A couple of times in the past, after priming a rifle case I've detected a flaw in it that had previously escaped my notice...a flaw significant enough to make me want to discard the case rather than reload it. No big deal. Just chamber the empty brass into a rifle, aim at the ground and detonate the primer so the brass can be tossed safely. It makes a sound roughly equivalent to a firecracker.
Reloading some 9mm tonight I had the same thing happen for the first time with pistol brass. OK, so I grab my son's PPQ, clear it, drop the case into the chamber, aim at the garage floor and pull the trigger. Well...as it turns out, the much shorter barrel of a pistol makes for a much louder report from the detonating primer...which bounces off the concrete floor and the metal garage door, and right into your ear canals, which then proceed to treat you to a lovely ringing sensation for the next 10 minutes or so. So the moral of this story is: Always wear hearing protection when you're detonating a primer. 2.) Hunter - 06/09/2013
