We don't have a lot of morels around here, but we do seem to have a lot of people who want to find some. :-) Those steaks are making me hungry! Who went axis hunting? What's the meat like? 3.) Hunter - 05/04/2016

So it isn't much different than a white tail buck. A little gamey and a little tough but not bad at all. I've heard if you shoot the ones in brush country they are down right bad... 6.) billy b - 05/06/2016

Let's not ask Swampy if he has any fungus!

Elk and fiddle heads.

I had to look up fiddleheads. I'm not sure we have much of a fern presence around here. Although maybe I walk right by stuff. I think I'll keep a closer eye peeled.

These are about a day or two too late. any later than this they get bitter. when they are good they taste between asparagus and green beans. 12.) DParker - 06/02/2016

All ferns go through a "fiddlehead" stage, but when talking edibles the term has become a shorthand specifically for the fiddlehead stage of the Ostrich Fern, which occurs...among many other places...in areas of N. Carolina (I don't really know which areas, but I believe I saw some along the Blue Ridge Pkwy many years ago): http://www.ncwildflower.org/plant_galleries/details/matteuccia-struthiopteris http://www.smokymountainnews.com/news/item/2383-the-story-of-the-fiddlehead?tmpl=component&print=1 http://www.gracelinks.org/2296/real-food-right-now-and-how-to-cook-it-fiddleheads 13.) Good links. Thanks.
http://www.ncwildflower.org/plant_galleries/details/matteuccia-struthiopteris
Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if they're more common elsewhere, especially to my west. I've never noticed a fern that looks like this in my regular stomping grounds: ![]() |
