Went on my annual trip to Nebraska to try and shoot a big deer. I had numerous opportunities to shoot smaller bucks but was holding out for a really big one. On Saturday morning I had a doe walk by my stand which was positioned between where they were the night before and their bedding area. I knew that a buck was most likely following her so I got ready and waited as she fed around the stand. After what appeared to be an eternity, I decided she was alone and got my camera out to shoot a little video of her around my stand. As I was just positioning the smart phone camera, I hear a little grunt to my left.

You guessed it. Probably the most beautiful racked buck I've ever seen stood 5 yards broadside to my left side watching her. I got the camera in my pack and attempted to hook up my release but was shaking too bad to do it quickly. I kept glancing at him and missing the loop on the string. When I finally got hooked he was already walking away. I knew I had to get an arrow in him quickly or I might not have a chance. I shot instinctively without lining up and waiting for a good shot if he came out from behind the tree he was advancing towards. I shot right between his legs.

I would feel better if I had just taken a picture of him rather than screw things up as badly as I did. He was a honey of a deer with long brown tines that encircled his head. I'm guess he was at least a 10 pointer as I never had time to stop and observe.

It's just hard to sleep at night. It was a lifetime buck handed to me on a platter and I blew it.

Damn cell phones have ruined more men than I care to think about.

That's why I always have a couple shots of tequila first thing when I get on stand. Calms the nerves, y'know.

But seriously...sorry you missed him.

The thing to remember is to call Verizon and see if they have a trade-in program for a flip phone....Er, I mean cherish the experience.

But seriously, :wink, take this as a lesson, and never stop learning. Good luck on your further journey toward enlightenment.

I realize it's not much of a consolation when others (like me) chime in with admissions of empathy for what you're going through but this bow season I've had 4 point blank shot opportunities.

Three of these did NOT involve drawing the bow as the deer were on me and I was pinned. Never heard 'em. Never saw 'em coming. The last of the four opportunities involved a solid shoulder shot that resulted in a deer I did not recover. Unlike you though none of these opportunities involved a "lifetime buck".

All four shared my negative attitude. I had been on stand for hours and we all know how the internal dialog in our head starts after hours of seeing nothing. "I'm wasting my time, I'll never see anything. This stand is burned out. Must be predators about. blah, blah.." and then suddenly ... poof! Where the heck did that deer come from?

All four of my blown opportunities share a lapse in hyper-vigilance which all hunters understand is nearly impossible to consistently sustain.

Well stated and it does help. Thanks.

12.) Swamp Fox - 11/21/2016
There's probably a market for a breakfast shack catering to big-breasted girls who want eggs and hash browns in Nebraska.

You may have finally found your nitch.
