Oh what fun!

The pack I currently have is made by Rocky - nice pack, horrible boots. My boots melted in my closest but that is another story.
So I actually like the Rocky pack but wish it was a little bigger with maybe an external or internal frame. The problem I have is the pack is so loaded with stuff that I feel like I need a frame.

So I took out my Alice pack the other day and it is simply not big enough and there aren't as many side pockets. Frame is fantastic though. Thought maybe I could take the Alice frame and put in on my Rocky pack. No.
Hanging a framed pack in a tree is also a problem.

So then I got out my fanny pack and put the essentials in it and then the rest went into the backpack. Problem with that set up is the fanny pack doesn't play well with a backpack as the two are trying to occupy the same position on my butt. There is also one additional piece of gear that I have to keep track of. Simpler is better. Always.

So now I'm back to looking at backpacks and took a quick look at Badlands. If you look at these packs there is basically one big compartment and a couple of side pockets. The more the pack holds the fewer the side pockets. It's the side pockets that allow you to quickly get out a grunt tube or find your binoculars when you need them. The one big compartment in a pack is fine for clothes but when you are trying to find individual items it's horrible.

The prices are also pretty high. Their framed pack is over 500.00 and has no side pockets. If I was hiking to a location to camp I can see the pack being useful but I need to put my hands on my release and know where it is quickly.

What am I missing? Don't designers hunt?

Like Bill Clinton, I feel your pain.

Also, there is an excellent parody out there from the old Weekly Standard of Bill agreeing with Hillary on "What difference at this point does it make?" from long ago ... But I digress ...

Badlands packs went in the wrong direction soon after they became popular for going in the right direction. I have a few more comments to make about that, but I will desist.

I would be looking on ebay for their earlier packs (say 2005-20012 just for shits and grins) and if I ever get a minute I will give you a few model names to look for to see if they might fit.

Are you Sonny or Tubbs?
5.) bluecat - 10/31/2019
So, just to pile on a bit. On my Rocky, I've got 4 smaller outside pockets and one larger outside pocket, pocket on top flap and smaller pocket on lower back.

top flap: compass, keys
top right: sheath knife, folder knife, headlamp, small flashlight, extra batteries
lower right: TP, hand sanitizer, paracord
top left: extra release, gps unit
lower left: range finder, scent wafers, bow string wax
larger outside pouch pocket: rattle bag, release, mesh face mask, grunt tube, binoculars, strap with equipment hooks
inside pocket: folder saw with wood and bone blade, license, first aid bag, hand warmers
lower back: bow hook
pants pocket: cell phone

Now put all of that in a large compartment along with a water bottle, harness, gloves, rope etc. and you have a recipe for disaster.

So I see backpacks with great quality just not useable design.

I would actually like to have my kill stuff with me but there is no room: pulley system, butt-out, small tarp, meat bags, ziplocs for heart and liver, string for colon etc.

:-)
You can throw so many manufacturers into that mix. It's like they can't get out of their own way.
8.) bluecat - 10/31/2019
There was a thread awhile back on the dark side where somebody had a Badlands pack that had some seams that had failed or something to that effect. Badlands wouldn't honor the defect even though their products are supposedly guaranteed for life. This thread went on for months and hundreds of posts of people denouncing their loyalty to Badlands for their failure to honor their guarantee. It was quite entertaining.

I'm thinking you could have taken care of the guy's problem and earned some respect as opposed to becoming a public enemy over a small repair job.
9.) Swamp Fox - 10/31/2019
What was their reason for refusing the repair?--- Because they have always trumpeted their "bomb-proof" packs are covered by their bomb-proof warranty ---or words to that effect.

Random thoughts:

Cargo pants/BDUs are your friend.

A bino pack/harness is your friend.

A fanny pack worn in the front is your friend.

A chest pack/ small backpack worn in the front is your friend.

Buddy Lok and Molle and similar pouches/systems are your friend.

I essentially gave up on carrying much "kill kit" gear on most hunts, even when hunting deep (Southern deep, not Western deep, but legit deep nonetheless). The pack requirement is just too much, and even if it weren't, you're not hauling all the meat plus all your gear out in one trip anyway. Especially in the early season, I try to prepare for getting the deer dressed to cool before coming back for it ---which admittedly sometimes also means extra gear to get it in a tree for the interim (swamp, coyotes, eastern mountain lions, etc. etc.)-- but most of the butchering gear stays at the truck until I come back for it.

I say essentially because I do have a kit ready to go to hunt a couple of deep swamp stands one way in and one way out, but I use it so infrequently because of the PITA factor that it's almost not worth mentioning.

Whoever first promoted the idea that you should be able to kill your deer and get it and all your gear out in one trip was obviously a sick, sick man, and not hunting how and where I (mostly) do.

You mean, you don't radio the ranch and let them know you've just downed a giant 10-ptr and then wait until the pickup arrives to your stand with photographers and plenty of ranch hands?

I agree about the cargo pants. Wouldn't hunt without them.

One of the places I'm hunting now is a half-mile walk in, so leaving kill stuff in the truck would not be feasible as it would lead to a mile walk just to go and get it. The game cart is helpful in most areas but it can be burdensome if the terrain is bad. Most of this is done in the dark as I hunt mostly in the late afternoons. All of it sucks. The deer has to come out in bags. It would be even more of a nightmare trying to get a whole deer back and into the Blazer.

I guess if it was easy then everyone would do it, right?
17.) bluecat - 11/01/2019
I tried to find that post but searching forums is a PITA. Anything under Advanced Search yields 0 results. Those things never work.

I think it was someone who had a pack and the threads were pulling through so the guy tried to fix it himself. It didn't work so he wanted Badlands to fix it and they refused because the guy had already tried. It was something like that. It was petty.

I think the thing that made me feel the most like a lazy-ass was this episode of Tred Barta's show (remember Tred?) where he and another guy have to get a bull moose out of the beaver pond it went down in, then make multiple trips to pack it out using a canoe that they had to portage between ponds.

How am I supposed to get a blue ribbon on this project if these stupid swallows keep dying on me? If one’s not croakin’ from exhaustion, another one’s being crushed under the weight of the coconut! I’ve been through thirty of the things and all I’ve proven is that a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times per second. Ugh. At this rate, Jimmy McGillicuddy’s stupid time-traveling car experiment is going to win for sure. I guess I can kiss Harvard goodbye.

Hmm. Maybe I can convince that guy at the pet shop that he sold me dead swallows. There's no reason this project has to be a total loss.

Wear this shirt: on the count of three. No more, no less.

Don’t wear this shirt: on the count of four, nor on the count of two, unless you are then proceeding to three. Five is right out.

This shirt tells the world: “Sure, an African swallow could do it. But then, of course, African swallows are non-migratory.”

Anybody have a quiver that's worth mentioning? The one I have is a two-piece. I like them because it doesn't mess with the site. But this pos only grabs the arrows on one-end and then uses the arrow in the foam as the second attachment point. The hood doesn't even cover all of the broadhead. So the arrow is constantly loose and you have to be careful not to cut yourself.

Outstanding
35.) Swamp Fox - 11/07/2019
I've shot quiver-off almost my entire career, so I might not be much help. But I'm sure you can add a third attachment point and a deeper hood easily if you look around.

If I were looking for a new quiver, I would look at Kwikee (naturally), TreeLimb, Soft Loc and TightSpot. As far as I can tell, everyone else is just excess noise. I have long experience with each of them except the TightSpot, and they do the job. No major complaints.

By the way, do not visit TheTightSpot.com unless you're feeling frisky. :wink

But don't let me stop you ... :shh::p

A few years ago my wife and son gave me the two-piece Octane quiver. It had a magnet in the hood that held the arrows in place rather than foam. The problem was that they had an engineering/manufacturing defect with the aluminum part that attached each half to the bow that caused them to just sheer right off when you tried to tighten them down at all. I contacted Octane and they acknowledged the problem, saying it was an issue with one of their suppliers, but that it had since been worked out. They sent me replacements for the failed parts...and the replacements promptly failed in exactly the same way. A shame, really, as I really liked everything else about the quiver.

What is this thing you call a radio? I have 5G and 5 bars on my thousand dollar phone (as I should), which completely fascinates me during those long sits in the stand (as it should) because in addition to the apps and the social media I can diddle with while waiting for something interesting to happen, I can also make a phone call without needing a dime.

I've had a basic Streamlight TLR-1 (I say "basic" because they offer quite a few variants) mounted to my M&P9 for about 8 or so years now, and I'm pretty happy with it. It's still using the original CR123 batteries I put in it when I first bought it, and is still blindingly bright. It's rugged, and the rocker switch (which has "Off", "On" and "Momentary" positions) is ambidextrous and easily manipulated with your trigger finger. It's a bit larger than some other currently available options, but since I only have it mounted when at home that's not an issue.

81.) bluecat - 01/16/2020
Great, I thought that Streamlight would come up. Does this pretty much mount to any pistol (with underside mounting capability of course)? In other words, I could put this on any pistol that accepts lights? I know there are certain rails. Couldn't tell you what the rail is on a Glock right now.

What is momentary?

What is cost?

Yes, it requires either a Picatinny or Glock rail (Glock has their own proprietary rail, of course) on the underside of the frame in front of the trigger guard, and comes with hardware for using either.
What is momentary?
That means that when you take your finger off the switch it returns to the "Off" position and the light deactivates. That's as opposed to the "On" position, which stays in that position (with the light activated) even after you remove your finger from the switch. If you shoot right-handed, you simply push the switch up for "Momentary" and down for "On". That's reversed if you're shooting southpaw.
What is cost?
That's how much money you have to pay in order to buy something.

I kid! I kid!

I see it on Amazon for ~$118 right now. But I'm sure you can pick it up cheaper if you look/wait for sales.
Because of tensions with local Native Americans, the first Raleigh-sponsored settlement on Roanoke Island lasted only a short period (1585–86). The next year approximately 100 settlers under Gov. John White attempted to colonize the same site. White went back to England to get supplies but was delayed by the Spanish Armada. By the time he returned to the island in August 1590, everyone had vanished. The only trace of the “Lost Colony” was the word CROATOAN carved on a post of the palisade erected by the settlers and the letters CRO on a tree. The group may have been annihilated by hostile Native Americans or may have joined a friendly tribe. In any event, the mystery of the Lost Colony has never been solved.
Mine, being the "basic" TLR-1 (it was the only version available when I bought it) is 300 lumens, which is more than bright enough for indoor use. The "HL" variant delivers 800 lumens, and some others might as well.

148.) Swamp Fox - 01/26/2020
So, who's shot a new bow in the last few years?

Not me, LOL.

I think the last bow I tried was the Mathews Heli-M (sp?), which I liked feelz-wise, but I was just out kicking tires and not in the market. Besides, it had that gawd-awful waffle riser, which I see they phased out starting in 2016, thank goodness. So now I can put a toe back in the water.

[Before I forget, there used to be a section on the Mathews site with pics and specs of discontinued bows going back to the Creation but I don't see it now....also other stuff like cam charts and that sort of thing. Did I miss it, or can anyone point me to that material? --I do have the cam chart but am looking for everything else.]

Let's start it off with the Halon and the little-mentioned Z3. Impressions? First- hand experience? Rumors or flat-out malarkey?

I'm looking to pile up a list of bows that won't take my arm off that I can keep an eye out for if they fall out the back of a truck or something. I tend to like bows in the 32-34-inch range with longer brace heights but I'm not married to the concept. I can shoot some shorter/racier bows better than I thought I could. As I drop draw-weight, speed becomes a more important factor for me than it used to be. But I stilll insist on a bow that's fun to shoot.

I watched a video of Lee Lakosky shooting the new VCR or VHS or XJC or whatever it is and he's actually grimacing as he pulls back on a huge droptine, LOL. Granted,, he was seated in a box blind and that can be an awkward way to draw, but it didn't look all that easy to start and get back even on the upright shots. All the reviews say it's a "smooth draw" though, LOL.

Anyhoo, bang away if you have something to say...
149.) bluecat - 01/26/2020
I don't know if I can offer a lot. It seems you can pick up some old new stock on Archery Talk sometimes for about half of original price. Also, as you know, people always dump their bows for the latest and greatest but sometimes the newer stuff tanks.

I shoot 60 pounds now and it is so enjoyable to shoot. I used to shoot 70.

New bow prices are so outrageous, that if I get another bow, I might go the "like new" route.
150.) bluecat - 01/26/2020
I also shoot longer axle bows. They are harder to find, but I like them and I think they shoot better.

For a thousand bucks,I don't need a new bow. But I like to goof around with "'project bows" for this or that special niche "need" every once in a while. I enjoy rigging them and setting them up to my idea of the perfect rig for that use.

I've had good luck buying used bows, with one exception. As it happens, that exception suddenly exploded with a loud "Pow!" a year or two ago while hanging peacefully on a hook behind my desk. ["Did you jump?" ---"Yeah, a little bit..." --- Punchline from a salty joke about parachuting ... LOL] so I'm thinking about rebuilding it from the ground up (or from the riser up) for grins and giggles. I'll have to learn a bunch of things and invest in some shop equipment though, so it's not happening anytime soon, LOL (I'm looking at you, Jon ... :-)) But I do have my eye on a couple of ebay deals for bows I'd strip for parts.

I'd set it up in the the low-to-mid 50's and use it to chase turkeys without a blind (because my memory of exactly how frustrating that always was seems to be fading) and as a practice bow to ease into the big-boy bows after those periods of not shooting anything at all for a while, which seem to be longer and more frequent lately.

160.) Jon - 01/29/2020
Swampy, since you have only discussed one brand of bow, are you strictly looking only at Matthews?
If not, as always there are at least 10 manufacturers who make good stuff and good used stuff is always out there.
I've gone away from BowTech but not because they don't have good stuff, they sure do. I shot an Obsession a few years ago and fell in love with it. I also shoot 60lbs now and won't ever go back to 70, it just isn't needed for me.
I can't comment on anything to do with Archery talk, I ran away from that place about 5 years ago because it's impossible to get good advice there, everyone's dick is the biggest and everyone has the best bow in the world, **** those guys. Plus, you have to be a paid member to list anything, they can keep that cesspool.

I don't work on anyone's bows anymore, I have all my equipment and will work on my own stuff but lost the energy to mess with anyone elses.
161.) Swamp Fox - 01/30/2020
Not looking at just Mathews. Mentioned them because that's the only one I've even half-way kept up with the last several years. I have liked some Elite bows over the years, and a small number of Bowtechs. Have never handled an Obsession but I know some people really like them.

Just was curious who's made what in the last few years that might suit me. Sixty pounds or less, quiet, not an arm- ripper, fun to shoot, looks good (LOL) ... yada yada yada ...

Didn't know AT required membership for listing. That's disappointing. I've got a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell. Might be time to bring back Swampy's Swap Shop & Flea Market for the seven or eight of us who read here, LOL.

This used purchase went through every tuning trick it could including the best bow tech in the area, a complete tear-down, support from Mathews, flipping the limbs, etc. I finally got it to shoot decently with a dropaway pushed all the way back and very short arrows, LOL. I used to think twice every time I loaded the launcher :ek:

Since I have apparently permanently welded a very nice after-market grip on to the riser (this was before I knew that it really is important to know the differences in automotive adhesives, LOL) I am going to try to rebuild the new bow around the old riser just because I pathologically insist on doing things the hard way and never give up on anything until it is completely worn out or useless.

:omg:

:groan:

But what the hell ... I figure I'll learn something in the process.
165.) bluecat - 01/30/2020
You don't have to pay to list. I sell stuff on there all the time. You have to pay to advertise your business.

You can get some never used bows on there from some retailers (with warranty) that occasionally sell older stock (a year or so). They will list the model, the axle to axle, draw weight etc. For example a Hoyt Defiant would be around 700.00 and they listed for about 1200. It's whatever they have in stock and they aren't available all the time.

You can also pick up a Last Chance Archery Press pretty cheap through some of the retailers there. I have one and love it.

Like any forum, you quickly learn who is knowledgeable. There are several people on there that have taught me quite a bit about tuning. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Evidently, if you own a business in the archery realm, you are advertising if you try to sell something. I was just a guy on AT, went by Jonnybow, didn't try to advertise at all, was trying to sell some left over parts. I got a message from "admin" that told me I'd have to become a paid member to sell. I told them to GFY, I'd never go back if this is how they treat a member who was there from the beginning. I think my membership number was 25. I'll never go back there, even to look in.

Swampy, I've honestly not looked at anything in the past few years new or used because my 4 year old Obsession is treating my great and I don't need a new bow.
Like always, I'd be starting fresh if I was in the market again and go shoot as many as I could. I'm also a 34" A-A guy so that alone narrows the field.

Let me tell you about the amazing disappearing gobbler, whose running buddies stomped on and flailed at--within sight--and who vanished into thin air when I went to pick him up.

"Missed him by *that* much ..."
Lets say you have 20, 30 40 and 50yd pins on your bow that shoots 300FPS. You are shooting at a target that's 6' away (that's 2 yards for you from WV and NC). Which pin do you use?
Since I can't shoot multi-pins worth a flip, all my hunting sights are single pins, and I make an adjustment, either slider or mental.

It takes practice.

Outstanding
I've used it for turkey season and now a maiden voyage in deer season. It's a super quiver. I wish the hood was a little deeper but all in all I'm very happy. I don't worry about arrows coming loose and it is firmly attached with two grippers per arrow. Easy detach too.

To be fair though, the broadheads I use are rather long.

DP, what brand/model is your thermometer? Does it have flexible corded probes? I'm imagining you have a control cockpit set up by your big screen so that you can simulatenously watch the Cowboys and see meat temps.

I think I'm wanting something with multiple probes so I can get an internal and an ambient temperature. I don't need blu-tooth - it's too far from smoker to home to think that would work.

Something that's nice and not too expensive. I'll put a few bucks in the reference jar on my way out.

I still have my 4-probe iGrill2 that I got for Christmas a few years ago. It wasn't cheap, but at the time it was the best thing going...at least for my needs. I don't know what kind of distance you're talking about, but the bluetooth range is more than adequate no matter where in the house I am. But then again my smoker is just on the back porch about 6' from the back door.

Now though there are several competing brands/models that I think represent a better value, based on fairly consistent reviews about that I've read about their performance, and that I will be looking into when it comes time for a replacement. For instance there's the Inkbird IBT-4XS that appears to do everything it iGrill2 does, but for far less cost (currently $52 on Amazon, down from the usual $65), though it also uses Bluetooth. That's something you're going to find with most of the more-bells-and-whistles models because they're geared toward use with a mobile device app, and being battery-powered thermometers, BT is preferred over Wi-Fi because of the former's significantly lower power requirements.

If Bluetooth just won't handle the distance you're using it over then you'll need to look at some of the models that use longer ranged frequencies and proprietary protocols, like the ThermoPro line, or the Mavericks. All of the ones that I'm familiar with only support 2 probes though, so I haven't looked into them in any depth (save for the old Maverick that I had as my first remote thermo, before I got the iGrill2).

Whatever you go with, be prepared to buy extra probes as replacements...or even be proactive and buy a couple to have as spares. One thing that all of these units have in common, as far as I've been able to tell, is that the probes are prone to failure with any kind of regular use. I've had to replace several, though I did get 1 of them replaced for free on the Maverick because it went bad after only the 3rd use. But they all seem to suck as far as durability goes.

I have a bunch of different quivers and like most of them, but I keep leaving my Weber thermometers out by the cooker and they don't like all the rain. It's like $12 every frickin' time ... I keep telling myself I used to just check my watch ...

The thing I like about them, though, is that they tell me the temperature ... Of both the air and the meat, and also of my fingers if I hold them there.

The thing I don't like is that I have to actually stick them in the meat to read 'em, instead of the information being telepathically transported to me by 6G or [better!] 7G microwaves that I can access from my telephonic device directly from the grid thingie in the cooker...

That way I could cook and make phone calls, too ...

I recall now you had some problems with your probe...

I think given the information I may just continue to use the simple stick and click models that don't involve a floppy probe. I've got about a 50 yard walk from the house to the lean-to where all the magic happens. Ever hear of the Bearded Butchers? They have some YouTube stuff that I thiink you would enjoy. They smoke everything on their Trager so you already have something in common.

Why don't you put the thermometers in your quiver?
