties. If you havent seen one, they are pretty sweet!! Change the blade in seconds. They just came out with a much thicker blade this year as well. Ive broke a blade or two skinning, but only takes a few seconds to change out. I bought a hundred blades for 40 bucks. Best little knife ive used.

Nice knife but it's way overpriced for what it is. It was a gift from a good friend who toured the lovely Iraqi countryside on two tours.

In closing, relative to the "looks". You know how men have this female radar embedded in our DNA? Young, old ... it doesn't matter. Sometimes this radar is finely calibrated spotting beauty from tremendous distances and in all manner of weather conditions. Sometimes, this radar is old and needs a firmware and software updates because it sends false signals of beauty. Well, my PC radar which was manually installed as society changed with me changing with it has been de-installed. I like keeping it simple by simply reminding myself I have learned the difference between right and wrong and sensitive and insensitive.

I'm not out to hurt anyone or trample them underfoot unless they're in my stand without permission. :-)

Hey, Bob...I want 2 minutes and 50 seconds of my life back....I'm glad I didn't watch for the whole 10:17 but I figured I wasn't going to learn anything about the knife if I stuck around anyway, LOL...






I fluctuate between "Won't ever need a knife today'' to "Wish I had one with me" to "There's one in the truck so everything's cool" to "Of course I have a knife on me" to "What are you lookin' at? Never seen a six-inch blade before?"

My Gerber LMFs (old version or new version) or a neck knife will turn a head every once in a while, but that's okay. If we get in a jam, the shocked and awed will figure it out. Most every other knife I ever carry goes without comment, as it should be.

When stuck deep in civilization, though, I don't carry (on my person) anything beyond a 2- or 2.5-inch folder or a tiny little Cobalt box-cutter, if I carry anything at all.

I do take some solace from the fact that during hunting season, when we hit the corner 7-11 for coffee in our head-to-toe full-bubba camo with our 5-5½" hunting blades on our belts no one gives us the stink eye. Hell, we're even at home on the occasion that we're getting a late start and we go with the Starbucks across the street instead.

But then again my area of town is a little more towards the semi-rural part of the spectrum when it comes to suburbs.

And that OTF knife, while nice, would buy me trouble given the current state of TX law. That's about to change though, I think.

Some people give a ... how things work, some don't. I was gonna take video of my own, narrate it, process it, edit it, upload it to YouTube and embed that link but I ran out of time.

The only thing I fluctuate on is which carry-conceal method works best with my attire.
