I guess you guys can shoot velvet bucks in Sept. down there. Most of our older bucks are hard antlered by the first week of Sept.

Okay, that was good.

You have to be this (making motion with hands) tall before you can hunt whitetail.
15.) bluecat - 10/07/2019
So were those his rattlin' antlers in the foreground? I might want to get a set of those.
16.) Swamp Fox - 10/07/2019
From what I understand, those are the buck's "2018" sheds, picked up in February this year.
17.) Swamp Fox - 10/14/2019
It always amazes me that no one comes across any kills across the whole damn country except in the Carolinas this time of year ... :re: ....
18.) bluecat - 10/15/2019
Working on it. Been out numerous times but just a few visuals. Fall is here and judging by trail cam pics and the does in my yard, I'm going to find a stupid deer soon.
19.) billy b - 10/15/2019
The bucks around here were mostly rubbed off about three weeks ago.
20.) Jon - 10/15/2019
It's early muzzleloader season here. Was out last night and saw a ton of deer but just after last light, had a really tall 8pt come in. He was seen at 702pm, last light was 657pm. I watched him walk off so I didn't spook him at all. Going back in this afternoon for another try. It's starting to get fun around here!
21.) DParker - 10/15/2019
This past Saturday morning was the first chance I had to get out, because it was the first time the temperature has been low enough to keep you from being bled dry by mosquitoes on the walk in/out. In two days we went from ~90°F to needing thermal underwear and gloves in the morning. Fall? Never heard of it. The only deer I saw was a doe that was bedded down in some thick stuff about 20 yds from where I set up. I made a hell of a racket getting there, what with acorns covering just about every sq foot of ground. But she waited until I got all situated, then jumped up and made a bee-line for parts unknown. Oh well...at least the squirrels kept me company.
22.) Jon - 10/16/2019
Went out last night with the muzzleloader to sit on the edge of a bean field. There are still some green edamame beans in the field and the deer flock to them.
The wind was blowing east to west and the edge of the field is the same, the box blind I was in sits about in the middle of the field edge lengthwise. I was looking east most of the sit since I thought deer wouldn't come out into the field to my west based on the wind. As usual, deer piled into the field about 615pm and stayed out in the beans. I was watching about a dozen does within 80yds of the stand and decided to look over my shoulder off to the west. Sure enough, there was a big body about 120yds down the field edge. I glassed it and realized it was a buck. I had to open the window and take the shade down making some noise but he was content eating the beans.
I decided to take him although I knew he wasn't giant, he looked even with his ears and was certainly tall enough.
Squeezing off the shot, the smoke clears and I watch him run further into the beans and then circle back around and duck into the CRP. I heard a crash and then heard deer blowing, wasn't sure if i missed him and it was him that was blowing or if he was dead and other deer were blowing.
Got down and got on blood pretty quickly in the beans, followed it for about 30yds and then it stopped. I decided to just go into the CRP where I thought he went and he was lying right there, 5yds into the CRP. Perfect shot, took out both lungs and the top of his heart.
He's a main frame 10pt with a broken tine and a kicker at the base of his right antler. A bit more narrow than we like to take unfortunately.
Fun night for sure

Are you hunting with a ground blind? Just curious.

Well, there's a nice start to the season. Congratulations.
Are you hunting with a ground blind? Just curious.
Not as such, no. I do stay on the ground, usually right up against a tree (to my back) with a little (usually dead) foliage about 2 ft high or so all around me. That has made for surprisingly effective cover over the years, and I've had numerous critters (deer include) walk right up to/past me so long as I stay still. Of course, drawing a bow without getting busted is a lot more challenging than it would be in a blind/tree stand...but that's been half the fun.

Cool. Two years ago when I was in Nebraska, my friend dropped me off and told me where the stand was. It was cold and blowing hard. When I got to the stand I realized it wasn't a good fit for me. I went ahead and climbed up and sat. It was too high and too exposed both in terms of visibility and weather. There was no way I was going to be able to sit all day in that thing freezing. So I got down and found a nearby cedar tree that was about 6 feet tall and gnarled up. I created a little pocket, got out my bowholder and waited. It was a comfortable spot away from the wind and totally secluded. It was about 15 yards from the stand I was supposed to hunt. Over the course of the day, I had deer walk within range that were does. At one point I heard a grunt, looked up and a buck walked right passed the tree. He was about 2 yards from me. He walked over to the decoy (which was helpful in diverting his attention) and I was able to get a broadside shot at about 12 yards. Very adaptive way to hunt if you can pull off the drawing.

I'd upload some more pics but I'm getting blocked for files that are too big. These have been sent to me (mostly on my phone) and then I put them on my desktop in the Pics folder. When I try to upload them "From computer" to HC, they won't go. I made a feeble attempt at resizing but didn't see how to do this.

Am I missing something, or is this just "The Bowcountry Way"?
29.) bluecat - 10/17/2019
You may have to "scale" them first which would reduce the bytes considerably. Most raw pics such as what was sent to you are large in terms of size which means lots of bytes.
30.) Swamp Fox - 10/17/2019
Yeah, I've tried that before by trial and error. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This time it didn't seem to be working the way I thought it was supposed to. Maybe something in Paint has been changed and I wasn't seeing changes made when I thought I should have been seeing them. I'll give it another whirl.
31.) Swamp Fox - 10/18/2019
Nope. Won't let me upload. Not even giving me a message about file too big. Upload button just disappears. Have resized images down to about 72% which I think puts them in range.

I post my pictures on most forums from imgur. Once photobucket started playing games, I found imgur and have been hosting my pictures from there. Easy to use and post pictures to/from and they let you resize right from the site.

What this guy^ said.
35.) Swamp Fox - 10/18/2019
I had fogotten that this site only loaded links or thumbnails.
And that you had to use a hosting site otherwise. I have accts at Imgur and Flickr. I guess there's some way to send photos received on your phone directly over there?

Yep. Install the Imgur app on your phone and it will show up as one of the options when you want to "share" a photo.

Thanks. I'll look into that.
