I went out with a friend and got our limit this AM!

2.) DParker - 12/28/2016
Frozen hammer handles! The year I spent in Milwaukee I desperately wanted to try ice fishing, but that year's winter ended up as the warmest they'd experienced in a decade, and none of the local lakes froze up enough to safely venture out on to.

That's an interesting looking lure you're using there. It looks like a submarine's towed sonar array.
3.) bluecat - 12/28/2016
Nice job. So...are you stabbing them to get them out of the hole after you've caught them or are you stabbing them when they get close to lure?
4.) Swamp Fox - 12/28/2016
Brrrrrr....

But they look tasty, LOL.

For some reason I've seen a few of "ice fishing" combos in the big stores around here the last couple of years. I guess somebody in this neck of the woods might plan a trip to the land of the ice and snow, to the midnight sun where the hot springs flow...But I can't imagine many. Always surprises me when I see these rigs.

Unless people are using them for something else and I just don't know about it. Maybe catching shad for stripers or catfish bait. I guess that might make sense, if you can't use a cast net, or don't want to. Hmmm...

Spearing them as they come look at the decoy
6.) bluecat - 12/28/2016
Interesting, so how far below the surface is the decoy and do you have a line attached to the gigger?
7.) Swamp Fox - 12/28/2016
Is there a special season or some other benefit to that technique? Why not hook and line?
8.) bow-fishhunter - 12/29/2016

because its fun
9.) Swamp Fox - 12/29/2016
No knot-tying or pesky line changes, either, I guess...LOL. :tu:
10.) Swamp Fox - 12/29/2016
When Crookedeye sees this, he's gonna get all excited about frog gigging again...
11.) bluecat - 12/29/2016
He'll be in when NU plays Tennessee on the 30th.
12.) Swamp Fox - 12/29/2016
It's a good thing I don't follow the bowl-picking process, because trying to understand how those two teams got the Music City Bowl would be driving me nuts. I mean, I'm sure it's a prestigious bowl and all...:re:

I think I heard 25% of the teams in bowls this year have losing records.

Stop the insanity!
13.) DParker - 12/29/2016
No knot-tying or pesky line changes, either, I guess...LOL. :tu:
Yeah, I'd imagine that tying knots in fishing line can be more than a bit challenging when your fingers are on the verge of frost bite.
14.) bluecat - 12/29/2016
The "Poulan Weed Eater, Popeyes, Home Depot, Hertz, National, Goodyear, Outback, Chick-Fil-A,TaxSlayer, Gildan, R+L Carriers We Feel Sorry For You Bowl".

Bowls should be about fruit, should be on January 1, should start in the morning and end with the national championship game in the evening. There, I said it and I'm proud of it.
15.) bow-fishhunter - 12/29/2016
Yeah, I'd imagine that tying knots in fishing line can be more than a bit challenging when your fingers are on the verge of frost bite.
Quick snaps my man quick snaps and spearing you're in a dark house and it's 70 degrees.

I rarely fish outside. most of the time it gets uncomfortably warm in the fish houses.

I notice a lot of times when you see something on the internet about ice fishing, it involves bikini models in fur boots, so that must have something to do with it, too.

:-)
because its fun
I've ice-fished my brains out during my youth and since my parents owned a cottage on the Rideau chain of lakes in Canada (Bob's Lake to be precise) I must say I miss this. The ice shack towed onto the frozen lake, drinking my face off, napping in a cozy makeshift bed, occasionally tossing in wood to the small wood stove and oh what?! There's a fish on the line?

At first I thought you were bowfishing. I have never experienced spearing the fish so I have many questions ... is the square hole to allow for better shot angles? Why aren't the target fish more skittish? How deep was the water? Looks shallow. How heavily weighted is the spear? What other species come in? Walleye? Perch? What's on the bottom of the hole? Looks like it could either be fish food or gravel. How is it that the fish aren't faster than you or don't detect the motion of a massive spear coming at them? Are they blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce
Another runner in the night?

O.K I'll stop now.

Well, there goes my manly-man-against-the-elements view of ice fishing. Can you get pizza delivery too? :wink

Yet another reason to lament that extra warm Wisconsin winter those many years ago.
And nary a Johnson to be tugged on.

so you can fit adjust to hit the fish and see down the hole
Why aren't the target fish more skittish?
The house is completely dark so you can see down the hole and the fish can't see through the hole
How deep was the water? Looks shallow.
where we went is 10ish feet
How heavily weighted is the spear?
It's a 5ft steel spear maybe 10lbs
What other species come in? Walleye? Perch?
other species come in but you can only spear rough fish and northerns you can have a line down the hole too.
How is it that the fish aren't faster than you or don't detect the motion of a massive spear coming at them? Are they blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night?
