It occurred to me that the brown patch of hair might just be stained. Notice how the middle of the antlers are stained dark chocolate. I wonder if whatever he was rubbing on stained his hair too. What do you think?[/B]

Awesome deer, awesome mount. Your guy done good! (And you did, too, lol.)
I think you're right about the dark hair/stain. Resin will pick up everything. I also notice that Northern deer and/or older deer seem to have something going on on the top of the head that I don't see all the time. Kind of a little toupee, LOL. We have our share of chocolate racks but that there's something different.
Do you think he was/ could have been rubbing on a lot of sappy trees?

That's a great buck Rich, it'll be tuff to do better than that, he's beautiful, did you have any pics of him in velvet, if so was his forehead brown in the pics? I've never heard of that happening but I can see how it might have. Again, beautiful buck!!!

Maples, cedars and pines come straight to mind. You may have some local trees that I don't know about. I've heard honey locusts can be sappy but we don't have them here that I know of. You are I think you're in the right area for them, though, I think. For some reason, I pay attention to factoids about them. I think they're a pretty cool tree, LOL.
I think birch trees can be sappy (again, not local).
Bucks around here like to rub on a tree I call hornbeam, but I'm not really sure it's hornbeam. It doesn't have a really sticky resin like pine, but it is on the juicy side.
By local lore, a dark-horned buck around here is thought to be a "swamp buck"--- But other than mud, I don't have a strong feeling about what those bucks are rubbing on their horns that makes them extra sticky and stained, compared to a buck who lives "on the hill" and is rubbing on pine sap all day.
I mean, like, who really nos all this stuff anyway? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rich, awesome buck!
We have allot of cedars here that the bucks love to rub on and most of my bucks have that same exact dark patch on their head and lower part of their antlers. I never gave it much thought, assumed all bucks have that dark cap. Who new

For the record I don't think pines are doing that to your deer. Where I'm hunting the bucks rub white pines almost exclusively with a touch of maple thrown in, and they don't have that dark patch.
As a matter of fact almost none of the deer here look like your buck. I could prove it with a ton of pics but I don't have the energy. I'm thinking it's more genetics than anything else, but what do I know?

This is my buck from 2015 and this is what they mostly look like here. They get gray in the face and some dark color but not the dark spot across the entire forehead.

[B]I don't remember any other bucks from around here having a dark patch like that. It could just be coincidence that the antlers are dark in the middle too. Heck, the taxidermist might have added a little color there, you know, for a more dramatic effect :-)[/B]
