The local cajun joints have boiled crawfish already. The winter in the south must have been even milder than I thought. Well...I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow.

I was trying to scare up some crawfish around here a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of the season. Same sorry news as in the past. The state farmers' market is my last resort, but I'm not driving all the way over there until I know they have them, which is a very hit or miss proposition. I might try to find a phone number on Monday.

Why drive anywhere? I've ordered from these guys for years and never been disappointed.

If you don't have more reasonsble local options that will work, but $4.50-$5.00/lb would be a bit much for me. Being closer to the source our local stores sell them in 20 lb sacks for $3.50- $3.75/lb. But given your and Swampy's distance from LA the extra shipping cost is going to be hard to avoid.

Order some, hold a boil and be the coolest kid on the block!

$5/lb. is actually reasonable compared to what I think I've seen in the past. A few years ago I think I came across some place that was WAY more than that.

But it's still a lot of money for shells and wet grass, LOL. Also, I'd be afraid of getting a lot of little buggers (mudbuggers?) especially this time of year, since that place doesn't sort their crawfish by size. My recollection is that for maybe 10-20% more per pound you can get a sorted sack if you look around.

I think frozen tail meat around here goes for about $12 a pound and I don't think it ever goes on sale.

BTW, the rumor is that there is at least one crawfish farm that's semi-local (i.e., I don't know exactly where it is) but I don't know what their selling radius is. I doubt they ship, but if I find out anything that would help anyone in this general neck of the woods, I'll pass along the 411.

It looks like I'm going to need to switch to doing my own boils exclusively. The local eateries are charging $9.99/lb for boiled crawfish now...which takes the fun out of it. I went ahead and ordered 1 lb last night just to get my fix, but had to get some okra and red beans & rice to fill up on.

Although there's a local brewery tap room that's doing a boil the Saturday after my birthday, so I'll make an exception for that. $25 for a craft brew and all-you-can-eat bugs. At that price I only need to eat 3 lbs to make it a good deal, and if they're at least edible I can eat 3+ lbs standing on my head.

That's how you know you might be a Cajun: when you can eat tree poun' crawfish stan'on yo head...

You know how other people know you're a Cajun, though?

When you can do it and at the same time po' yo pirogue down da buy-o...
