Especially for guys who aren't on here all the time: How do you find things to read when you first log in and find one or more big running threads dominating the recent posts list? I don't see a "Go to last post read" setting here as you see on some sites, but I didn't put much effort into looking. Is there one? Or do you have to remember where you left off and try to find that spot? Or do you just go back a page or two and call it good? I'm also not too up on thread subscriptions and notifications, so if people have comments about those topics I'd like to know how people use them.
Most (?) of the big threads are social, podunking, music or something like that, rather than outdoors-related. I know some people don't like mega-threads, and I wonder if that is because the search function here is often inadequate, or if people just don't like running threads to begin with. I can see the benefit of keeping related information together, but I think there's a point of diminishing returns, both for the reader and for site traffic. If SEARCH doesn't work well, though, all bets are off. What does everyone think? |
