1.) Triton Rich - 11/27/2016
[B]My daughter has been crossbow hunting the past couple of years with no chances to take a shot. She had been limited to winter hunting and there just hasn't been anything happening. Well, last year they changed the regs and now a youth hunter can use a crossbow for the whole archery season. We've hunted a handful of times with a number of deer around and one chance at a doe that we had to pass as she was quartering to us too much. On Friday we were back in the double ladder stand once again. Nothing happened for most of the time, we even dozed a little. Just before closing we finally had a couple of deer approaching. It appeared to be a doe and a fawn so we got ready to shoot the larger deer. There was only a few minutes left but she was able to see the deer in the scope. I reminded her to squeeze the trigger and she took aim and fired. The arrow hit low and well towards the front and the deer stumbled badly before running off. It went about 90 yards and stopped running then I lost sight of it. I felt good about the shot but it was obvious that she hit bone so we backed out and went to dinner. After an hour, we took up the trail. We were trailing in grass (the neighbor's lawn really) and were not finding any blood. I shined my flashlight in the direction the deer went and saw a suspicious lump, there it was! It turns out it was a buck fawn but that's fine. She hit him low just above the upper leg bone through the heart and broke the upper leg on the far side. We are both thrilled that she got a deer. She says next time, she's holding out for a big buck. That's my girl! [/B]

My story isn't nearly as interesting but it's appropriate.
This past weekend out of the blue daughter #1 makes up her mind after 26 years that she wants to go hunting with me. When she was little and after I'd spent a full day in the woods she'd say "Ew. You smell like the outdoors!" Like that's a bad? We didn't see a thing but that wasn't really the point. I wouldn't have given up these few hours in the woods with my daughter for all the world! 1....2....3.... AW!
My story isn't nearly as interesting but it's appropriate.

I'd say that depends. There's this spot in in the backyard that both of my large dogs immediately head to when let outside for their morning constitutional....

It's random and rare but every now and then the dendrites fire in their young brains and they come out with [I]"Hey Dad do you remember the time ...." [/I]
This, to me, is all the affirmation I need that the memories we create actually impact them. I'm sure your daughter will always keep this moment dear to her heart and likely re-tell the moment many times.

Yikes! Both of my kids are out of college...but now I have kids who are on their own but still needing help from time-to-time (whether they ask for it or not) getting established, and I have a granddaughter to spoil. So I'm still officially poor.

Someone once told me long, long ago "If you're gonna have kids, you're gonna pay forever." At one point I deluded myself into believing once I got them through college (if that's what they chose to do) I could begin reconstructing finances so at least I could afford broadheads and beer (hey, that's a good title for a country song) in my retirement.
