1.) DParker - 08/05/2016
...on my way home from work, about 5 minutes from my house. I was so busy wondering why I was pulled over (I knew it wasn't a moving violation) that when I grabbed my DL and insurance card I forgot to include my carry license in the bundle when I handed it over upon demand. It turned out that the clear plastic cover on my rear license plate is verboten in TX. I sincerely confessed my ignorance of that portion of the traffic code, explaining that I thought that so long as the cover didn't obstruct the plate in any way that it was OK (I was wrong), and that I'd had the cover on there for over a year with no issues...not as an argument, but as an explanation for my surprise at being pulled over for it now.
The moment the cop stepped away from my window to return to his cruiser to run my info I realized my mistake, and immediately retrieved the CHL (OK, it's called a LTC now) from my wallet and held it out of the window ready for his return, keeping my other hand in plain view on the top of the steering wheel. At which point he asked if I had a weapon with me. I informed him that I did and told him where it was. He reminded me of the requirement to hand over the LTC when I'm both carrying and asked for identification (even though the legislature eliminated the penalty for failing to do so a few years ago, they left the requirement intact...which is bizarre). I explained that I'd simply forgotten to do so for the reasons already mentioned, and that my philosophy was to hand it over even if it weren't required simply because nobody likes surprises during a law enforcement action. He then gave me warnings on both counts, asked me to remove the license plate cover when I got home (which I did) and let me go on my way with no citation. The point of all this? When I was pulled over by the cops I opted to not act like a dick or do anything stupid (save for forgetting my LTC at first), so in spite of being armed at the time I wasn't riddled with lead, cuffed-and-stuffed, ticketed or even spoken to in a harsh tone. Who'd a thunk it would be that simple? 2.) bluecat - 08/05/2016
How do you see a clear plastic cover? He must have been profiling you. It just shows how....
just kidding. Bet the heart rate was going a little bit over that. 3.) Swamp Fox - 08/05/2016
There you go...
I haven't run into the cop yet who wants to search my vehicle...LOL Although I did once get a slightly hard time about an axe handle I had on the floor behind my seat. I guess he could tell I can be a real menace sometimes... 4.) DParker - 08/05/2016
How do you see a clear plastic cover?
Glare from sunlight reflecting off the plastic, which I later realized is one of the reasons that such covers are agin' the law.
He must have been profiling you. It just shows how....
#fatoldmiddleclasswhiteguyslivesmatter
just kidding. Bet the heart rate was going a little bit over that.
Not really. I was just confused at first. I had been driving near him for at least 3 miles on the main drag through town until he moved into the left turn lane at a stop light next to me, so I'd been paying close attention to my speed, lane changes, etc. When the light turned green and I proceeded through the intersection, he jumped out of the turn lane and in behind me, turning his lights on at the same time...so it gave the impression that I'd done something that suddenly grabbed his attention, though I knew I didn't...hence my confusion. 5.) At which point I'm sure you explained to him that it was simply a measuring device for evaluating the backsides of potentially eligible single women. 6.) Swamp Fox - 08/05/2016
That's actually better than the story I came up with...LOL
Couple of followups I've been thinking about.
Did he asked to see your weapon? Just curious on this one.
No, which is pretty normal unless they think the situation is one in which they should take control of the weapon until the stop is over. What did strike me as unusual was that he didn't even ask me where it was. Maybe he saw the bag sitting on my passenger seat and just assumed (correctly) that it was in there.
Are you required (I still think it's a good idea) to hand over your LTC when you aren't carrying?
Not when you're not carrying, though I certainly agree.. as does my son...that handing the card over right up front is the smart move in either case. The fact that you have a carry license is going to pop up on their screen when they run your DL anyway, so I see no benefit in surprising them and potentially making them nervous, thinking that I'm trying to conceal that info. I'm of the opinion that surprises are a bad thing when dealing with law enforcement. In the two cases where I forgot to hand it over right away I think I mitigated any potential issue by having it in hand outside the window for them when they returned, and apologizing for the oversight. The silly thing is that a couple of years ago the TX legislature completely removed the penalty for failing to show your TCL when ID is demanded, but left the requirement itself intact. So it's an infraction, and LEOs can issue a citation for it...but there's absolutely nothing a judge can do to you. Because of that, as far as I know the statute is unenforced in general. 9.) bluecat - 08/08/2016
So you get your concealed carry license and you dutifully carry. You have to run some errands and you find out this store doesn't allow and then this one doesn't distinguish and the next one doesn't allow. This one does. Makes it a supreme hassle. Are you supposed to go back to your vehicle and store it there while you complete your transaction? It's not always possible to patronize only the stores that allow conceal carry.
I've gone ahead and carried in places they don't allow just because the transition is not always easy and raises other problems (gun left in vehicle with others that don't have conceal carry license which puts them in violation. Being viewed while transitioning is never good. And then there is the good old realization by people that didn't know you were carrying (brother in law) but now have to retreat to the vehicle to "take care of some business". Just curious what some of the other options are, if there are any? I've thought seriously about getting a vehicle pistol box for those situations. Still a major inconvenience though but safer. 10.) Yeah, that's pretty much the choice when I am carrying. I either give my business to a competitor or, if that's not a viable option, I put my carry piece in the safe (I keep one in my vehicle). But I don't always carry on my person, especially if I'm just running an errand in town. I always have it with me in my vehicle though, at a minimum.
I've gone ahead and carried in places they don't allow just because the transition is not always easy and raises other problems (gun left in vehicle with others that don't have conceal carry license which puts them in violation. Just curious what some of the other options are, if there are any?
That's why I just don't carry in places that post 30.06 (no concealed carry allowed), nor would I if they posted 30.07 (no open carry allowed) and I were an open carrier. Well, that and the fact that doing so is a class C misdemeanor that carries a $200 fine...or a class A if you're subsequently given verbal notice and fail to leave. So far that really hasn't been an issue for me as the vast majority of places I frequent don't post 30.06. There has been a rash of places suddenly posting both 30.06 and 30.07 that never felt the need to do so before in the 21 years that CC has been legal here, but that's mostly the result of people wanting to restrict open carry, but being duped by companies that sell signage that they need to post both 30.06 and 30.07. There have already been many cases of the 30.06 signs coming down after businesses have received feedback - including correct information on the law - from regular patrons. There's a great user-maintained resource that tracks who posts what in TX here: https://www.texas3006.com/ I get e-mails whenever new entries are added so I generally know ahead of time what to expect when going to a new business, or if one I regularly patronize changes their policy.
I've thought seriously about getting a vehicle pistol box for those situations. Still a major inconvenience though but safer.
I definitely recommend it. The idea of having my pistol (or any other firearm) stolen from my vehicle makes me ultra-paranoid, and though nothing is completely theft-proof I still like the peace of mind that comes from me at least taking reasonable measures to prevent it. 11.) bluecat - 08/08/2016
Can you recommend a car safe? I really like Fort Knox but the fact that their pistol safe has to be bolted eliminates the possibility of reusing the safe in another vehicle easily.
12.) bluecat - 08/08/2016
I'm guessing the slim design so it can slip under seat might be the easiest way to hide. I think this comes with a cable securing it around the seat bolts 13.) Jon - 08/08/2016
See what happens when you don't act like a fool and start harassing the officer? Some a-holes don't understand that being a cop is one of the most dangerous jobs to have and acting like an ass will certainly get you more problems than you need.
Well done sir, as expected. 14.) DParker - 08/08/2016

I've only had one, so my advice is based on my experience limited to just that. Once my minimum quality criteria was satisfied my choices were limited by what would fit in my vehicle (in my case the only viable option was under-seat storage, so that really narrowed it down). I ended up with the Gun Vault MV500, which attaches via a a steel cable and can be opened either by key or by a quick-entry 4-button code. At that link you can see that they also offer 3 other variants on that model, with the differences being slightly larger size and/or the addition of biometric access (fingerprint recognition, in this case). I've been pretty happy with the MV500, as has my son (I got him one for Christmas a couple of years ago). The only caveat is that they can eat 9V batteries fairly quickly depending on how often you use the push-button access, so a couple rechargeable Li-Ions and a charger would be a good additional investment if you go this route...and remember to keep a copy of the safe key on the same ring as your car keys just in case. There are a lot of other options out there that may or many not suit your needs better, so the more useful advice I can offer is to do a lot of reading and getting input from others on various firearms enthusiast sites, product reviews, etc. EDIT: You read my mind (which was a scary experience for you, I'm sure) and posted the Gun Vault before I could respond. Great minds, and all that. 15.) DParker - 08/08/2016

Well done sir, as expected.
In the 8.5 years that I've been carrying I've been pulled over two times in TX, and I did exactly the same thing in both cases (forgot to hand over the CHL with the DL, but had it ready for them when they returned to my window, along with the aforementioned apology for my absent-mindedness), and in both cases the cop was completely professional, didn't give me a hard time at all and then sent me on my way with a warning...which was really nice the first time, considering that I was doing 76 in a 55. Sure, we have some power-tripping, badge-wearing jackwagons just like any other state...but in my 24 years here I've found them to be few and far between. 16.) bluecat - 08/08/2016

It holds my full-sized M&P9 and a spare 17-rd mag with plenty of room left over. The only space issue I have is that the safe is pretty slim, so with the foam padding inside I have to take the pistol out of the cheap nylon holster I normally keep it in when I'm not carrying it on my person (I use it only as a way of protecting the gun, covering the trigger and holding the spare mag...it's useless as an actual "holster") or else I can't close the door on the safe. But it's plenty roomy in the other two dimensions. 18.) Bob Peck - 08/09/2016
On the flip side is my quick story...
After being raised by a career police officer Father and growing up among law enforcement types (ATF, FBI, DEA) as my Dad worked part time as a range officer qualifying these men and women with their service weapons ... A Virginia State Police trooper stopped me one day on my daily commute down I-64 through the Blue Ridge. I was dressed business casual for work, not speeding and just the day before had my vehicle completely worked over and inspected. To this day I have no idea why he lit up and pulled me over. I didn't receive any citation, warning or explanation. I was the respectful, calm and a mindful recipient of a law enforcement action. I know the drill. No adrenaline at all, just pure curiosity. I remember thinking to myself "This ought to be interesting." followed by "Maybe I'm being filmed for an episode of Cops" or "Maybe one of my friends in law enforcement is punking me." Everything was going well until I handed over my CCW permit and driver's license with both hands in full view on top of the steering wheel, sunglasses removed from my face and determined to maintain direct eye contact. Much to my surprise the trooper took a step back, drew his weapon, pointed it at my face, ordered me from the car and instructed me to lay face down on the interstate, ankles crossed, hands behind my back and then he cuffed me on the ground with his knee on the back of my neck. He patted me down and tossed me against the brush guard on his cruiser and made me lay flat against his steaming hot hood. I consented to a search of my vehicle where he found my locked and loaded Ruger LC9 in the glove box exactly where I told him it was. "Is this yours?" "Yes sir." "Oh, OK let me uncuff you so you can be on your way." That was it. No explanation, no nothing. I didn't care enough to engage in any further dialog. Just FYI, this was no rookie. He was wearing First Sargent stripes. I chalked it up to the trooper being safe and not sorry but talk about a complete over reaction. Sheesh. I was thinking about starting a riot and looting but I was late for work. 19.) bluecat - 08/09/2016
