A friend and member of my deer lease shot a deer of a lifetime last season. Wayne had injured his back and during the spring of 2016, he had back surgery. His therapy and recovery was coming along slowly and by September, he didn't think he'd even be able to hunt. He couldn't walk more than 30 or 40 yards by the season opener and had all but given up on hunting. Slowly, he got his walking stronger and although he couldn't bowhunt, he was focused on getting out during gun season if only for a few hours a day.
Our hunting club uses several elevated box blinds. We had one that was located in a new spot, only 60yds from a main highway and Wayne had me clear a path right from the highway to the box with cat eyes marking the path so he could easily find his way in the dark. Wayne had hunted the spot several times in early November seeing several smaller bucks but nothing he wanted to shoot.
On the shotgun opener in mid November, Wayne got a quick glimpse of this buck but never had time to get a shot off. His adrenaline was through the roof and he thought he'd never see this buck again. A few days later, the buck came back but this time, he came out into the open and gave Wayne the time to get a well placed shot into him at only 90yds. His shot was well placed and the buck dropped within 40 yards of the shot.
A buck in our area that exceeds 150" is a rare sight, one that exceeds 160" is even rarer. This buck scored 167 3/8 gross, 162 1/8" Net. Prior to this buck, Wayne had never shot anything above 120"

Nice! What percentage of Delaware hunters do you think hunt with inline muzzleloaders during shotgun season? If they use shotguns, do you notice one or two favorite rigs?

Swampy, probably 20% or so. The favorite shotgun here is either the Savage 220 slug gun or the H&R ultra slug in 20ga. You'll find one of these in 80-90% of guys hands during shotgun season.

It really does DP, but then you sit in it and realize there aren't allot of marshes in E. Texas

Yeah, you have to go a bit south of here for that. But I'm still struck by how similar the overall appearance is, at least what's visible in that shot.

Not the whole state (SC); just a portion has the August rifle opener. (Southeast, Game Zone 3).

I'm in Game Zone 4 (northeast). Bow starts Aug. 15 and rifle Sept.1 on private land.

Dates are different for WMAs and other public land. I think it's (basically) Sept.15 at the earliest for rifle on most, at least in the eastern part of the state. I think I remember more like October in the western portion when I hunted there, way back. And then it would come in and out and back in again...:re:

Anybody thinking of visiting needs to bear down hard on the regs book. Pretty easy to get tripped up, LOL.

Wow. Corn piles, golf carts, cell phone game cameras, you guys really know how to use your woods knowledge down there.:-)



It is illegal here to use the game cameras that give you a cell phone update, while you're hunting. How they would ever prove it is beyond me, considering I've never seen a warden more than 15 feet from a forest road or parking area.
