When I was a kid, we used to set off those lighted air balloons over the water using plastic dry-cleaning bags, straws for the frame, and a bunch of birthday candles or candle stubs glommed together.

I guess they have a store-bought version these days... I found one caught in the jessamine vines on my front porch last year.

I like the hot air ufo balloons. My buddies and I made a bunch of them while we were in High school. There were ufo reports called in and everything.
The dripping melted plastic from the dry cleaner bags was really cool to watch. Some wen't over Onondaga lake while others drifted around the area.
It was kind of a big deal with a wright up in Sunday's paper about the balloons. None of us were caught, no names no admissions. And no cops cause they were looking for us:-)
