1.) Swamp Fox - 06/06/2018
What's everyone doing for mobile data these days? Because I'm on the road again, I'm not available for a home/office system much, and that means I'm sucking up mobile data like crazy. I used to have a dedicated Verizon hot-spot, then got a smartphone thinking I could use it in place of the hot-spot (while most of my internet use would be office/home) since I had to pay for a bit of data with the phone anyway.

Now that that little bit of mobile data is no longer sufficient, I'm reevaluating again. It looks like dedicated hot-spots from T-Mobile, Total Wireless, Sprint and even Verizon would be more cost-effective than using the Verizon phone as a hot-spot.

I keep seeing everyone staring at their phones all day watching videos of puppies in boxes and people falling into fountains, and wonder how they're paying for all that knowledge on the information superhighway.

I just want to get some work done and chat with my friends on Hunting Country about their archery knowledge (and welcome new members).

I'm guessing you won't need a lot of data for that. lol!
3.) DParker - 06/07/2018
First, which mobile carrier are you currently with?

Second, let's define exactly what "little bit of mobile data is no longer sufficient" means, as in...how little is the amount of data that's included per month with your current mobile plan, and by how much are you thinking that isn't sufficient compared with what you now need?

Third, I'm assuming that when you need to use data you're generally not in the vicinity of a free Wi-Fi hot-spot you could be connecting to. Or is that something you haven't tried yet?

Remember, pics of farmer's daughter or it didn't happen.
5.) Jon - 06/07/2018
I actually use a mobile hot spot for my house since we don't have the option of cable'd internet out in the sticks. I use Verizon for the hot spot and I have an AT&T phone.
My phone is on a 10G plan for data, I share it with my daughter which means she uses 8.5G and I use less than 1G.
How much data are you using?
6.) crookedeye - 06/07/2018
i have 4 gigs plus a waffler with my mobile data..
7.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2018
I'd say I'm easily going through 8GB per month, and that's being stingy and cutting back my "normal" entertainment usage to next to nothing. By that I mean I'm not on HC or Youtube, I'm not shopping or surfing or reading the news/commentary, etc. I anticipate that my need will increase well beyond that in the not-too-distant future.

I can't really utilize public wi-fi since almost everything I REALLY need an internet connection for requires security. I think I can read using public wi-fi, but shouldn't be doing anything that requires signing in? Checking email, for instance. Also, I'd hate to have my HC account hacked and someone assume my identity for good and not for evil.

Also. a lot of places I go don't have public wi-fi or cabled internet, which is why I got my first hot-spot in the first place.

I'm probably going to have to suck it up and replace the Spectrum bill for unlimited data that I had for my home/office with a big data plan on a hot-spot. The goal was to save a little money while having enough data away from home, but right now I'm not seeing how the two goals aren't mutually exclusive.

Verizon is/was charging me $35 for the first 2 gigs on my smartphone, which is outrageous, but it was cheaper than the 5 gig hot-spot when I used the hot-spot sparingly. As I look at dedicated hot-spots with huge .... data plans.., the math seems to indicate that there's a distinct possibility that it could be bye-bye smartphone---hello flip phone again ... LOL

Should I do it? :pop::p:-)
8.) DParker - 06/07/2018
I take it that you're currently using your phone as a hot-spot for a laptop/notebook computer?
I'd say I'm easily going through 8GB per month, and that's being stingy and cutting back my "normal" entertainment usage to next to nothing. That's an average of about 270MB/day, 7 days/week, which is a lot of data. It's the equivalent of something like streaming 4.5 hours of hi-bit rate music (MP3 audio) every day, or ~45 minutes of video every day. Is this something work-related? Or do you possibly have something going on in the background on your phone or laptop that you're not aware of that's chewing up cellular data? That's pretty common.
I can't really utilize public wi-fi since almost everything I REALLY need an internet connection for requires security. Anything requiring security should be going across an encrypted SSL connection anyway. Think the "https" (note that extra "s", which stands for "secure", compared with the usual "http") protocol designator you see in your browser's URL bar when you access secure sites like your bank, Amazon, etc. This means that all of the data being exchanged between your computing device (PC, tablet, phone, etc) and the website is encrypted, including your login info, so that even if someone were "sniffing" the airwaves to intercept Wi-Fi traffic, any data they're able to see will be meaningless gobbledygook to them. If you're not using encrypted connections then you have a problem already. Remember that your cellular connection is even more "public" and spread over a larger area than that with a nearby Wi-Fi hot-spot.
Also. a lot of places I go don't have public wi-fi or cabled internet, which is why I got my first hot-spot in the first place.
Yeah, but using those that are available whenever possible will still cut down on your total cellular data usage to at least some degree.

According to Verizon's current plan info, that $35/mo is for the whole package, not just the data. As a result, you can get an 8GB version of the same plan for $70/mo. So 4x the data allowance, but only 2x the total cost (not counting taxes, fees and all of the other stuff they tack onto your bill). Or, for another $5/mo ($75 total, which appears to require that you enroll in AutoPay, which I prefer anyway) you can get their unlimited data plan, which would be the way to go if you're routinely exceeding 8GB of usage/mo.

Of course, there are a lot of other providers and options, but I don't have the time to look at all of them now. Maybe later tonight.
9.) bluecat - 06/07/2018
I would just get a map of all the Starbucks in your path. They don't mind if you come in, set up office, use their wifi and just hang out as long as you need to. Clean restrooms, good lighting and conversation. You don't have to buy anything anymore as that would be racism or some sort of ism. Winning.
10.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2018
LOL ...

It would be like homeless people and people with no AC taking naps in the public library ...

I know I lose some data to phone/app updates and stuff like that, but I can't think of anything else sucking up data. Eight gbs seem to be going down the drain much faster than in DParker's calculation, though. I try not to have multiple things open, etc. It's hard to figure business and personal "administrative' use for an example, but I can say if I spend an evening goofing on HC, reading some blogs and watching some music videos the way I used to do, Ima feel it in the morning.

It's the sea chanties that always get me ...
14.) Swamp Fox - 06/07/2018
I follow what you're saying, DP.

Verizon's smallest plan for smartphones (that I know of) is $35 for 2 gb. I used to pay $50 for 5 on a hot-spot and wasn't using it all. But that was with an unlimited plan back at headquarters, and not a very high need to use data from the hot-spot. Now the need for mobile data is more urgent and constant, and I was on borrowed time with Spectrum's special offer for the home/office. So rather than pay for two services--one being overkill in a fixed location and one being inadequate on the go--I've hit on the idea of going 100% mobile.

According to an article I read, I might be able to get 15 gb for $60 from Total Wireless, or 10 for 50 from T-Mobile or Sprint (both require the purchase of equipment-- 100 or 49 bucks, respectively).
15.) crookedeye - 06/07/2018

17.) bluecat - 06/07/2018
When you talk to yourself, does that really count toward your data useage?

30.) crookedeye - 06/08/2018
I always use to like that pic of billy back in the 1960's with that buck he shot. he had that truckers cap on..it seemed like every year around the deer hunting contest he would post that pic..
31.) bluecat - 06/08/2018
Swampy, are you going to make us guess what your new job is?

I guess, I'll start.

Given your vast array of knowledge of camping, hunting, pulleys and mechanical devices designed to produce an advantage, scent-free clothing and scent destroying machines, canoeing, concealed carry .380 caliber champion, clunker Broncos and deer stands, I think you are either a tilt-o-whirl operator or a barista for Starbucks.

Amirite?

There's still some undelivered prizes for the contests back in the supply room. Should I pick something out?

P.S. Log in during smoke break and set us all straight.

37.) crookedeye - 06/08/2018
keep it smoking, who knows after the 3rd hour if its doing any good
38.) bluecat - 06/08/2018
I'm just trying to think of the environment. The plume of smoke hanging over Nebraska is probably going to bring out the meth teams. Do you wear goggles?

I don't think you would ruin it. Season it, wrap it in plastic overnight, put fat on top so it drips through meat, 225 until it's 180 then wrap and take up to 190 or so. Ask Billy, he also has one of those smokers built by an old world craftsman.

You need to think of the swag factor after you pull it off. The chicks man. Chicks love a ...never mind.

I'll just say you can pick something from the bottom shelf or buy more tickets. :wink

I DO have a history as a carnie, as I operated a Ferris Wheel for several years, and I will admit that most of my strengths are not being utilized as I've tried to survive the Obama recovery. However, the Spray-On Tan Van and the Secession Flag business continue on a strong trajectory, compensating somewhat for the precipitous decline in G-Puddles Prevention Kit sales.
