What better way to put Covid 19 temporarily in the rear view mirror after 3 months of no hunting than to get out in it on opening day of turkey in VA.

31 degrees, 3-5 mph breeze and oh so quiet.

Not a ton of gobbling but just enough to confirm the classic roosting spots noted during deer season and to get into position.

A couple of restful hours go by. I reasoned they must have flown down off the roost and went silent. Nada. Nothing worked.

There's many things that I like about turkey hunting. There's no need for scent control or strict time mgmt and at times moving around is way better than sitting tight.

I had an instinct they flew down into a field half a mile from my position so I moved. Slowly walked and glassed along a fence line separating the neighbors field from hardwoods on my side of the fence.

Walk two steps, glass, walk two more steps. I hit the slate call with a couple yelps and waited. No reply. Pretended I was a tree and stood motionless.

When I lowered the binos to my chest out of my peripheral vision I saw movement in the field. 4 hens walking the fence line about 23 yards away and walking towards me feasting on insects as they strolled.

I knelt down, tugged my non-Covid19 leafy face mask into position, clipped on the release and used a large oak to obscure my body.

Yep. Here come two Toms all blustery and puffed out putting on a show for hens who paid no mind. Beautiful birds. I would say based on beards and body size they were somewhere between Jakes and Tom's. Not super impressive but not young punk Jakes.

Sun was at a shallow angle and lit up their iridescent feathers. I live life for these moments! I'm truly alive in the moment. The stress of the world is nowhere near me or on me. It's me, the bow and birds

Came to full draw and laser focused on the hole among the thickening underbrush and wire fence squares.

Totally dead to rights!

It was at that moment when I realized whoopsie these were animals on someone else's property. I would be less than truthful if I didn't admit the classic debate in my head went back and forth several times.

I know my neighbor doesn't turkey hunt and I could easily hop the fence, retrieve the bird and be out of there in minutes.

But was it worth it even if the birds had been bigger, fatter and long beards?

Nope. It never has been "worth it" so I drew down.

The boys must have spotted the movement without realizing exactly what "it" was. They both turn stared at me for what seems like 5 to 10 minutes. They they pulled that classic turkey move which to me is hilarious. "Hmmm ... something isnt quite right but I'm gonna act like Im not concerned even though I am so I'm gonna get the hell outta here but casually." In choreograped unison they promptly pivoted and at a moderate pace sauntered away at an angle.

Many say hunting is more than killing. I have understood this credo for decades and lived it for no one to witness. Yesterday was our turkey season opener here in the Virginia hardwoods of the Blue Ridge mountains. I've confirmed where they live and plan on paying another visit or two or three ....

I hope to have pictures soon.

Good luck to you, Bob!
Great story Bob and congrats for your patience, your time is coming!!
You know what Billy? I don't care if I ever connect anymore. I mean I do and I don't. There's no stress anymore if I don't.

I'm being honest when I say I'm truly grateful to God I can even get out there and I know of all people you understand what I'm saying. Since I don't believe in luck but do believe in divine providence those turkeys that day and I were absolutely meant to rendevous. It was that test of patience and ethics that I hope I passed. :wink

nothing beats being in a blind during the spring. unfortunately the camp grounds got closed down a couple days we were suppose to go..hopefully they will open may 8
7.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
i think it was the spring of 2015, i was hunting during a thunderstorm..you could see it was getting darker and darker as the storm was moving in closer, every time there would be a lightining strike followed by thunder, the turkeys would gobble. shot a jake that evening.. that was a good time
8.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
if i had a nickle for every time i sat in my blind during a storm, i would be 15 cents richer..
9.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
i come up with a recipe for ground deer..i head of cabbage two cans of tomatoe soup...rice.. lb of deermeat.. i call it poor mans cabbage rolls
10.) Swamp Fox - 04/14/2020
I'm not an electrician, but in springtime I always think about how they'll find me ---holding my shotgun in my lap under a big oak, or caged in the charred skeleton of my graphite and aluminum ground blind, still seated on my semi-comfy chair -- after the lightning strike.
11.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
fun.. isnt it
12.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
im not a meterologist
13.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
theres nothing better than a close lightning strike followed by a loud thunder as im sitting in my blind
14.) crookedeye - 04/14/2020
i live for those days
15.) Swamp Fox - 04/14/2020

LOL ... He avoided some major dental surgery, huh?

I don't like to hunt in the rain either, especially with a bow. Besides the miserableness and the bloodtrail problem, I loathe the gear clean-up when I get home and have other things to do. Yeah, Hoppes No. 9 is an aphrodisiac, but I'm not in the mood if my mind is already turning back to what everyone calls the real world.

I figure I got soaked and chilled enough when I was younger that I'm not going out in the slop if it feels like a chore.

If there's something I'm excited about, though, all bets are off. Big deer, hungry fish, hot gobblers, special trip, buddies, guiding someone else (the right kind of person), new territory, or just somewhere I love that I haven't been in a long time ... Those are some reasons to get out of bed or the tent in the dark and go marching through the damp, or even the slosh, especially if you feel things are about to break your way.

Throw in a wood fire after the hunt, a pretty girl cooking supper and serving drinks, and nowhere to be the next day, and my aversion to chores changes just a teeny bit, too. Under those circumstances, I will happily mend harness and sleep well and care-free that night.

Then when the weather clears to vivid blue skies and cool breezes, as we all prefer, life will be just that much more glorious when we step outside once more.
32.) billy b - 04/14/2020
I agree Bob, I only hunted a few times this year and did not get a deer, it was the first time in the last 42 years that I did not get one, it kinda bothered me for a couple of days but not anymore, I have been lucky to be able to hunt for all these years and I thank the Lord for the all fun I had.

Congrats guys, you ruined an actual hunting post yet again.

Jon, we could have used some more input from "members" but there wasn't any.

So we carried on.

In life --as opposed to social media-- I always try to err on the side of conversation, engagement and enjoyment as opposed to blurting stuff out and cheering if it just sits there.

Nobody's cheering anything. Quite the contrary.

Its downright depressing what was and now is.
62.) Swamp Fox - 04/27/2020
"Cheering" might have been the wrong word.

But as shorthand, I think it works.

2 replies > 7 pages jabber = cheering for 2 replies

x replies > 7 pages jabber = cheering for x replies

0 replies > 7 pages jabber = cheering for 0 replies

I happen to think most threads around here get the on-topic attention they merit and/or can attract from a very small audience, and any conversation after that is a bonus, not a bug.

When /if we had/have a bigger audience, the same concept held/would hold.
When /if we had/have a bigger audience, the same concept held/would hold.
Three words that rule the online community ... CONTENT IS KING.

It doesn't matter if a website promotes horseback riding, hunting or collecting tea cups ... if the content is meaningful, people will return and the site will grow just as ArcheryWorld.com did for years.

If the content is meaningless, as has become the obvious case with HC, then there will never be a "bigger audience".

Visitors, including some of my long time hunting industry friends/connections correctly characterize HC as a closed community that is not welcoming to outsiders or appreciative of quality content. Odd that we have a problem we're totally capable of fixing if we wanted to but yet every attempt at reasonably good content ends up hijacked into nothingness.
64.) Swamp Fox - 04/29/2020
I've heard that before.

I'd like to know the quality "outsiders" and quality content that got rejected.

Then we could figure out if we're missing out on real "quality" or just not providing a safe space for marketing types to hawk their products or puff themselves up.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that ...)

*****

I take it that you feel that once a thread has gotten its one or two on-topic replies (under current conditions) all further engagement should cease?
65.) Bob Peck - 04/29/2020
I've heard that before. I'd like to know the quality "outsiders" and quality content that got rejected.
I don't have any idea what you're talking about here. I didn't say anything about quality "outsiders" or quality content being rejected.

The industry "insiders" who have commented to me over the years and who have characterized HC as the "frat house" (their words) are senior level execs who work at Mossy Oak, Bass Pro, Winchester, Mossberg, Hoyt and the Outdoor Sportsman Group (A subsidiary of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which is an outdoors media group that publishes 19 hunting, fishing and shooting magazines, and own the Sportsman, Outdoor Channel, and World Fishing Network specialty channels, as well as the MyOutdoorTV.com internet TV network.)

Are these people any more important or knowledgeable than anyone on this site? Nope. Like me, they've spent the better part of their lives in the hunting industry consuming outdoor related/hunting related content. That doesn't make them or me subject matter experts. It makes us consumers of hunting related content.
Then we could figure out if we're missing out on real "quality" or just not providing a safe space for marketing types to hawk their products or puff themselves up.
We are all missing out on real quality. Since there is no advertising model deployed here on HC and very little quality content ... marketing types have no interest in hawking products or puffing themselves up. Newbies, experienced contributors and product innovators learn quickly that HC is a closed society.
I take it that you feel that once a thread has gotten its one or two on-topic replies (under current conditions) all further engagement should cease?
No. I do not feel as you described.

K.I.S.S
The simple reason the site does not grow or have more visitors/contributors/new blood is directly related to the lack of hunting content.

Most people enjoy camaraderie and exchanging nuances of whatever it is they're into. Most people also like to have fun and maybe learn a little through participation. If this website were called "Say-Anything-You-Want-Whenever-You-Want.com" nearly 100% of the content would be appropriate. Since this website is called HC.com I'd guesstimate less than 10% of the content is appropriate for people into hunting and 90% is pure closed society fodder.

"Not appreciative of quality content" = quality content rejected.

Everyone is welcome to post hunting-related content. That's on each individual who passes through, including "industry insiders." If one chooses not to, that's on him.

I think there is a better word than your "appropriate." All of the content is "appropriate" for anyone who hunts, or who has anything else going on in his or her life...

Marketing types and singularly-focused animal-killers might not like a free-for-all, but guys who like to sit around a fire after a hunt do.

Thank you Captain Obvious. You're missing the point.

Visitors and even original founding members like me are reluctant to post hunting related content. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to skim the majority of content on the site to figure out a. it's a private party and b. when someone does post hunting related content the post gets hijacked into utter ridiculousness
I think there is a better word than your "appropriate." All of the content is "appropriate" for anyone who hunts, or who has anything else going on in his or her life...
Wrong. All of the content is not appropriate for anyone who hunts. Some of the content is racist, sexist, politically biased AND outright offensive.

Alex must have his hand off the tiller because back in the day none of that crap would ever make it to prime time. If the post is in "Podunk" then everything is appropriate otherwise the multiple forums and segments therein is where specific content is allegedly supposed to be posted.

You could say "Well don't come on the site then!" and you'd be right ... except for one thing ... I predate you on all these sites by years! It's hard to stand idly by, look the other way and ignore what used to be and what now is.

K.I.S.S People who hunt with a spear, a bow, a gun, a sharp stick or their bare hands go to sites called *HUNTING* Country for *HUNTING* content not hundreds of hijacked posts and spending time weeding through the hijacking to parse out the meat.

I've said about all I care to on this subject.

I don't think it's fair for Swampy to be deflecting all of this. I will say that there has been many equipment, hunting and outdoor/indoor cooking threads that were low/no post affairs by the hard-core so I disagree that there hasn't been the content. I love messing with the guys and I certainly don't recall racist and inappropriate content.

I will share my point, not as eloquently as Bob but only because I'm not a writer.
I've told you guys at least a dozen times this same thing, you think it's funny. I wonder why I only come on here 2-3x a year.
Me and a bunch of the old HC guys have a group chat, we come on every morning to say hey and throughout the day, almost everyone chimes in about something. We talk about everything including hunting and shooting archery.
Some of the guys ask about what's going on in here and most guys have come on to see but don't comment because all that's here is politics, music and how to cook steak.
I enjoy each and every person here but if I was to come here daily, it'd be because there's hunting stuff to talk about.
I've tried, lord I've tried. I've posted something about hunting every 6 months and like mentioned a few pages back, it gets a reply or two and then the next 5 pages are crookedeye's funny comments, swampy talking about Nancy Pelosi's cleavage and lord knows what else. I forget how much I despise the site in another 6 months and come back with a new hunting related post and just like a broken record, the same thing happens.
Honestly, I can't imagine why this site stays alive. This is a money hole and the owner doesn't even post or reply, it's like a chat room for 4 people.
Love me, hate me, I don't honestly care but don't wonder why you 4 are the only ones who come on here.
Come on Bob, lets go......................

Lol. You're funny. There's no reluctance. I post infrequently. There's a reason for that. I brace each time for the inevitable BS that will follow but secretly hope in any small way I am contributing. As Jon points out, most posts are not seen as an invitation to contibute or share or reflect but rather a dog whistle to hijack and inject stupid commentary.

I still visit every day and every day is the same. On average it takes me less than 10 to 30-seconds to isolate any hunting related nugget of value and then log out. This is not how thriving and successful outdoor related sites operate.

"Dwell time" is a thing on websites. Dwell time is a log file statistic that captures the amount of time spent on individual web pages and the site in general. The longer the dwell time, the more captivating the content. Anything over 90 seconds is outstanding.
If you don't like general chit-chat when the on-topic conversation fizzles, you don't need to read further.
Why don't *YOU* change your behavior, encourage others to do the same and be more of a contributor than a squatter?

I've been close to leaving this site for years but it's my decades long friendship with the owner that keeps me coming back despite what it's become. If you mean "go" as in go hunting well then ... I'll extend the never-expiring invitation for you to come join me as you have done in the past.

I'm going hunting Sat and Sun morning. I'm gonna sit in the darkness of a Virginia Blue Ridge Mountain forest. Wait patiently for the light and the world to unfold. Listen to the song birds. Watch the turkeys on the roost fly down. Do my best to speak the language. Eat a few Allium tricoccum (wild onions). Nap. Forget there is a pandemic. Forget what my name is. Take the long road back. Do it all again and again until I die.

LOL ...

Good post, Jon.

I understand all that. I've also tried to post hunting topics nearly daily for quite a while after this place hit the skids and nada ... Even though some of the stuff was pretty good, or at least would have opened up much more conversation in the old days...LOL

Very frustrating.

The other stuff is usually in Podunk and usually stays in Podunk, so people can leave it alone if it's not their cup of tea.

Finally, I'm not sure how much energy we should spend on the issue of chit-chat on- or off-topic that the dissatisfied bunch finds distracting or not serious enough.

Once a topic has run its course, it's run its course. We start poking the fire, which I think is natural. It's the way we'd talk if we were all in the same camp together.

It's not a reason not to post in the first place.

Does it run off new members? Maybe, if they start reading on the last page. Who does that? Get the meat up front in the first few pages and move on.

Not my problem if people want to read a book backwards.

I have a feeling there is a system bottleneck that is a bigger hurdle for new members than our loose style around here. Signing up, making your first post, browsing on a cell phone, etc. : All of these seem to be not-so-easy. There are other issues I've had or heard of or suspected but off the top of my head I don't recall them. I'm sure some of the anti-bot measures are in the mix.

Also, as you mentioned, people (new and old) are getting their hunting fix and socializing taken care of elsewhere. We're not big on discussing products any more, so that crowd doesn't come looking. We're not a newbie site with a lot of questions. We all know each other so there's not a lot of personal curiosity, if I can call it that, regarding hunting styles, etc.

We also don't do a lot of video and actually require visitors to read, so we fail the short attention-span and dopamine tests. I could go on, but that's enough for now.

Bob, I was typing to Jon as you were posting, but everything I said to him I'd say to you. The stuff that bothers you DOES usually stay in Podunk, and the fact that some hunting threads meander or shoot off in a direction you don't like is not a reason for anyone to hold back their own thoughts or abstain from starting their own threads.

I think this thread itself is a good example. To me, we WERE talking hunting right up to the point that Jon objected. This has happened before, where you or he have popped in and drawn a much starker line than I would as to what is "hunting talk" and what is not.

Were we talking about your post? No. Not after three or four replies. (And then we wandered back to it, and then off again.) But we were talking about things that came to mind because you posted a hunting topic.

If one option is good but the other option is bad, this place will be even sadder in the future than it is now, but I'll do this: If you can't see my point there, or you think this is on the same level as when Post #1 is about turkey hunting but Post # 9 is about how to rebuild the engine on a '67 Mustang, I'll take into account that we see things very differently before treading on your threads.
101.) Bob Peck - 05/01/2020
The stuff that bothers you DOES usually stay in Podunk,
Uh. No it doesn't. I disagree.

You're making assumptions about me, the site and it's visitors as if you're the SME and sir, you are not.
and the fact that some hunting threads meander or shoot off in a direction you don't like is not a reason for anyone to hold back their own thoughts or abstain from starting their own threads.
O.K one more time. It's not a matter of what I like and don't like. Diversity of opinion, constructive criticism and variety is good.

The point I continue to make and apparently not absorbed or made well is the cause and effect principle is at work here.

90% of the time posting a hunting related thread on this site (cause) will guarantee a hijack and often literally immediately (effect). This is a disincentive for anyone from a newbie to a pro to take the time to post. Period. Full stop. End of story.

Forums are organized for a reason so if you're looking for content and select a particular forum you are guaranteed to see lots of interesting thread titles that quickly devolve and you're left with parsing through the BS to find the good stuff of which there is very little.

I don't know if you're under contract with Alex as the official site moderator or if you're self appointed but who and what you feel should be on this site at the end of the day it's one man's opinion and essentially moot.

HC has become a:

... kill zone for manufacturers who dare wander into the crossfire of hostiles
... frat house not a hunting lodge.
... private non-inclusive club.
... place where newbies are shouted down instead of encouraged.
... place where women and young archers dare not tread because of language, imagery and subject matter.
... an embarrasment to our bowhunting brothers and sisters.
... shell of it's former self.

I want to thank you personally for helping me make a tough and agonizing decision to never come back. You win.

So much for my decades of loyalty to my friend and owner. I believe he'll understand.

I hope you'll stick around. I enjoy your company.
