6-800 yards dead point..... caliber to get?

Heat-seeking guided missile?

But seriously.....

Do the pelts matter to you? Without giving the matter too much thought I'd be inclined to say something like .243 Win or 7mm-08. There are certainly cartridges that would yield better ballistics at that range (like a few of the 6.5mm options), and for 'yote-sized game. But when you weigh in other factors like cost, ammo availability, rifle selection, etc I'd be willing to bet that .243 Win/7mm-08 fare pretty well.
3.) Swamp Fox - 05/25/2016
Depending on whether this rifle is supposed to do anything else, or is dedicated....blah, blah, blah....

These are what I'd consider...Based on my biases...There are lots of interesting 6 and 6.5's on top of these...Depending on how much of a pioneer/oddball/weirdo you want to be...

.257 Wby Mag

.264 Win Mag

.270 WSM

7mm STW
4.) Bob Peck - 05/25/2016
.270 WSM all day, everyday and don't forget ... the rifle is only as good as the optics and shooter looking through them.
5.) Jon - 05/25/2016
Well, a pretty open ended question as well as one NO-ONE can answer. The perfect rifle for any particular game is only perfect to the one person who claims it's perfect.
Are you hunting yotes to kill them because they are a nuisance or are you hunting them to save their hides?
What would your average shot on them be? I mean 6-800 yards is asking a little much for a single caliber don't you think?
Are you on a budget, not only for the rifle but for the ammo as well.
These questions really should be answered before you can get a truly correct answer.
6.) BULLZ-i - 05/25/2016
SHOOT THE COYOTES AT 6 YARDS DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE ONES AT 800, THEY ARE MUCH LESS DANGEROUS AT THAT RANGE.

What we need around here is a good argument...:wink

I was pretty interested in .25 WSSM for a while...I think Marine1 bought one...TxHunter was supposed to keep me posted on how he liked it....Or something...:ach:...Not sure the cartridge went anywhere after a few years....

No we don't!
10.) Swamp Fox - 05/26/2016
I'll bite your legs off!

11.) Jon - 05/26/2016
I bought a .22WMR and that thing is bad ass at closer ranges. I haven't shot it past 125yds but you could pop an eye at that distance without problem. Mind you, I'm visually impaired in my right eye and can't focus very well so that distance is tough for me. I was never much of a small caliber guy until I saw what this round can do. Very impressed.

Not to the guys in my 1000 yard club. I'm the weirdo shooting a .308 whereas most of the crew is shooting 300 WSM but you'll find the cross section seems to stay with 300 mags, 6.5s, and 6mm guns. A standard 6BR set the ten-shot 1000-yard world record.
13.) BULLZ-i - 05/26/2016
800 YARD COYOTE, I IMAGINE THIS IS A REM 700 VTR IN .308 NOT .223

I can find a few great 800yd guns BUT those aren't really kind to a pelt at 6 yards, see what I'm saying?

To be a member of the 1000-yard club and the mile-high club, now that would be something.
17.) DParker - 05/27/2016
OK, I'm going to rescind my hastily-arrived at .243 Win recommendation. However, I think 7mm-08 is still a viable option, depending on how much value you place on cost, availability, longer barrel life, etc.

19.) crookedeye - 05/30/2016
.270 WSM all day, everyday and don't forget ... the rifle is only as good as the optics and shooter looking through them.
Good day sir! Very true words.. this rifle will be coyote groundhog specific.
24.) DropzOfWild - 06/05/2016
600-800 max yardage it's specific to coyote or ground hog. I'm not a huge firearm fan I have 2 deer rifles that I grew up with and bought a savage 17 hmr with a sweet 17 bsa for squirrels and love it, coyotes are becoming an issue.... plus get me and the boy out of the house on baking days ☺... Thanks for the feed back I totally forgot about this thread. No hidden agendas I don't know anyone personally who hunts them I know a trapper ...it's a rifle that goes to the field not a beauty show
25.) DropzOfWild - 06/05/2016
Haha read it all! I would like to add economical
26.) Swamp Fox - 06/06/2016
Ah...The shooting buddy and economics might change things slightly. My four listed calibers might need to get built up to by a youth or someone who is recoil-sensitive, or who at least would rather avoid recoil. Of course, chosing a heavy rifle will help with that AND should go hand in hand with the 600-800 yard goal. Not that any of them will blow you back into the next county, but they're not popguns either, especially shooting prone, or for a smaller or beginning shooter, etc.

Other than the .270 WSM, which you should be able to find anywhere and which runs from relatively inexpensive on up, ammo availability and cost of my suggested calibers should be weighed as well, especially since you will want to practice a lot. See my recoil comment again, also. It's no fun and counterproductive to learning to shoot well when you chose a rifle that punches you...

If you come in considerably on the distance you are trying to make the rifle work, your options for cheaper, milder and more commonly available calibers and ammo become much greater and your chosen rifle's barrel may last longer, though there are certainly a few hot loads that will take their toll among the "long-range" varminters considered good choices for "mid-long-range", but not appropriate for 800-yard hunting. .220 Swift comes to mind. If this idea strikes your fancy, you might look into .22-250, not that it solves all issues.

If you cut your distance even further than the .22-250 will sanely allow (on a coyote), then your options open up even more. Recoil and ammo costs can go down further, and trigger time and happiness may go up.
