I've had a few decent bucks coming around lately. There are 3 that hang together and visit plus the momma with her little one. Two of them have some crazy stuff going on which seems to be pretty rampant around me.

That's not the neighbor kid's ladder stand sitting over your feeder, is it? ---LOL
That's not the neighbor kid's ladder stand sitting over your feeder, is it?
HELL NO, he's not too far from there though, maybe only 200yds.
I need to move that ladder, I'll never hunt there and I can use that ladder elsewhere
4.) Swamp Fox - 07/07/2017
I was gonna say: That would be pretty ballsy, LOL.

I wonder if anyone's ever done a deep dive into what exactly causes very local antler characteristics. You'd think that with buck dispersal and all that, you wouldn't really be able to notice some things the way you obviously can. Tall, narrow racks in a certain area come to mind for me.
5.) Jon - 07/07/2017
Even more interesting is that I rarely see the summer bucks once the season starts, they go somewhere else. The bucks I do see in November, there will be a few that have the odd side that has a similar goofiness with multiple tines coming straight up or something like that.
Even more interesting is that I rarely see the summer bucks once the season starts, they go somewhere else.
Same thing here in the big woods. The bucks I get pics of all Summer are entertaining, but they won't show up again in the Fall. The bucks I get pics of in the Fall are often deer I didn't see all Summer.
7.) Swamp Fox - 07/10/2017
You know all those stories about people following deer that they see all the time and even give names to? Are any of those summer deer that anyone can think of? If so, how big an area were these deer watchers watching?
8.) luv2bowhunt - 07/10/2017
To be more specific, MOST of the bucks I get pics of during the Summer disappear come Oct. But there is always one or two that I see during the Fall. I had a ten point a few years back that I was getting pics of right up until rifle season, and then..........

What these celebs are doing on TV, I'm guessing they have the advantage of having enough land, and being able to manage it so that the best habitat for miles, is on their land. AND, they don't have goobers marching around pushing them out of the sanctuary areas they have created for the deer.

Even then, I watch shows and read about how 'their' bucks will disappear for weeks or months, or even sometimes a year or two.
9.) Jon - 07/10/2017
It happens everywhere, even on those 10,000ac ranches BUT on those properties the guides know where they go so they can follow them without any Pa goobers messing things up.
10.) Swamp Fox - 07/10/2017
The Drurys and the Lakoskys are in Iowa, right? They should team up and do a radio collar study to see if their bucks switch off between their properties, or if they stay close to home. Maybe get Bill Winke in on the deal. I think he's out there, too.

I don't make a habit out of naming things I'm going to be eating! LOL!

Jon - looks good, keep us posted on their progress.
14.) Jon - 08/07/2017
I like that squiggly rack buck, I think I'll name him "Squiggly"
15.) Jon - 08/21/2017
Had some of the young ones coming to the salt lick, pretty cool pictures!

He's a good-looking buck.

You have several visitors with potential. :tu:
19.) Jon - 08/23/2017
If I can't get them to show up in the daylight within the next month, I'll never get a chance at them because they will disappear
20.) luv2bowhunt - 08/23/2017
Nice pics Jon.

I've been doing a ton of thinking about buck beds, summer ranges, etc. Do you have any idea where they're bedding now? Also, any idea where they will go in the near future or better yet why?

I don't believe they do much of anything in the early season just random. There must be reasons for what they do. I'm trying to gain more understanding of buck bedding and why they switch areas, or do they really.

I've got big plans for my cameras this Fall. I've found what I'm sure is a buck bedding area, and I am going to plant a camera in there and not check it again until the season is over. Stay tuned.
21.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2017
Bedding area must be fairly close, though. If I were getting midnight pics I'd be depressed.

The camera in a bedding area will be interesting.

I was going to say something slightly similar to the above but got lazy. Acorns dropping will shift them. Human activity and scent in the woods all of a sudden will shift them. I'm not sure there's any biological reason or data for why bucks would "go nocturnal" all of a sudden, but if someone thinks otherwise I'll listen.

The other question/theory I was too lazy to throw out there is that I don't think there's much buck "dispersal" that goes on at 2.5 years old and older. A buck's range might expand but it's not like a doe kicking her 1.5 y/o offspring out of the whole section. Again, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

So summer bucks may be within reach for someone who's not limited to a small hunting area. I realize almost any range expansion knocks most hunters out of the running to hunt "their" summer bucks. On the other hand, there are the new bucks who will move in.

Maybe that shifting around--especially during daylight-- doesn't reach peak volume until much closer to the rut, which is why that period is so much better than the "October lull."

I have a very good idea that they bed across the tax ditch from my property. The very thick woods that isn't hunted until November is between my property and several farms. I'm almost certain that's where they are bedded.
Here's a picture of the area, the red x's is where I believe they bed. The red outlined property is mine.

Thanks Jon. Looks like the southwest corner of your property would be like a funnel for the bucks bedding up there.

On a semi-related note, here is a link to the Penn State deer study about buck ranges. They have found different bucks do different things. Some have a big range, some change from month to month, and some have an incredibly small range year round. Go figure.

26.) Jon - 08/23/2017
Yea, the SW corner is where I have the feeder and where you're seeing these pictures from.
The fields are corn/beans/corn so the deer don't have far to go to get all they need/want.
27.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2017
What's your game plan for getting in there in the mornings?
28.) luv2bowhunt - 08/23/2017
What's your game plan for getting in there in the mornings?
Oh pretty simple. I'll just hide in the woods until I see Jon leave for work, then I'll ease into his stand.
29.) Jon - 08/23/2017
Good plan LUV2, it'll work!
I'm not even sure if I'll hunt it unless I start seeing these bucks on camera during daylight hours. I have so many places to hunt that sometimes I can't make a decision where to go.
30.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2017
That sounds better than what I had...

And I'm a little concerned about those crop circles.

33.) Jon - 08/23/2017
LOL, I hear you and I hope I never don't have the problem!
34.) Swamp Fox - 08/23/2017
LOL...

I have been "lucky" lately in that in one of my places there's no such thing as a predominant wind, and I've had to learn to set up for nearly anything. (Also, even when the wind is supposed to be steady out of one direction, it rarely is, LOL :bang:).

So whatever the wind is supposed to be according to whichever weather service I'm a sucker for that season goes a long way toward narrowing my choices. If I always got and set up for an N, NW or SW wind-- as I got used to through 95% of my hunting career-- I'd have close to the same problem as Jon.

This assumes I actually got a chance to hunt a lot lately...:rage:
