THE technology thread for 2017 and beyond.

Because I love mega-threads so much, I will generously offer everyone the opportunity to toss in any of your own tech nightmares right here as well, be they real or imagined, so you don't have to go through the inconvenience of creating your own new threads if you're not up to it.

Also, you don't have to limit it to technology. I don't want to develop a Post Prevention Department around here, LOL.

Maybe you tried to build something with wood and nails. How'd that turn out? :p

The "Voice Purchasing" option on your Alexa account provides for a PIN you can create, and which must be spoken to verify anything ordered through your Echo/Dot/other Alexa device. So mom either didn't enable that, or the little offender who "accidentally" bought this stuff became privy to it.

https://www.komando.com/tips/379259/amazon-alexa-vs-google-home-and-how-theyre-always-listening
There's been a lot of hysteria/paranoia over this lately, especially following the recent murder investigation in AR in which the Bentonville PD obtained a (completely worthless) search warrant from a local court for any/all recordings from the suspect's Echo that may have been uploade to Amazon's servers. (Amazon has told the Bentonville PD to go pound sand, citing customer privacy and the non-binding nature of the warrant from a different state.) But while I understand the concern it is ultimately much ado about nothing. The Echo/Dot maintain an internal buffer of the most recent 60 seconds of audio data...data goes absolutely nowhere unless/until the "wake word" you've selected is spoken. At that point the light ring on the device glows bright blue, letting you know that you've activated the device's command mode, and whatever brief audio follows the wake word is then uploaded to Amazon servers for analysis and, if said servers can make heads or tails of what you've said, acting upon. There is no surreptitious eavesdropping or data collection going on. And that's not just taking Amazon's word for it. This is all easily verifiable using network sniffers and other analysis tools...which has been done to death.

Now, if you'll excuse me, there is a black helicopter hovering over my backyard and a group of rather loud and insistent gentlemen knocking on my door....

HAD THE ECHO AND TOOK IT BACK FOR THE GOOGLE. GOOGLE WAS/IS MUCH SMARTER AND LESS FRUSTRATING. HOWEVER.... AND I KNOW IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME, BUT "CALL 911" WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST ITEM I WOULD HAVE PROGRAMMED INTO EITHER. AS WELL AS CHARGING USB PORTS.

IN TIME, THESE THINGS WILL BE CRAZY SMART AND WITH MANY MORE FUNCTIONS AND ASSOCIATED APPS.
HAD THE ECHO AND TOOK IT BACK FOR THE GOOGLE.
Uh, oh. This could get uglier than beans/no beans.
"CALL 911" WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST ITEM I WOULD HAVE PROGRAMMED INTO EITHER
There have been plenty of people calling for that, but there are a lot of problems with trying to turn either into a telephony device...both technical and legal.
13.) DParker - 01/04/2017
Speaking of "what could go wrong", I needed to replace the deadbolt on my front door last month...so I seized the opportunity (and a killer sale from Home Depot) to add more tech for its own sake and replaced all of the hardware with this Z-Wave deadbolt setup from Schlage:

Next, a video and audio-recording WiFi doorbell.

Now...where's my flying car?!
14.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2017
I can honestly say that if you lock yourself out of your house and your tech support is with AT&T/Directv, you might as well just burn the place down and call a realtor.

What prevents someone from unscrewing, smashing or otherwise disabling one of those wi-fi doorbells?
15.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2017
Didn't realize you couldn't call 911 with one of these things.

I really AM going to be forced to buy one of those med-alert fobs, hopefully one that also yells, "Intruder, leave the premises immediately!" and alternates that with ""Mabel, what did you do with my shotgun?!"
16.) DParker - 01/04/2017
What prevents someone from unscrewing, smashing or otherwise disabling one of those wi-fi doorbells?
The fact that they'd be recorded in the act. Other than that? Nothing more than what prevents anyone from smashing/disabling anything else outside.

IT WONT BE LONG. HELL YOU CAN CHROMECAST TO YOUR TV WITH IT. REMEMBER, GOOGLE HAS A MUCH BIGGER DATABASE THAN AMAZON BUT GOOGLE HAS ONLY BEEN OUT SINCE OCTOBER. There's no question about that. I mean, it's Google, after all. There are also some other extra goodies that GH sports that are currently missing from Alexa's functional quiver. But Alexa still has the edge in areas like home automation integration and 3rd party "skills" support. You can also get the Dot for $50 (less during occasuonal promos, or if you buy them 6 at a time). That's a real plus when you're outfitting your home with multiple units so you can use them from just about any room (and a lot of people do this). It also makes them more attractive to give as gifts.

I used to watch that religiously, thanks for posting. That was one funny show.
29.) Swamp Fox - 01/05/2017
There's a pretty funny video out there where a little kid (under 6) asks Alexa to play a particular song (which I don't recognize since I am not in the 4-to-34 music demographic) and somehow Alexa thinks he's asking about porn. Needless to say, hilarity ensues.

Apparently it's not staged. Not sure how high on the NSFW scale it rates since I didn't have time to watch the whole thing, but the parents' quick reaction is chuckle-worthy...or at least I thought so.

Question is, can you get a mfn bambulance this way?
According to ABC News, officers were called to a home outside Albuquerque, New Mexico this week when a smart device called 911 and the operator heard a confrontation in the background. Police say that Eduardo Barros was house-sitting at the residence with his girlfriend and their daughter. Barros allegedly pulled a gun on his girlfriend when they got into an argument and asked her: “Did you call the sheriffs?” A smart device in the home apparently heard “call the sheriffs,” and proceeded to call the sheriffs.

A SWAT team arrived at the home and after negotiating for hours, they were able to take Barros into custody. Police tell ABC News that the man’s girlfriend was injured but did not need to visit a hospital. The couple’s daughter was safe and unharmed.

“The unexpected use of this new technology to contact emergency services has possibly helped save a life,” Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III said in a statement.

...

While smart home technology is the hero in the case, it will certainly leave some people uneasy. It’s a clear reminder that smart home devices are always listening. We don’t know what data, if any, was recorded by the Amazon Echo that was involved in the December murder case. But police felt confident enough that it may have recorded audio of the incident to seek a warrant.

In a different incident in January, a local TV news broadcast involving a dollhouse reportedly triggered multiple Amazon Echo devices in the area to start ordering dollhouses. It’s easy to imagine police getting tired of being called to citizen’s homes every time they watch the latest episode of Law and Order.

I believe this one is going to end up being something of an urban myth. None of the current speech recognition products work that way...and the Echo/Alexa (which is the one that ABC News is claiming was the dialer) isn't capable of placing phone calls.
39.) bluecat - 07/12/2017
Surely it isn't fake news.
40.) Swamp Fox - 07/12/2017
Good catch...Although the victim thinks she used Alexa. Very strange.

BTW, this Sheriff Gonzalez might be on commission. He mentions the technology potentially saving a life every chance he gets, LOL
"This question, based on the victim's statements, prompted a smart-home device known as Alexa to contact law enforcement," Gonzales said in a statement. "In the 911 call, the victim can be heard yelling 'Alexa, call 911.'"

Gonzalez said his office has received questions regarding the specific device used to call 911. He said that, based on the victim’s statements and 911 recording, it was assumed that Alexa technology the [sic] made the call. Amazon's Alexa, however, does not support 911 calls, Amazon spokeswoman Rachel Hass told USA TODAY.

41.) Swamp Fox - 07/12/2017
I'll be very disappointed in journalism if the victim called 911 herself and ALSO yelled at Alexa, because any victim's call to 911 hasn't ever been mentioned ever since this story broke, that I know of.

But doesn't it sound like she made a call herself, from the above?

Yeah, I can tell you with absolutely zero doubt that this version of events is completely bogus...even ignoring the obvious problem with the sheriff basing his conclusion on hearing the victim saying, "Alexa, call 911" during the 911 call (if he heard that on the recorded call, that means the call was already in progress when she allegedly said it.) The Echo (or any of the other devices in that line) and the Alexa service simply don't have that capability, and aren't likely to anytime soon. You can just imagine the potential liability nightmare that would create for Amazon.

And so far I haven't seen any actual statements by the victim saying that it was an Echo device that initiated the call. All I've read are assumptions/conclusions from the sheriff to that effect. I'm open to being proven wrong on this, but so far it just sounds like a conclusion that was jumped to by a law enforcement guy who doesn't know anything about the technology involved, and was lapped up and regurgitated by lazy journalists because it's a really good story.
