South Carolina (6-6) is playing University of South Florida (ranked 22, I think) in the Birmingham Bowl. No idea how that happened. Gamecock alum on the selection committee, maybe.

Until Papa John's hit the big-time with the NFL, the Birmingham Bowl used to be the PapaJohn's.com Bowl. So I'm not sure if this is a step up, or a step down.

Birmingham's a fun town, probably, if you'd like a place nicknamed "The Pittsburgh of the South," and which advertises itself as "The Diverse City."

At least it's not "The Paris of the South." :re:

So I hope everyone in Birmingham enjoys themselves, but not in a regionally distinct or politically incorrect way.

The Tar Heels play Stanford in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. Not sure if there are any American car companies interested in American college football. Apparently not at a sponsorship level, anyway.

Toyota should get in on the action if Americans won't. I mean, don't let the South Koreans dominate. The ancestors are spinning in their graves.

I think the Toyota Prius Snowflake Bowl would go over big with American colleges.

Let's try that next, when some genius eventually decides we're cheating ourselves with only 40 bowl games.

http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/player-suspended-belk-bowl-shoplifting-belk-44465795

Arkansas senior tight end Jeremy Sprinkle was suspended from the Belk Bowl game Thursday night against No. 18 Virginia Tech after police accused him of shoplifting from the department store that sponsors the game.

Sprinkle was charged by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police with shoplifting by concealment Tuesday at the Belk department store and was released.

As a perk of the game, Belk gave players on both teams a $450 gift card to one of their department stores and 90 minutes to spend it. The police report indicates that Sprinkle shoplifted $260 worth of merchandise.

Razorbacks coach Bret Bielema announced the decision to suspend Sprinkle about two hours before the game.

"Jeremy's suspension has been known by our staff and players for several days so we've had a chance to prepare our game plan accordingly," Bielema said in a statement. "Throughout his career and this season as a graduate student-athlete, Jeremy has displayed numerous times the qualities we want to represent our program."

Sprinkle had 33 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns and is projected as one of the top 10 tight ends available in next year's NFL draft.

LINCOLN — Nebraska’s patchwork quilt of a football team for the Music City Bowl needs even more mending after coach Mike Riley’s Thursday announcement that senior captain and safety Nate Gerry was suspended for the game because the university ruled him ineligible.

In a message posted on Twitter, Gerry wrote: “I did not fulfill my academic responsibilities this semester and I want to apologize to my teammates and to Husker Nation.

It might be a little awkward watching that bowl with his family.

LOL...I'd like to see the powers that be move night games to 7 PM Eastern starts, and/or eliminate some TV time-outs (make the advertising producers work harder: okay by me) and tweak some other things to shorten the total package run time by half an hour. More precious advertising space means increased rates, justified by better primetime viewing and larger, happier audiences (or at least an audience that is not declining, as it is in the NFL). Win-win.

The 8 or later starts plus a 3.5- or 4-hour game is a bear when you have to work the next day. Moving things an hour earlier isn't going to kill anyone.

And another thing: play major night games--whatever the sport--on Saturdays, not Sundays. Fans take off and travel to the location on Fridays anyway, and then they go back home on Monday after they've decompressed. Don't make the rest of us poor schlubs who watch at home putz around in anticipation all day Saturday and then have to turn off party-mode at some weird point on Sunday because we have to be at work bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the next day. Because some of us can do that but only with great suffering, while others call in sick and the rest show up late and are pretty worthless the whole day. Maybe a short burst of energy right before it's time to go home, LOL.

Pittsburgh was 22. I thought for a second VT was 22...Wrong about that, too.

Hokies, Bulls...same diff, right?

No...Wait. That was mean.

Apologies to the Bulls....LOL

The USC-USF game turned out to be a good one with a strong fourth-quarter comeback by the Gamecocks, and a heart-breaker overtime.

They played in the middle of the afternoon, though, and I caught it last night. The stadium looked half-empty. Birmingham seems to like hosting it, though.

LOL...

Sounds like we missed a good VT-Arkansas game. Or at least an epic collapse and commensurate comeback.

Also: Stay classy, Razorbacks:
With Arkansas leading 24-7, wide receiver Drew Morgan caught a 74-yard pass from Allen in the third quarter, but then fumbled at the 1 and the ball rolled out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. However, the Razorbacks were bailed out because Virginia Tech was called for illegal hands to the face, giving them a first down — although 65 yards back down the field. But the fumble still proved costly as the Razorbacks would have to punt the ball away four plays later.

Morgan was ejected later in the game for unsportsmanlike conduct when he spit in the face of an opponent.

“That is very embarrassing as a head coach,” Bielema said. “I don’t want Drew to be remembered for that. When you act out of character, you get out of character results.”
Nebraska Football: Five Reasons The Huskers Will Lose to Tennessee In The Music City Bowl

Let me get right to the point.

Do you, Husker fan, have a lot of confidence in a Nebraska win in this bowl game?

I’m guessing probably not. That 40-10 drubbing at the hands of those stinky Iowegians took a lot of life out of this season - I’m also guessing many of you are ready to get 2016 over with and move on to the offseason.

NOT SO FAST, you lying bastards!

You know as well as I that if Nebraska loses this game you’ll be bitching about it all through the offseason, so stop pretending you don’t care. We want this season ending on a positive note.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be tough. Here’s why.

(1) No Tommy Armstrong
I sent out this tweet around the end of the Nebraska - Iowa game this season. It got a fair amount of likes and a lot of retweets. Obviously a lot of other people feel the same way.

If Tommy doesn’t play in this game (and it looks like he won’t), he will finish his career at Nebraska as the #1 all-time passer with 8,871 yards, #1 in completions with 625, #1 in total offense with 10,690 yards, #1 in total touchdowns with 91, and #1 in career starts with 44.

That’s quite the Nebraska career.

You know what’s worse than having Armstrong at quarterback?

Not having Armstrong at quarterback when your only other real option is a walk-on quarterback who’s played little and broke his wrist in November. Not having Armstrong will limit Nebraska’s run game because the opposing defense will have no fear of Ryker Fyfe’s running ability as a quarterback.

You might be ready to be done with Tommy, but you have to admit that over his career he’s shown incredible grit and determination. Will this team play that way without him? Will they play that way with Fyfe leading the way behind center? Will Fyfe make plays while protecting the ball?

Will you bet money on it?

(2) No Nate Gerry
Nate Gerry is another guy who has driven me crazy. An excellent defender, but Gerry will begin this season just as he started it - not playing. That’s not very captain-like, is it?

Gerry could make some great plays, but at the same time, be the dumbest guy on the defense. Remember the running into the kicker penalty against Iowa? Pretty dumb. Despite the downside, Gerry is the leading solo tackler (47) and second overall (74). He’s second in pass breakups (8), and second in interceptions (4).

Gerry will be missed.

(3) No Jordan Westerkamp
As uneven as Armstrong and Gerry have been, Jordan Westerkamp has been the exact opposite. Westerkamp finishes his career one reception short (36) of Johnny Rodger’s record of consecutive games with a reception (37). He’s second (167) behind Kenny Bell (181) in all-time receptions. He’s fourth in career receiving yardage (2,474), and only six yards from the #2 spot. Six friggin’ yards and he’d pass Nate Swift (,2476) and Johnny Rodgers (2,479)*.

Nebraska won’t miss Westerkamp because of his records. They’ll miss him because he always caught the ball. If you needed a first down, throw it to Westerkamp. If the game is desperate, throw it to Westerkamp. If you want an ESPN highlight, throw it to Westerkamp and watch him make the catch between his legs while flipping in midair.

(4) Tennessee’s Offense - The Run Game
I am confident that Nebraska’s secondary can cover Volunteer receivers. I believe I’m safe in saying that Mark Banker will be confident that Nebraska’s secondary can cover as well. That’s why the Husker defense will stack and try to force Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs to throw.

Nebraska must be successful in stopping the run early for this to be successful. If there’s a weakness in this approach, it’s in Tennessee runs to the outside - that the Vols are faster in that regard, and once they get past the initial set of defenders they will be off to the races.

(5) Nebraska’s Special Teams - Forgotten?
Nebraska’s special teams were so bad this season that Bruce Read was fired before getting a chance to coach in the bowl game. Since then... what’s going on with special teams? Will someone teach protection recognition when the Huskers are punting so that Caleb Lightbourn doesn’t get a fourth punt blocked this season?

Will someone block for Demornay Pierson-El on a punt return, or will he look up to see eight guys running at him full speed like he has most of the season?

Did anyone coach up special teams between the end of the season and the bowl game, or did they just forget?

(6) Home State Advantage?
Football, more than any other sport, can be summed up with this statement:

Whoever Plays The Hardest The Longest Wins

This applies to bowl games much more than the regular season; when it comes to bowl games hopes and desires may be dashed leaving many players to conclude there’s nothing left to play for.

Most bowl games are about desire. So who’s really going to have more desire to win, Nebraska, or a team playing in their own home state?
18.) bluecat - 12/30/2016
Okay, there are six reasons the Huskers will lose...LOL!
19.) bluecat - 12/30/2016

Stanford's Christian McCaffrey skipped the Sun Bowl, LSU star skipping his bowl game, too...."To get ready for the NFL draft."

I have no idea what you have to do to "get ready" for the NFL draft that you can't take a couple of days of travel and one game day away from, especially over Christmas vacation. It's nonsense. Your agent can wait. It's about avoiding the risk of injury. A risk which every other one of your teammates faces, whether he has NFL prospects or not.

Who wants to risk millions of dollars to play an exhibition game that doesn't mean anything in a half-empty stadium? I get it.

But it's still a punk move.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/pac12/2016/12/19/stanford-christian-mccaffrey-wont-play-in-sun-bowl/95606046/
28.) bluecat - 12/30/2016
I'm sure his teammates are very understanding...

Delta Bravo
29.) Swamp Fox - 12/30/2016
Well, the story is that he asked his teammates' permission to skate. They supported him. Which means either they think little of the Tar Heels and dismiss the possibility of a loss, or that they think little of the bowl and the fans.

Either way, it's unsportsmanlike all around. Especially since I'm also guessing that no one thought about the risk the guy who has to replace him is now forced to take.

The way I look at it is that if you don't REALLY want to play for a team, you shouldn't pursue a team sport. Take up golf, or body-building.

But not fishing, please. There are enough self-absorbed people on the water as it is...LOL

Side note: Stanford just this minute lost their starting quarterback to a knee injury carrying the ball on a running play McCaffrey could have been helping them with. As I was typing this post. (I'm watching on a delay, so "just" means I just saw it.)

Good job, brother! :re:
30.) Swamp Fox - 12/30/2016
Hey, CE!

Stanford has a really cute redhead cheerleader! Female even.

CBS...LOL
31.) Swamp Fox - 12/31/2016
That was a good game. Stanford almost blew it. Tar Heels hurt themselves and probably could have won it, especially playing a team without its star and its starting quarterback. A very respectable showing from the ACC so far, for a basketball conference.

Enjoyed the Nebraska-Tennessee game. Nebraska seemed a little flat. Maybe they're always like that. (?---LOL)

Tennessee broke out the very sharp Smoky Gray uniforms again, which was smart after blowing it against SC and Vanderbilt to end their season in traditional orange and white. Vanderbilt! I mean, c'mon! LOL
32.) Swamp Fox - 12/31/2016
The number of broadcasters supporting players sitting out bowl games to protect their future financial interests surprises me in some ways, and doesn't in others. I've come to the conclusion over the years that sports journalists, color guys and play-by-play callers are generally very averse to saying anything that goes against the herd.

Apparently the herd thinks it's okay to ditch your teammates if it's a bowl game, or big money is involved.

If anyone can point me to any on-air commentary that takes the opposite position, I'd be grateful for the tip.
33.) bluecat - 12/31/2016
I've been thinking about this since your post yesterday revealing Christian not playing. It isn't the Stanfield Christians. What if someone didn't play in the final four for the same reason? Its a selfish d-bag move.
34.) Swamp Fox - 12/31/2016
I think it would be even worse if it were the Final Four. At least then the teammates who have to take up the slack could complain that a National Championship could be on the line.

I'll bet if players knew or thought that these bowl games "mean something," they wouldn't be quite so quick to bug out, or support bugging out. That tells you something about most of these bowl games, and about the players who would consider ducking any game.

These contests are for the team, for the school, and for the fans, in roughly that order. They're not for individual aggrandizement. Somehow that seems to have escaped these bench-riding athletes, and every on-air commentator I've heard so far.

If as a pro prospect you think you've been used by your university for your talents--and now it's your time to cash in by sitting out and protecting yourself--refund The U your scholarship money, ride off into the sunset on your high horse, and good luck to you.

+++

Again, if anyone is aware of anyone who has taken a similar position on air, please let me know. So far I'm blanking on the games I've watched.

Or, let me know if you disagree with me...LOL...

I did hear Kirk Herbstreit say that he understood why Christian did it but that you can get injured doing anything. So I take that as a little more leaning to the opposing side without being overt.
45.) bluecat - 01/04/2017
I also heard Brent Musburger wish Joe Mixon well in his career in the future. I guess he got a lot of tweets for that because he came back a short time later and had to explain to all those easily offended that he didn't condone what he did (Joe) but you can still hope someone turns their life around and has a successful future.

Without making social commentary, I'll just say it's too bad Brent felt like he to justify wishing someone well.
46.) bluecat - 01/04/2017
I don't know how you can look your teammates in the face and say, I'm going to skip out on OUR bowl to get ready for the combines.
47.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2017
Correctomundo on Musberger and skipping out.

Thanks for the reference to Herbstreit.

I was thinking I might have to go looking for studio analysis to find anything, which I don't usually watch. Did he say it during game broadcast, or on a panel? Do you remember during which game? (I haven't gotten around to watching one or two of them.)

I think this is going to become a hotter and hotter topic as time goes on. I know more than a handful of pro athletes have criticized the decision to sit out, but the vast majority of writers and pundits that I've seen--plus the bulk of the fans I've read in comments sections---are quite flagrant in their cheerleading for the money.

It almost forces you to dismiss anything they have to say in the future about "love of the game" or "teamwork" or "passion" or "heart" or any of that old hokum.

On a side note, I haven't seen any of those people bring up Loss of Value insurance, which is becoming more common for pro prospects. I guess it's easier to boo-hoo about poor helpless little cogs in the machine than bother with pesky details or intangibles or complications to the narrative.

The same people who are now saying, "It's just a game and doesn't mean anything compared to a dollar in your pocket" will be back next year blowing smoke up our skirts about getting pumped for another fantastic season of smash-mouth college football, and what it all means to the nation.

I'm a little baffled so many are taking this stance of it being okay to leave.
49.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2017
Okay. I missed it somehow. Must have snuck it in there all quiet-like.

It's not like I spent most of my time the last seven days reading about college football, but the comment sections I have read must be at least 10-1 in favor of players skipping bowl games.

I'd love to see where there is any kind of spirited, halfway intelligent debate of this going on where the odds aren't quite that bad.
50.) bluecat - 01/04/2017
I've heard that it is not okay that a coach leaves his team just before a bowl to take on a new position with another team. How is that any different?
51.) Swamp Fox - 01/04/2017
I agree. Steve Spurrier would have been crucified for leaving South Carolina in the lurch the way he did, except that he was so well-liked. I think he also would have gotten more grief if it all hadn't been so mysterious. (I still don't know the story. I quit paying attention after a couple of weeks of no info, so I could have missed it.) I can think of many more coaches who DID get the mob treatment, though.

I would think bowl committees would want to put a plug in this before it gets out of hand. Fans around the country want to watch star players that they might not otherwise see in the course of a season. If fans already think that most bowl games are completely meaningless, how are they going to feel when everyone with a shot at the pros decides it's not worth playing in them?

It's a death spiral.

Speaking of death spirals, let's keep Retirement Obama far, far away from this. I know he thinks he's DeeJay Insurance and Grandmaster Healthcare, but he's already screwed up those two markets, so I hope we've learned something. The man can't even make an unopposed jumpshot from the paint. Don't anybody tell him there's a problem with college football.

Exactly, I have exactly 0.00 interest in Stanford football. However, I would probably watch that game knowing that he might play.

The layup was the most disturbing part of that video. We all know he has no game. But a layup?

I know, right?

My favorite part is when he asks for a new ball about 10 bricks in... :re:

Well, besides the part where he leaves the court at the end...
