I've been looking for a tree memorial (or similar) for a friend who passed away last week and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. He was a hunter and a fine figure of a man, and ideally I'd like to find something to be planted in SC.

The closest I've gotten to something appropriate is a program planting memorial trees on National Forest land, but there's no requesting where the tree be planted. I don't want to think of him spinning in his grave because the tree isn't exactly where he would have put it himself ... He was like that, LOL.

So, I'm taking suggestions and ideas from the peanut gallery. Give me some conservation/sportsman/veteran groups that I can look into for memorials.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Maybe go to camp Swampy and plant a fruit or nut bearing tree so the tree can provide food and be a memorial both. Maybe he would appreciate that.

I like that.

Every time you walk by that tree, you will remember him and recall a memory. And if deer or squirrels or possums get to enjoy the fruit, that tree would be giving a lot of life.

I believe the forest service will provide free trees sometimes. I looked up arbor day but it appears that each state celebrates it at a different time. SC is in December and NC is in March? Had no idea.

I'm going to check Quail Unlimited and the Quality Deer Management Association when I get a second. QU has a seed program, but I don't know about trees. I'm pretty sure some hunting group can hook you up with saplings, especially sawtooth oak, which bear mast pretty quickly. I'm guessing it's either the National Wild Turkey Federation or QDMA, or both.

I found two groups that will plant trees on NF land. One has some nice keepsakes for whomever you name, while one will plant one or more trees in one of several areas, and you can choose which. These include a swamp in Florida, which would be appropriate in the absence of anything similar in SC. His son (my age) enjoys hunting around any kind of water, so this option and planting something at Camp Swampy are the two options in the lead right now.

Interesting. National Arbor Day is in April, but states have their own days, supposedly based on best planting dates. But get this: NC March, SC December, Georgia February.


I'd love to figure out how SC chose December, LOL.
