1.) Swamp Fox - 05/05/2021
I went looking for some news and info on my home lake the other day and noticed there were a lot more videos than there used to be.

Used to be there was practically nothing but now I had a bunch to choose from, and they were universally horrible.

Let me count the ways ... at some point in the future.

I never learned a damn thing ---nor felt like I ever would ---in an hour of sampling the first five or ten minutes of several.

Plus, none of the youtubers were local and they all seemed like they could go back home and no one here would miss them.

...And maybe some folks at home would be unhappy to see them return ...

A couple of them I felt like punching in the nose right off.

I'm going to try to determine if this was a temporary glitch because we had a minor-league "national" tournament out of the ordinary, or if I can expect more of this in the future.

:omg:

Unfortunately, finding the answer is going to require watching more of these videos.

Talk about getting to the bottom of things ... This may become another one of my unfinished projects ...

:dig:

I wonder if Crookedeye and BillyB have to put up with this nonsense where they fish ...

Eight hours ago ...

Was that too harsh?
3.) bluecat - 05/06/2021
Not sure what the rant was about...lol
4.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
LOL ...

Maybe I'll clarify tomorrow with circles and arrows ... :wink

If you like loud dramatic music, for-camera violent hook sets, or no fish coming aboard and a lot of B-roll at the gas pump and the ramp, I highly recommend the videos I watched ...

And none of that addresses the "personalities" ... LOL

While there are some notable exceptions, with instructional YouTubers I've found the rule is that they love the sounds of their own voices, and tend to prattle on about nothing of any interest before getting to conveying any useful information...assuming they ever do at all.
6.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
I got the impression from most that there was never going to be any good stuff at all, no matter how long I watched.

I get that they're producing a "show," but who cares when it's not even entertaining...

I didn't detect any storytelling, and I didn't sniff any forthcoming knowledge... But I did see a lot of posing for the camera.

So I'd have to say it was even worse than the average hunting youtube .... LOL

Let me show you the videos where they don't even talk ... It's just heavily edited clips of a guy running two or three banks with a crankbait all morning and yanking bass over the gunnel over and over ...

Of course, there's some canned synthetic music overlaid, so he's got that going for him, which is nice ...
8.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
At least in hunting videos we don't have to listen to EDM ... yet.

:wink

There's at least one channel where no talking (or music) actually works really well. It's called Primitive Skills, and it's just videos of some guy (there are several different ones, usually a villager or just some back-to-nature type) fashioning something practical and useful using nothing but primitive tools and raw materials gathered from the jungle, woods, stream bed, etc. What makes it fun to watch is the fact that nobody's talking and telling you what he's doing, so you have to try to figure what he's doing, why he's doing it and where he's going with the project before it all becomes apparent. It can really be spellbinding at times. I just got done watching one where a guy builds a furnace out of mud and uses it to smelt iron from some rocks he crushed up by hand.

The best thing to do, if you can, is to pick one and start it without reading the title so you have go in with no clue at all about what he's making.
12.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
Excellent tip.

I will be especially on the lookout for any episodes on alchemy ...

:grin::wink:grin:
13.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
There ARE episodes on alchemy, right?

It's probably the most primitive skill I'm most interested in right now ...

:-)
14.) DParker - 05/06/2021
Well...I view fermentation and cheesemaking as alchemy, so there's a chance.
15.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
I can't say that I have an argument against that ...

... Although elixirs for immortality and the power to turn iron into gold would probably be more up my alley ...

... Although to be honest, I do have to mention that elixirs for immortality and the power to turn iron into gold would be more up my alley ...
19.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
Also, I'm afraid that with all this talk of alchemy, the fact will be lost that there really *are* a lot of fishing videos set to EDM ...

But I suppose my potential immortality and unimaginable wealth could make up for that ...

Barely ...
20.) bluecat - 05/06/2021
Okay, so apparently there is a whole world out there filming and watching other people fish. I'll put in my two cents and then exit the way I came in. I don't watch them and nothing is more frustrating than watching a hunting show where I can't hear the sounds of nature because of some stupid music playing in the background. It's as if the makers of these films think that the sound of the wind or leaves crunching is so objectionable.

I'll let myself out.
21.) DParker - 05/06/2021
some stupid music playing in the background.
Not only that, but it's always some shitty hair metal that wasn't even good enough for MTV in the '80s.
22.) DParker - 05/06/2021
Here, this should calm your nerves. I get all proud of myself just for putting together something from Ikea, then I watch one of these to put me back in my humble place.

23.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
I'll watch more of that later when I have more time ...

Good stuff...

I assume the video is only 15 minutes long because the guy had to stop playing around and go to work ...

:wink
24.) bluecat - 05/06/2021
IKEA is way harder.

I don't mind all music in outdoor videos. I've seen some stuff that was well done.

But the high need of many to make everything dramatic or plug into an extreme sports soundtrack really is annoying.

I did find one high-end pro bass fishing video last night that I liked, but only after trying it three times. Early on in Attempts One and Two, I thought I was gonna hate it.

Not earth-shattering or game changing, but the money they spent on production was rewarded. Pretty lightweight in terms of information offered, but a fairly interesting story about a few days of competition. Music and drama were understated, the personalities were tolerable and actually more likeable the more you watched.

Overall, I'd rate it a 7. It had a good look, and you couldn't dance to it. :tu:

I'll post it if anyone's interested.

That's pretty spot-on. The only thing I'd take issue with is his dissing of Swedish Meatballs.
28.) Swamp Fox - 05/06/2021
I think "Ikea Guy" probably thinks Swedish Meatballs are generally OK, even at a box store, but *ANGRY* Ikea Guy is more discriminating .... and I mean in the good way .... :re:

Not a lot of good bait shops, for one thing ...
