Hate this time of year.
When the outdoor programming is beginning to switch over to fishing shows you know you're in trouble. :groan:
This weekend is the big repack when all the hunting gear is washed, dried and put in space saver bags never to be seen again until September 2017.

A few months ago, I put up a post asking if anyone was interested in a HC rabbit hunt after deer season, and the only person who responded was Luv2.
He wanted to know if we were going to use packhorses, and seemed disappointed in my answer because I never heard from him again...LOL
Also, I suspect the fact that I said we wouldn't be staying at a Bed and Breakfast really put the kibosh on it for him...

Well there is that, but there was no mention of any mints being on the pillow or the sheets being turned down. That's a tough one right there.

Time for Winter scouting, one of my favorite pastimes. It does wonders for beginning the 'anticipation' stage of hunting. I'm checking out some new country this Winter, can't wait to get started.

The State Forest I'm hunting has 83,000 acres and I plan to cover as much of it as I can before I die. Haven't found the perfect spot yet but it's sure fun trying.

Shorts and t-shirt weather the last two days...Somebody had their bass boat out today, which is a little much, considering we never got above freezing Friday night, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and into Tuesday.
The car washes are doing a crazy business today...It's like people think winter is over, LOL. We're just getting started. Cold front comes through tomorrow and it'll be time to break out the big coats again.

And that's why you're a legend on here.:tu: I tip my cap to you and the awesome bucks you always kill. No doubt about it, if you've got the right land, the right setup, and aren't covered up with other hunters, you can have a great spot year after year. I know a bunch of guys who bow hunt right behind or in between houses, because that's where the deer are and they have success nearly every season. Just like Jon is going to do at his place. No doubt about it, he can have success around his place year in and year out. I've hunted in between the houses here before and I just don't like it as much.
For me there's something more to the experience that satisfies. I've always had this urge to get back in, see what's over the next hill, check out that remote mountain laurel covered bench, or venture into the hollow filled with rhododendron. For me, there's this certain wonder-lust about hunting new areas, especially if I know there's no one around for miles. That just does something for me that I can't explain. I've got a couple stands I hunt just for the view, knowing full well I've got a slim chance of even seeing a deer there.
If it was just about killing a buck, I would be a complete failure most years that's for sure.:-)

Luv, that's a great plan. I always love to hunt new places, like Christmas morning at every sit.
Strangely enough, I didn't hunt my place even once this year. I'm enjoying the deer in the yard and watching them grow up, that and the fact that something changed from last year and ZERO bucks during daylight on camera.
I'm trying to figure out why things changed.
Do us all a favor, take a picture at each new place. Wear those fancy cowboy boots and a pair of skinny jeans, that and a nice sultry smile.......

I'm not a buck hunter. I'm a meat hunter. This is not to be confused with the brown-it's-down crowd or a challenge to those that are buck hunters. Whatever legally floats your boat is just fine with me.
Age and nearly 50 years of hunting has me in a place today where I am discriminating and usually pass on young bucks that look to have a promising future but not always. Sometimes my prefrontal cortex takes over and the shot is on. This seems to happen when the angle, elevation and environmental conditions match what I've practiced. When the practice shot matches matches the visual field in front of me I seem to go on autopilot.
My technique for hunting new land starts with staring at Google Earth for hours and hours. Between the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests I have 1.8 million acres basically out my back door. Even if I'm hunting with one of you I hit Google Earth to familiarize myself.
Moving the cursor across the Google Earth image gives me GPS coordinates. When I find something promising I make a record of it, add a degree of difficulty based on elevation, trajectory to the location and anticipated time in and out or in some cases whether or not an overnight stay might be required. I log these places.
Some of the destinations are more about the hunt happening in between the access and the egress rather than reaching the destination expecting to have game waiting for me. I rely heavily on locals who may have been where I'm thinking of going. Some options are logged just because they're weird looking or interesting from the satellite images. I found a small completely overgrown lake this summer that had game trails to it but zero human sign. That excursion was definitely waaay off the beaten path. These kind of hunts are more about the navigation and survival challenge than meat. If it happens, it happens. I limit these excursions to 5 per year. I'm not in good enough shape to do more than this.
"Everyday hunting"? I hunt the same property I've hunted for the last 10 years. It's a comfortable 78 acres 20 minutes from my house I know like the wrinkles in my face. This year the Lord blessed my many, many hours of effort with five deer. I kept one and donated 4.
The 1.8 million acres mentioned above? Exactly 1 "no-brainer" 18 yard blown shot opportunity on a broadside buck totally unaware of my presence but a ton of black bear interactions and a face-to-face 1st time encounter with a bobcat.
