1.) Wild Bob - 08/01/2017
So my youngest son wanted his first buck that he got last fall put up a 'horn mount.' Now, I'm either a full shoulder mount, European, or just hack the cap off and mount it on a board kind of guy. Of course he had to want something different.
I'm partial to the Europeans and cap/horn mounts because I can do those easy enough myself. Which was fine that he wanted something different, but if forced me to do one of these; which I'd never done before. I used a kit from Van Dyke's Taxidermy Supply (which now that I've done one, I think I could make more along the lines of exactly what we want by piece-mealing and not going the kit route...but for the first one; it made sense to learn the techniques. I think it came out pretty good, what do you think? 2.) Swamp Fox - 08/01/2017
Very good. I like the dark plaque.
Next time, I know a guy who has a lot of cherry wood if you want some...LOL I'm kind of looking for a cap cover of some type. I like leather more than velvet or felt, but I'm sure it's harder to work with. One of the more interesting things I've seen is a "loose" weave of leather bands maybe 3/8 or 5/16 wide, alternating light and dark. A nice latigo of some single shade would be the bomb, I think. Just need to find a cheap latigo guy now. LOL 3.) luv2bowhunt - 08/01/2017
Looks really good Bob, I like it!

Nice looking plaque. But it's been so long since I've seen any of those long multi-pronged pointy things on it I can't remember what they're called.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
So the Cherry wood is a joke?! Because I am interested in some other wood to use. I've been cutting some elm for firewood lately (perfect activity on these hot ass summer days :re:) and I'm admiring the grain and patterns in that elm. I know it would be a bear to mill...but it would be unique and look pretty neat. RE the cap / cover...stay tuned. I've got what I think will be a really cool idea for that, but I don't want to explain it - I just want to have one to show you what my idea is. I'm thinking of doing it on the whitetail I took last season - then I'll have an example. It's pretty unique and I've searched high and low for some thing similar and have not found anything like it...so if it comes out good... I may be on to something. Also, if it does come out good - I may need to protect it some how before revealing the example! (See Luv2; you can teach an old dog new tricks!! LOL) 7.) bluecat - 08/01/2017
