It occurs to me that mounting a trail cam overlooking the tree-lined creek at the end of my new property would be a good way to keep track of what predators, if any, come prowling around it, especially at night. A solar+battery powered unit seems like the way to go, and since we're looking to change our cellular plan to one that will give us 4 lines for the same price as 3 I could use the 4th one for a cellular cam.

So, who here has experience with any of the trail cams that fit the above bill? I have exactly zero experience with any trail cam of any kind, so any feedback would be useful.

i haven't decided yet if cellular cameras are a ChiCom plot to gather intelligence and further weaken the leg muscles of Americans in advance of an invasion of a billion screamin' surplus schoolboys resulting from their old one-child policy, or not.

I would also question the "solar power" since this is usually untested on tree-lined creeks and I know nothing solar-powered and motion-activated works consistently around here unless I am careful where I place it for all seasons of the year, and remind the cats to make big wide circles around as they go about their day, back and forth, back and forth ...

Luckily, for this application I don't actually need to place the camera in/under any of the trees. All I need to do is place it and it's solar panel in a place that overlooks where the trees cross the property (which they do on a diagonal), and there are plenty of places out in the open along the fence line on the right or the divider fence/gate for that. And even if I did mount it on one of the trees it looks like there's still enough sunlight to keep a battery pack charged.

And maybe a coyote eating a raccoon eventually ...


I think you'd need to bait a shallow covered hole or hang a goat or a wildebeast up in that middle tree to catch a mountain lion, though ... Maybe ask the neighbors if they have any they need to get rid of ...

Now that you mention it, being the only house in the area with a wildebeest on pasture would be pretty cool.

I'd never stake out a goat though. I saw this documentary once where someone did that and it attracted a lawyer-eating T. Rex...not that there's anything wrong with that.
