Doesn't the phrase "zero tolerance" just take away the obligation for those in charge to make a fair decision based on the facts of each individual situation? Seems to me to be a lazy cop out!
4.) DParker - 04/28/2013
That's exactly it. The entire goal of "zero tolerance" is "zero human judgment", meaning the complete avoidance of anyone needing to take responsibility for making an intelligent decision.

Last night I watched a show about a man who was dropped off on a remote tropical island with nothing and attempting to survive for 60 days. It was a good show and I enjoyed watching him battle to sustain himself. On the show he mentioned how he'd give anything for a Swiss Army Knife.
It is funny how we can take an inanimate object and deify it or villify it. Did anyone mention how the cops killing the older brother and severely wounding the other brother (with their big black guns and high capacity magazines) saved multiple lives in the Boston tragedy? 6.) bluecat - 04/30/2013
I have several friends I work out with at lunch. We do a P90-X style of workout that is super high intensity. Matt is a physical speciman and we all struggle to keep up with him. He recently went in to get term insurance as his wife just had a baby. His BMI (body mass index) is around 32 which is considered obese. Now understand that Matt doesn't have an ounce of fat on him and is around 6' 2" and 240 pounds. BMI measurements are wildly inacurate for athletes.
Because of his BMI, he can't get the preferred rate. That is an example of a regulation that avoids any human judgement and responsibility for making an intelligent decision. If they measured body fat, then Matt would be fine but it is so much simpler to take a height and weight and make assumptions. 7.) DParker - 04/30/2013
Here's a good P90 workout...though it doesn't seem to be helping Larry's mid-section any.

Boykin said the provisions require Winthrow – an honors student and Eagle Scout – to attend an alternative school. The family, she said, isn't satisfied, because he will not be allowed to graduate with his class. The news of Winthrow's arrest prompted an outcry from the local community that his punishment is too harsh, especially after charges weren't filed when a loaded gun was found in an assistant principal's car two years ago. The assistant principal and a school resource officer were each suspended for three days without pay in that case..." There was some stupidity in a school down Charlotte-way earlier this year or late last year, too...Something about food...A mom provided a lunch for her little crumb-cruncher that the school said didn't meet code...They forced the kid to buy cafeteria food from the lunch lady...And not the good kind, either, if memory serves... :wink Then there is the NY public school that has gone all-vegetarian...That story is out in just the last couple of days...Sounds like a fun place to learn... 23.) That public school in NYC---sounds like a magnet school, but what do I know---seems to be very proud of their vegetarian chili. I'm sure the recipe would be interesting to discuss...LOL
On another note, can you imagine if someone approached you with this idea for educating your kids?--- "The founding of our school was based on health and nutrition and teaching kids how to make healthy choices in the belief that they would be more successful academically and in their life,” Groff said. “But then we started to watch the kids. One, what they would bring in to school, and two, what they would gravitate towards in the cafeteria." Now I've heard everything... Don't tell me the little rugrats chose hummus kaysidillos on their own... That quote above is from some goofy NYC blog ...I'll source it if I have to but it's not too interesting unless you're from lala land...It quotes a big cheese at the school, 27.) DParker - 05/02/2013
