When I wrote yesterday about the emerging coronavirus police state, this is precisely the type of thing I had in mind. Governor Raimondo (who is already the fourth least popular governor in the nation) isn’t pulling her punches here. In a separate statement she declared she had consulted lawyers and said while she couldn’t close the border, she felt confident she could enforce a quarantine.
Let that sink in for a moment. She was serious enough about potentially closing the borders of her state that she took the question to her lawyers. Having apparently been informed that she’s not constitutionally empowered to take such an action, she fell back to the idea of simply locking all of the New Yorkers indoors and away from the public. Her public statement on that subject was put as bluntly as you would imagine.
“Yesterday I announced and today I reiterated: Anyone coming to Rhode Island in any way from New York must be quarantined. By order. Will be enforced. Enforceable by law.”
So Rhode Island law enforcement officers will forcibly quarantine any New Yorkers in the state. Precisely how they plan to do that isn’t specified. Her executive order applies to anyone who has been in New York in the past 14 days. She is further calling out the National Guard to be stationed at the T.F. Green airport, Amtrak train stations and at bus stops. The Guardsmen will also be “following up with people at local residences.”
The maximum penalty for noncompliance? A fine of $500 and 90 days in prison.
Keep in mind that many (though not all) of the people in question are not tourists looking for hotel rooms. Most of them own second homes in Rhode Island. They pay taxes there and for at least part of the year are residents. But since they also spend time in New York, armed members of the military will be knocking on their doors, following their vehicles and threatening to send them to prison if they dare come out in public.
Yesterday afternoon, state police were set up on the northbound lane of Interstate 95. A prominent sign instructed all passenger vehicles from New York to pull over at the adjacent rest area. Troopers were seen questioning the passengers of the vehicles. This is insanity.
I understand that the pandemic is a serious matter and public officials are struggling to keep people safe. But at the same time, being from New York or having a New York State license plate does not qualify as probable cause to pull anyone over, interrogate them or tell them to turn around and go home. Both of my "kids" (who are 28 and 30 years of age) work for the same large company, every employee of which (including upper management) has had to take a temporary 15% salary cut with suspension of company-matching 401k contributions until all this crap plays out. It's a travel industry outfit, so they've been hit exceptionally hard. Far from complaining, both are grateful to still be employed at good jobs. Then again, they both tend to be exceptions to the general millenial rules.

What is particularly troubling are the medical experts who gleefully demand months of our continued imprisonment. They can’t seem to understand that the medical angle is only one component of this situation. Yes, it’s an important one. So is not creating a depression. Now, there’s nothing shocking that medical people will look at a situation from a purely medical perspective. Back in Kosovo, when my appendix decided to vapor lock, they told me “The surgeon is out doing a MEDCAP (helping locals) and we want to wait until he gets back to see what he wants to do,” to which I replied, “What do you think the surgeon is going to want to do?” They thought about it for a second then prepped me for the OR.
But the medical perspective is not the only perspective. There are other perspectives that need to be considered, like the economy and our liberty, and so we elect people to consider them. See, this is why we are not a technocracy. We are a republic. We normal citizens get the final say in our country’s priorities, and we may not decide that our priorities are exactly the same as Dr. Fauci’s. I, for one, am willing to accept some risk regarding the infection in order to avoid America degenerating into a Road Warrior scenario – unless I can be the Humungous, who really gets a bad rap for his innovative and focused leadership style.
Adults accept risk when balancing various interests. The idea that “It’s not worth one life” is childish and stupid. We have cars. Cars kill 30K people a year. We accept that risk. What’s the proper risk balancing for the Chinese coronavirus? Well, we as citizens need to figure that out. That process is called “politics.” That’s why whenever anyone tells you that “This is no time for politics,” they really mean they don’t want you to have any input into the decision. Without politics, you have a dictatorship, and that seems to be the unspoken theme of a growing number of elected officials and others.
But Americans are not good at being bossed around – well, liberal college grads are, but the rest of us aren’t weak-sauce geebos.
