...I'm gettin' drunk....I'm feelin' mellow...

Actually, I'm enjoying a fine craft brew at my favorite watering hole to celebrate still being alive. The wife was out all day with her sister, our daughter and our granddaughter having a girls' day out, so I decided to take the opportunity to do tackle a small electrical chore (you can already smell the stupidity, can't you?). As part of my home automation kick I bought and installed a Ring doorbell (does video, motion sensing, etc) a while back, but it's never worked reliably due to my doorbell transformer being an old and underpowered model. So I ordered a new one that outputs more juice and have bee waiting for a weekend when it's not a billion degrees in the attic (where the old transformer is) to do the replacement.

Today was just such a day.

So the first dumb thing I did was decide to do electrical work in the attic while nobody else was home.

The second display of stupidity was assuming that because the doorbell no longer rang after I switched off what I *thought* was the correct circuit breaker that I in fact had the correct breaker (having forgotten that one of the bits of flakiness that the doorbell exhibited was not reliably triggering the chime).

The third bit of idiocy was not bothering to use my multimeter (which I had with me) to double-check that there was no current going to the old transformer....because...y'know...I was sure I'd killed the juice.

So I'm in the attic straddling the opening for the ladder, having removed the wiring nuts from the old transformer...and twisting in one of the wires from the new-and-improved unit when my left arm inadvertently brushes up against the other exposed wire.

Guess what? I did not, in fact, have the correct breaker turned off. But luck was with me, I guess. After determining that I still had a pulse...and once feeling had returned to my left arm..I climbed down, went to the garage and turned off every damned 15A breaker in the box. And only after I verified the efficacy of that technique with my multimeter did I continue on with the chore ate hand.

And still, the doorbell doesn't do its job correctly.


Nonetheless, the moral of the story is: Don't be stupid and cut corners like I did (in spite of being more than old enough to know better). But I'm not dead, so....cheers.

tl;dr: Today I was stupid, but lucky. Don't be today's me.

you should of took a selfie, before you put in the new switch..that way if anything went wrong it would make the top 10 list...
