TX Parks and Wildlife puts metal signs up to mark public land hunting units...and the trees just eat them.

2.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2017
It's really kind of amazing how quickly a tree will grow. I went looking for examples of old "catfaced" trees growing over their scars (from resin harvesting for turpentine and rosin) and found this , LOL. I don't know if it's manipulated or not. Below it is a tree growing over its old resin trough. Pines grow very fast. You'll lose steps and stands pretty quick if you don't take care of them every year.

Catface:

Bonus piano growing around tree:

3.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2017
Well, I don't know where all that extra stuff came from. I just wanted the piano pic.

But a bonus is a bonus, I guess.
4.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2017
This is what resin collection looks like. The second pic shows why they call it catface ... Think whiskers. The slashes progress up the tree, as each slash or group of slashes quits producing sap.

5.) bluecat - 12/06/2017
Does that kill the tree Swamp?
6.) billy b - 12/06/2017
That's all pretty neat.
7.) Swamp Fox - 12/06/2017
Does that kill the tree Swamp?
No, not this method. At least not in and of itself. The first tree I posted is probably at least five or seven years past its last use as a sap tree. At least that's my guess. The black marks on it are from controlled burns (which might be too obvious, but I'll say so anyway, LOL). The sunken cavity might be from insect infestation, which may or may not kill the tree eventually.

They used to use a method (pre-20th century) callled boxing that cut into the tree fairly deeply to to use it to catch its own sap, but when they went to this method using gutters, troughs and cups to catch the resin they were able to keep the trees alive and not weaken them. Boxing killed trees relatively quickly, or at least put them at high risk, thus the newer method. The cups used to catch the resin are called Herty cups, after the guy who came up with the method. They're clay or metal.

These resin trees are either slash pine or longleaf pine, typically. People are trying to bring back the longleaf pine so I doubt they get tapped much anymore, but there is no shortage of slash pine, LOL. There's hardly any U.S. turpentine or "pine tar" industry in the U. S. these days, at least compared to what it once was, so anyone who's still tapping pine trees is doing it on a fairly small scale. The resin and its derivatives have all sorts of uses. I'll see if I can dig something up.

I've seen pine tar soap, but never tried it. There are supposed to be healthy skin and disinfectant properties to pine products (think PineSol). My dad loved turpentine for all sorts of things, not just cleaning paint brushes, LOL. I think it was a generational thing. I also remember pine tar, pitch, "gum" and oils for a bunch of different purposes--- liniments, curatives, polish, fleas, insect repellent, moth prevention etc.--- from parents and grandparents.
15.) bluecat - 12/06/2017
More on the pine tar game.

If you ever watch the video of that game, you'll see the umpire lay the bat across the plate as the plate is 18" across. So he was using that as a reference. Did the rule (length of pine tar restriction) come from the width of the plate? I'm guessing yes.

Okay, I think I missed this day in class.

My attempt at humor...fail.
63.) Swamp Fox - 12/08/2017
LOL ...No, I get the basic idea ...I just thought the dates might have had meaning.

The title "A Life Well Lived" is a real poem, but the dates are off, so I thought I must be missing something, like Who's buried in Grant's Tomb?

You get to keep all your points, and I'll shut up now...
64.) bluecat - 12/08/2017
Huh, I was familiar enough with the title of poem but didn't realize there were dates involved. I just made up my dates. Sorry for confusion. Lol.
65.) Swamp Fox - 12/08/2017

The joke's on me. I thought I knew the author, and that's where I came up with the dates. But looking further, I find no connection. As a poem, I find it listed as "Author unknown." There are several books with the title. So why the phrase is in my head, I don't know, now. My guess is I ran across it as a bit of philosophy, pop or otherwise.

Both very good! :tu:

Tommy got a lot more written on his headstone for some reason. I tried to read it, but can't even with a magnifying glass at max zoom. Yes, I tried that, LOL.

I'd love to get info on that cemetery and poor old William Frye. He's a strong contender for a dedication in my first book of poetry, LOL.

At first I thought it might be a military marker, but you'd think there would be more info on the stone. If they had his name, they'd have his rank and unit, conflict, maybe dates, etc.

Then I thought maybe a new headstone for an old or unmarked grave, but couldn't figure out a reason for a city or state marking ("North") in a local graveyard. A North Carolinian buried overseas? Out-of-state? It's the wrong shape and design for a post-war government-issued Confederate marker, and again, lacks information that is usually supplied on a military marker.

Private marker for a stranger who died far from home? That could explain the placement of the marker too close to the tree, LOL. Stranger didn't get the best of care, LOL.
