1.) Swamp Fox - 01/01/2017
Been thinking about starting to use one for a while now but we've just hit critical mass. Have been asked to reset my Yahoo password probably three times in four months. One time might have been my fault because I could have forgotten a decently memorable pw and just gave up to get a new one. But the other times it's been an issue at Yahoo.
A couple of other sites seem to be making my password life more difficult, as well. (Archery Talk is one. If you haven't been over there in a while you might want to check to see if they've deep-sixed your favorite secret code without you knowing it.) So, I've reached the point where I have too many passwords to keep up with. Who wants to give me the pros and cons and possibly a service provider recommendation so I can store my passwords without having to remember them, or write them down somewhere that I'll never have access to if I need it? 2.) I just keep mine (which currently number 38, and growing) in a password-protected note-taking app on my phone. There are several good ones, but Diaro is what I use.

So you don't bother with anything that stores passwords in the cloud or some other delusional place so that they can automatically be entered for you as you visit various sites? I thought that was the whole point of these services.

It is. But the paranoid part of me doesn't think the convenience is worth giving such a service the keys to all of my online accounts. If I forget a password it's because the site account I'm logging onto is one that I don't access that frequently, so grabbing my phone and unlocking the notes app (using a fingerprint, BTW) once in a while is not enough of a bother to do anything about. 5.) I don't want to assume you do or don't have a different password for each site, but I have a dozen or so places I have to access regularly and then others that are regular but only occasional if you know what I mean. I don't know if that's unusual of not, but any more than two passwords in that scenario is a burden I'd like to avoid, LOL.
I might have to break down and just make a comprehensive list in one place, as you do. Right now when I do write them down, they're spread between phone notes, legal pads, spiral notebooks, Post-Its, and my PalmPilot...LOL 6.) DParker - 01/01/2017
Well, just collecting them together in one place (with a backup copy somewhere, of course) will get you past most of the problem.

Well, I should just get serious about doing that, I guess. I've been put off by the manager services by my usual prejudices.
I wonder if there is some actual real dirt on them, though, to support our paranoia. Have you heard anything? 8.) DParker - 01/01/2017

No, and my concerns may well be unfounded. But given their marginal extra value (for me) compared with what I'm doing now it just isn't worth the uncertainty to me. As always though, YMMV. |
