Loosely from memory:
There is a commercial out right now and I believe it is for an erectile dysfunction pill. It shows an older man who is giving the illusion that he is very resourceful and self sufficient. He is trying to make a fire on the beach and doesn't have any matches. He goes over to a toolbox and grabs the old Buck Folding Hunter. You know the one, with the brass bolsters. He then strikes the bolster (I had to look away as he did this, what a way to treat a knife) against a piece of flint (supposedly). The next thing you see is the fire so you assumed he created a spark and ignited his fire. The problem is that brass is not steel and I don't believe it would create a spark. Here is a good description of how steel (when liberated) creates a spark. http://survivaltopics.com/article/flint-and-steel-what-causes-the-sparks/ Anyone see this? 2.) Those commercials have ruined Howlin' Wolf for me.

I've never understood the two-bathtub thing either so what do I know.

I'm not sure I saw that commercial or not. Maybe the end of it. Is there a (supposed) woman in the tent at the end of it? If so, I missed the knife action.
Brass won't spark, so it's used on a bunch of different tools, fixtures and components. It is hard and sturdy, which is why it is used in marine applications so much, for example, but it is not as hard as steel. Unless I got bad information forty years ago, the back of the knife blade is what you use against the flint. Maybe I haven't had the right knives, though, because I've tried several times to get a spark with a knife blade and have always come up snake-eyes. :bang: My guess is it would be politically incorrect to show a knife blade in a commercial, much less in an erectile dysfunction commercial, LOL. Buncha pansies...But some women's group would go apespit. Thus, the bolsters. :re: Now, as to the bathtubs, I believe it is part of a slow strategy which will be revealed over the next few years. Now that they've got everybody wondering about what the tubs are all about, they'll start showing the man and the woman in a tub to together. By that time, it won't scare the kiddies. Then, in a few more years, it will be two guys in the tub, and later, three guys. That's when they roll out their new jingle (bye-bye Howlin Wolf): "Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Three Men in a Tub." I have it on good information that they're working on the revised lyrics right now. 5.) DParker - 06/05/2013

However, here's the ad...and he actually does appear to be using the back of the blade to strike the rock (not a flint, I don't think). He just leaves it folded:
My guess is it would be politically incorrect to show a knife blade in a commercial, much less in an erectile dysfunction commercial, LOL. The silly part of this is that he has to walk back to his truck to retrieve his pocket knife from the tool box....because it isn't in his pocket....even though it's, y'know....a pocket knife. 6.) bluecat - 06/05/2013
Thanks for posting that DP. I've watched it over and over now and it looks like he is hitting the side of the bolster against the rock. At any rate it is Hollywood so just put something out there and people will believe it.

Here's the best I can do to catch the actual strike.
The important thing to note for all you campers out there is once a spark is formed, the fire starts instantly. 8.) bluecat - 06/05/2013
He had plenty of other high carbon options to strike against the "flint-like" substance but chose to gouge a perfectly nice knife.

The actual strike. He had the knife in his toolbox so he could open paint cans.

You never know when you're going to need to suddenly pull over and redecorate a house.
The important thing to note for all you campers out there is once a spark is formed, the fire starts instantly.
Air time is expensive, and there's no place in the advertising budget for all this....
