I have several deer feeders in my yard. They're just pvc pipes with elbows that hang from a tree. The problem is squirrels jump up and sit on the elbow and eat the corn. Is there some sort of on-demand system that could remove the squirrels from the equation?
I don't want a big commercial feeder that is on a timer. What I have now is not noticeable and requires no energy. Any thoughts? The only thing I can think of is removing the elbow so it is a straight pipe, then having some sort of grating on the bottom of the pipe and a rope that dangles. When bumped it jostles the corn so it drops through the grating. I just think squirrels are going to figure that out. btw, I've already thought of the .22 solution. 2.) bluecat - 02/24/2021
Found this online. Looks similar to what I have except my tube hangs straight down from a limb. 3.) bluecat - 02/24/2021
I've thought about this but deer never seem to have the right change. 4.) Swamp Fox - 02/25/2021

There used to be a set-up with a five-gallon bucket and a rod or dowel that ran through the bottom that if jostled would release some corn. I'm sure there were homemade as well as commercial versions.
If you ran that dangling from a beam or limb with a conical squirrel guard above the bucket, I think that would be about the best you could do. But again .... Why are you so mean to squirrels? 7.) bluecat - 02/25/2021

Okay, okay, +3 8.) bluecat - 02/25/2021
I don't have anything against squirrels and they bathe in my bird bath without incident but the time and expense of feeding corn should go to the deer.
Note, I don't mow over the hedge balls and stack them into nice piles so they have winter food. So you see, I'm not all bad. 9.) DParker - 02/25/2021
Personally, I'd let the squirrels have their fill and fatten them up. They taste better.
That's probably not the help you were looking for.
I've thought about this but deer never seem to have the right change.
Someone always has to go back and get a shitload of dimes. 10.) bluecat - 02/25/2021

Model cars, model airplanes?
I enjoyed making a model tank with my dad when I was young. He didn't appreciate that I put it through a real war scenario after we finished. One strategically placed Black Cat in the cockpit was all she wrote. 13.) Swamp Fox - 02/26/2021

The M-80 had a center fuse, was usually colored red, and had an original military use. There evolved "civilian versions" of the M-80. An ash can had a fuse at the end of the cylinder and was always silver or gray-colored, in my experience. It's often called "the civilian version" of the military M-80. I don't recall any difference in how much we feared one or the other, LOL. ["> 23.) Swamp Fox - 02/26/2021
