1.) Swamp Fox - 07/07/2016
What are you using or interested in trying this year, or what have you been using or doing in recent years that is about to get your thumbs-up or -down?
I put this in the Big Game section in case we have anyone interested in hunting on this site, but I think we better open it up to all outdoor gear and schemes just so the thread doesn't sink to the bottom too quickly, LOL. Store-bought, homemade, plans on the drawing board or in your head, new areas, travel plans...It's all good. Let's hear about it. 2.) luv2bowhunt - 07/07/2016
I'm going to stay out of my best stands until the last week of Oct. I think I'm finally starting to learn that with pressured whitetails, it really is counterproductive to hunt them until they are moving around during daylight hours.
I'll hunt stands in new areas that I want to check out or someplace where I feel I won't screw up my bedding area stands. 3.) DParker - 07/07/2016

If you'll post up the GPS coordinates for those stands I'm sure someone would be happy to stop in and check them out prior to the end of October for you, just to make sure that nobody's pressuring the deer. 4.) BULLZ-i - 07/08/2016
BOUGHT THE GIRL A NEW BLACK GOLD ASCENT 3 PIN ADJUSTABLE SIGHT
5.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2016
Looks good. How are you setting it up, yardage-wise?
6.) BULLZ-i - 07/08/2016
20 30 40
BOTTOM PIN THEN BECOMES THE ADJUSTABLE BY DIAL TO WHATEVER YA FEEL COMFORTABLE AND THEN DIAL BACK UP RETURN TO 20 (ZERO) 7.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2016
I figured something like that. Something in my brain or eyes has always given me fits shooting multi-pins at 5-yard increments. I think I tried gap-shooting 10-yarders briefly but wasn't happy enough with that to stick with it. Maybe I'll try it again if I have the opportunity. I bet I'd do better with that than holding over.
I'd like to see a design (I suppose you could DIY to a certain extent) where your TOP pin becomes your long-range adjustable. I shoot top pin on multi pins MUCH better than bottom pin at the same distance. :bang: 8.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2016

I used to be able to do them fairly easily years ago, but I find it a lot more difficult to psych myself up for it now. 9.) luv2bowhunt - 07/08/2016
Depends on the conditions and what day of the week it is. If it is hot, windy, or rainy, no I won't make it all day. If it is cold, calm or decent winds, good conditions I'll sit all day.
If I am on vacation and it is a weekday, I will sit all day. I see more deer traffic, kill more bucks when I'm the only one out on a weekday. Saturdays are completely different when other guys are driving around, hunting turkeys, squirrels, etc. etc. I started taking a vacation week the last week of our archery season (second week of Nov.) about 15 years ago and was amazed out how much better the hunting was/is on the weekdays. Going over my records I noticed I can narrow it down even more. The best day I've had to kill a buck has been the Monday or Tuesday of that week. Which puts it around Nov. 6-9. If I only had a couple days to hunt, I would hunt those days. I killed the buck last year on Nov. 9, 3:00 PM. 10.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2016
I agree with you about the weekdays. If it weren't for guests or camp friends, I'd never hunt weekends, or even fish them. Assuming I could work around them, I mean.
11.) Jon - 07/08/2016
I just started building a box blind on my property, simple 4x8 box on a 6' tall raised platform. Made it tall enough that I can roll an office chair around inside with 2' wide windows (2 on front/back, 1 on ends). I use these allot on the hunting club properties but hadn't built one on my own land yet. This will make it much easier to do an all day sit if the weather is nasty during the rut and after.
I know this isn't a "new" idea but it's new for me on my home property. 12.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2016
I'd love to see pics/plans/ materials list when you have time. I know some folks who could stand to step it up on their blind builds, LOL.
Part of that is not wanting to build hot enclosures, but I keep saying we could vent the bottoms and the roofs and be no worse than heavy burlap. But does anyone listen? Noooo....LOL...They love seeing the burlap get ratty and thin and replacing it each year, I guess. Will you enclose the windows in some way or just have cut-outs? 13.) bow-fishhunter - 07/08/2016
I plan on re rigging my duck decoys with Texas rigs. I used them for the first time last year and really like it…
14.) Triton Rich - 07/09/2016
I bought an old Ben Pearson recurve off of ebay. My plan is to take a doe with it after harvesting a giant buck with my compound. After shooting the recurve (instinctive) for a few weeks, it's not looking very good for being able to hunt with it this year. My target is approximately 20" by 20" and with the bullseye in the center the target has just barely been big enough to catch the arrow from 20 yards several times. I do occasionally shoot a 3-4" group but not with any consistency yet. It has been improving so we'll see how it goes.
15.) Swamp Fox - 07/09/2016
I think our old buddy KYHunter took up the recurve a while back and had some posts about the slow progress he was making. Then he got married and had a baby and we never heard from him again.
I don't know if any of all that is related. :wink 16.) Swamp Fox - 07/09/2016

I'm not a duck hunter so I had to look that up. Watched a few videos and all but one captured the weight with the bottom loop somehow. That is, it did not run freely up and down the line. No one explained why they handled the weight the way they did, so I got curious about the pros and cons of free-running vs. captured weights on these set-ups. I wouldn't think it's storage. Do you have a idea? Also, do you cinch the weights up against the decoy bodies somehow after putting the lines on your carabiner, or double-connect each decoy line on an individual carabiner, so as to prevent slack from allowing the weights and lines to twist around each other, as I would think they would when using a single loop or even a single carabiner to hook up? With the exception of decoy bags, which are quite handy, I've never examined waterfowl decoy gear, so I don't know how any of this works. :wink 17.) billy b - 07/09/2016
I got back on the W. Texas lease this year, hopefully there is another good buck in my future, also I get to hunt during the week when there normally isn't anybody there except me & Jerry, that'll be nice.
18.) crookedeye - 07/10/2016

Aren't those the same people who make the Schweddy Buck Balls Mock Scrape Kit? 22.) Jon - 07/11/2016
Here's a new one (I think). My hunting club bought 6 old porta pottys and cleaned them out, stripped the insides and painted them to use as an elevated blind. They will work great. We just installed 4 yesterday on 6' tall platforms looking over the marsh.

Will you enclose the windows in some way or just have cut-outs?
Swampy, pretty easy build, to make the platform just use 2x6's and build a box that a full sheet of 4x8 plywood will go on, use 2, 2x6floor joists under it for more support for the floor. I use 8' 4x4's for the legs, mine sits 6' in the air, 2' in the ground. There are brackets you can buy to hold the 4x4's in the corners but I just screw them into the corners with 4" lag screws then brace the legs with 2x4's and stand it up using my tractor bucket (instead of asking 4 friends to help). The walls are just plywood with some 2x4 framing, I make the walls intertwine for strength and a sheet of plywood for the roof with a slight slant so water runs off. The windows are just cutouts, they don't close. I paint the inside black and put carpet underlay down on the floor for sound dampening. Door is just a hinged piece of plywood with a latch to keep it closed. Simple. Here are pictures of it going up, needs paint,a roof and door in this picture. Almost done. Okay, thanks for the details. I believe my bunch of monkeys can handle that. The port-a-potties is a great idea!...LOL. Next time I'm in one I'll have to look at the floor to see how it bolts down...LOL BTW, somebody in your club deserves the Camo Artist of the Year award... 27.) Jon - 07/11/2016

I really wanted to put actual windows in the box blind but ran out of time and figured burlap was the next best option for covert operations, she's done now. Time to hunt!
