The rules are the same as last year. Remember that we now have a Recipe Tie Breaker (explained below).

The dates for the contest are March 15- May 31, 2016.

Please use only this thread for sign-up. I won't be looking for entrants on other threads. If you see your name in Post #3, you're already in.

Requirements for Reporting Your Kill



1-A picture of you, the bird, and weapon posted to the Kill Reporting Thread within ten days of the kill, posted in the Reporting Thread which we will set up. Provide the date of the kill, the measurements and the total score for your bird in the Reporting Thread, along with the story (if you'd like). This year, you can also post a turkey recipe or cooking tip along with or ASAP after the kill report. You can write out a full recipe, summarize one, provide a cooking tip or post a link to a recipe or cooking tip. In the event of a tie regarding bird measurements, the contestant or team with the most recipes/tips will be declared the winner. You do not need to kill a bird to post a recipe or tip, so a hunter who skunks can still help his team by placing in the contest this way.

2-A picture of the beard (still attached to the bird, DO NOT CUT OFF BEARD) and tape measure or ruler should show the length. Show entire length of beard and tape measure, including the tip. Measurement is to the end of the longest strand.


3-A picture of each spur and a tape measure showing the length. Spurs must still be attached to the legs. Measurement is along the outside centerline, so with spurs that have any curve to them, you'll need a flexible tape.


Scoring:
Scores will be determined by spur length x 10 plus beard length x 2. A vertical bow kill earns 10 bonus points. Providing weight is optional and will not count toward your score.

For instance:
Beard is 8.5" = 8.5x2=17 pts.
Spurs 1" & 1-1/8" = 2.125 total spur length x 10 = 21.25 pts.
Vertical Bow Kill Bonus Points: Plus 10

So: 17 + 21.25 = 38.25 pts. total for a gun or crossbow kill. A vertical bow kill would add 10 points for a total score of 48.25.

All kills to be scored to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Only 1 bird may be entered per contestant. If you take a bigger bird after you have entered one already, you may upgrade to the better bird. When you upgrade it will cancel out the previous entry. You must be registered for the contest prior to the date of your kill. You cannot kill a bird and enter it for a teammate.

Each member's bird will count toward the team's total points.

In the past, in the event of a tie, we said we'd match the teams' top bird, second bird, third bird, etc. until we had a higher score for one team. Instead of that, we're going to use the recipe/cooking tip thing described above as the tie-breaker. This eliminates the possibility that one slightly bigger bird in one team slot creates a victory over a more successful team effort on the other side (e.g., one bird from Team A beating two or three from Team B). In the event the recipe tie-breaker method does not result in a winner, the original top bird method will be the final deciding factor.

It's good that there are at least two people per team. It's always safer to hunt with a buddy.

I thought about having two teams of three and promoting it like the Super Bowl of turkey hunting, but then I thought we could get to know our teammates better if we kept the teams small...

Another idea would be to have a selection committee select the hunters that have proven themselves over the previous season. We could have brackets and play-in contests as each week hunters advance to the next round by proving their hunting skills. Then in the final week the two remaining hunters go on a filmed championship hunt and the first hunter to kill a turkey is showered with confetti while "One Shining Moment" is played on the 8-track.

Might be logistically difficult with 6 people though.

Of course there would be a lot of controversy over the hunters that feel they should have been selected by the committee but were snubbed due to poor hunting skills or although successful, hunted animals that were not difficult to kill such as robins and field mice. Proposals to expand the brackets to include 8 people would surely be hotly debated.

It would take three weeks to name the champion, though, and I'm not sure we could sustain the necessary level of excitement that long...LOL


I think it's [I]Outdoor Life [/I]that does the Ultimate Sportsman competition (or some such) which seems like it might be interesting---it's a skills competition over time--- but I've never mustered the motivation to follow it.


By the way, I have Virginia finally reaching their basketball destiny and beating the Jayhawks, which will be only slightly less fun than whupping the Tar Heels.

The Cavaliers, you say? Why yes. They have a place in my heart, although I found out too late that Carolina had much better-looking girls...


Also, I have UNC-W beating Dook right out of the gate...:grin::grin::grin:

It's all a crap shoot from the first tip-off. Today is the last day I can look at my bracket and not cry.

Haven't seen Virginia play although I hear they are purty good. My side bet is that I'll see Roy cry before it's all over. As much as I hate the dookies, they will more than likely be in the sweet 16. Didn't they beat UNC on UNC's home floor this year?

dano make a note.. if you use the cow decoy this year, make sure you tape some straw to its mouth like in a feeding position..you should be able to walk right up to the turkeys..remember the turkeys have a brain the size of a pea..we should be able to slaughter them with that set-up...

you need to give the cow decoy another chance...i dont think i was walking directly behind you while making that move on the herd of antelope.. i'll admit i was peeking over you shoulder at times..that had to be it..i never seen antelope spook so bad before..it was like they seen somthing like they never seen before..they practicaly came out of there skin!!


plus that cow decoy is light weight.. you should carry that with you at all times..:grin:
