If you've been thinking of getting a good multi-probe digital thermometer for your grill and/or smoker, but didn't want to pay the triple-digit prices the better ones have been commanding...Amazon has a really good short-term deal on the iGrill2 for $69.99 (I suspect they're clearing them out to make way for the iGrill3 that's on its way).
https://www.amazon.com/iDevices-IGR0009CAP5-iGrill-Bluetooth-Thermometer/dp/B0167Q3DTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489092296&sr=8-1&keywords=iDevices+IGR0009CAP5 I have one of these and love it. 2.) Swamp Fox - 03/09/2017
Good info. What's the diff between 2 and 3 (other than 1)?
Keep in mind I thought I was splurging when I upgraded to a digital instant-read for $14.95 I found at Walmart...LOL... These are remote-read, correct? I might pay more if I could get multi-probe readings on my flip phone so I don't have to get up off the couch... 3.) DParker - 03/10/2017
Good info. What's the diff between 2 and 3 (other than 1)?
The iGrill3 is designed as an add-on for Weber's new Genesis II line of grills, which come with mounting locations specifically for the unit as well as a separate battery pack that powers it. In addition to the same 4-probe temperature monitoring capabilities as the iGrill2, the 3 also allows you to control the Genesis II XL model's knob lights remotely. Now...exactly why you'd want to do that, I don't know. Maybe in case you forgot to turn them off and don't want to go back outside at the moment, or something. So, now that I think about it, clearing out the iGrill2 models....which are general-purpose (they come with a magnetic base, so you can stick them to any steel grill/smoker)...for a new model that's meant specifically to be used with Weber's newest pricey grills doesn't make much sense. So maybe Amazon is just feeling generous today.
These are remote-read, correct? I might pay more if I could get multi-probe readings on my flip phone so I don't have to get up off the couch...
Bingo. They're Bluetooth-enabled, and you communicate with them via an app on your mobile device (phone, tablet, whatever). The app has several features, including charts that show each probe's temperature readings over time, alerts when your grill/smoker temp falls outside of a range you can set, alerts when your food reaches your target temp, cooking reference info, etc. For instance... 4.)
Some people want to eat their food and not graph it.
LOL! Yeah, but it's actually a handy feature, especially for the smoker, because it allows me to keep tabs on how stable the ambient temperature is staying, which is useful feedback when evaluating various techniques and what-not. 7.) bluecat - 03/10/2017
I know, I know, I wish I had one. There I said it.
8.) Bob Peck - 03/10/2017
There is an iGrill 2 from iDevices and then Weber acquired iGrill 2. Which product is being offered?
There is a BIG diff between the temp probes. The original iGrill 2 temp probes failed without warning (ruined at least two full briskets) and were prone to inaccurate readings (in other words, they sucked). I replaced at least two sets. Then Weber entered the picture by acquiring iGrill 2 and re-engineered/improved the probes. So far, I've got 1.5 years on the current set which I use on average at least 4-6 times per month. 9.) I'm thinking this is old stock from the pre-Weber era. Notice the difference in the face plate on the product and the difference in price. P.S I simply could not produce the delicious end result without a product like this iGrill2. Slow-n-low happens through consistency of temp and duration both of which this product helps to deliver. I have a few guys who work for me who are Big Green Egg enthusiasts. http://biggreenegg.com/egg-works/ They pledge allegiance that the ultimate smoking experience starts and ends with a controlled charcoal based heat source vs. propane but I'm not spending that kind of money. One guy has an aftermarket product that monitors the meat and ambient temp like the iGrill2 but also has a fan that opens and closes vents when the temp needs to be regulated up and down and turns on a small fan when the coals needs to be stoked. My Camp Chef Smoke Vault smoker is fairly consistent. It takes about 15-20+ minutes of messing around with the propane dial before it settles down for the long haul. 10.) DParker - 03/10/2017

Weber has owned the product long enough now that I just assumed that anything being sold new was their version (the one I got for Christmas is from Weber), and I didn't even think of that. But even the HTTP link I posted (which I didn't pay any attention to) includes "iDevices" as part of the URL, suggesting that you're correct. In light of that.....never mind.
My Camp Chef Smoke Vault smoker is fairly consistent. But filling the water tray has really helped stabilize things. 11.) Swamp Fox - 03/11/2017
Someday someone's gonna come up with an indoor gas or electric smoker that works like a good oven and that women will let in the house, and it will be very scientific and precise so a lot of people will have one, and none of them will be having any fun...

13.) Swamp Fox - 03/11/2017
Speaking of fires, I managed to melt my super-duper Walmart probe last night. Left it in the cooker at about 225 for a while...I just forgot about it while catching up on the Trump Administration between fire-checks, LOL...
While I was getting tired of winning, no bells went off, no flashing lights, no screaming from under the lid...I guess I could have used some remote sensors...:-) 14.) DParker - 03/11/2017

BTW, it appears that probe quality problems transcend corporate boundaries. After 5 months...covering maybe a dozen uses...the ambient temperature probe that came with my Weber-made iGrill2 failed. In spite of never having been immersed in water, exposed to flames or temperatures exceeding 350ºF, never having the cable kinked or otherwise abused, when I plugged it in last week to use when smoking the sous vide short ribs the iGrill2 was unable to get any signal from it at all in any of the 4 ports...save for one brief moment in which I got the 4th port to recognize the probe when I plugged it in, and it promptly read a temperature of 323ºF while sitting on my kitchen counter. I tested all of the ports with the 3 meat probes I have and all worked correctly, so it's definitely the probe. The good news is that after contacting Weber support and supplying them with a laundry list of evidence and other info that they requested (photos of the iGrill2 unit showing no reading from the probe, a screen shot from the phone app showing the same thing, my blood type, credit report, etc) they're sending me a replacement under warranty. It seems like, as common as probe failures are...with pretty much all manufacturers, as far as I can tell, it might be cheaper in the long run to just include a spare with every thermometer from the get-go. 47.) bluecat - 06/06/2017

Weber used to have a digital thermometer with a head that swiveled or rather ratcheted, so it was easy to read at an angle. No more...Or at least no more at Lowe's or Home Depot or wherever I found the original.
