Now that football and hunting seasons are over (you know what I mean), I might put Outdoor Channel and/or Sportsman Channel back on the TV package. Or maybe not. I hardly ever watch them.

But I was curious: Are there any fishing shows or gun hunting shows you like and would recommend? All I ever hear about is bowhunting shows, it seems like, so I'm good on those, unless there's something pretty obscure you'd like to mention.

I haven't seen a hunting/fishing/shooting show worth watching since I don't know when (save for your turkey hunting episodes...those were Academy Award material).

I used to really like In Fisherman (subscribed to the mag too) because it was actually informative, being done by marine biologists rather than the usual good ol' boy personality-centric blah, blah, blah product-pimping fest that pretty much all other fishing shows are. It was especially good when I spent a year in Wisconsin, since they tended (and still do, I think) to focus on chasing northern species that I didn't know all that much about. But having been in the D/FW area for over 23 years now there just isn't any mystery left when it comes to large-mouth bass, catfish, crappie, white bass and stripers.

The shooting and hunting shows are pretty much all product commercials pretending to be something else, just like most of the magazines have become. Hell, even Field and Stream is now just mostly a bunch of Fudds who would gladly sell your 2A rights so long as they get to keep their $multi-K bolt-action rifles and ornately engraved over/under shotguns they got for free for singing the manufacturer's praises.

LOL...

You probably saw where Petzal got a bunch of grief for his coverage of the SHOT Show...Unfairly, I think, but I'm guessing most people didn't read the column, just the "modern sporting rifle"-centric commentary about the column---LOL.

I like In-Fisherman Magazine for the same reasons you do, though I skip the articles on walleyes, etc. I used to avoid it completely because it was so Northern-oriented, but I think it's a lot better now. If the TV show has followed the same pattern, I will probably check it out. Was it Babe Winkleman who used to be on there? I can take him in small doses, LOL.

I've seen some other fish professor on there, too. Seemed like he knew what he was talking about, but also that he was happy to be out of the lab. I could probably have one beer with him before I wandered off to find the pork rinds and someone of my own species.

I like Steve Rinella's Meateater, which is almost all gun hunting, and I'm curious if Craig Boddington's show is any better or worse than I remember from a few years ago. I really, really like and respect him as a gun writer (though I'm a smaller-caliber guy than he is) and his daughter seems sharp. I think she might be on the show. That coud be an improvement, or not. The show was decent but nothing special, last time I checked. You had to like Boddington and the destinations, I think.

The fairness (or lack thereof) of the grief Petzal received for his comments depends entirely on the level/nature of the grief itself. I agree that some was over the top (which is true of all public reactions to anything even remotely controversial), but he most certainly deserved to be called on the carpet for the arrogant stupidity inherent in this...

"This year, Range Day sounded like the Battle of Dak To, or perhaps Fallujah, with the distinctive pop-pop-pop of full-auto fire, which was extremely popular amongst all the SEAL wannabes. Indeed, this was symbolic of the whole show, which has now become so heavily militarized that you have to look fairly hard for something designed to kill animals instead of people."

And bear in mind that this wasn't some off-the-cuff verbal remark. It was something he's supposed to have taken the time to think about and even proofread.
Was it Babe Winkleman who used to be on there? I can take him in small doses, LOL.
No, Babe ("Winkelman") had his own show (Good Fishing) which, now that you mention it, was a decent watch too...though also more personality-centric than I prefer. Outdoor Secrets is also his show, but I don't know if/how often he appears on it himself. All I know is that it's produced by his company, Babe Winkelman Productions Inc.

Yeah, Boddington's OK to watch, but mostly just because he seems like a decent guy and he goes on some exotic big game hunts. It's a lot more interesting to watch a guy rush to get a shot off at a charging water buffalo than listen to Bubba chatter in a blind about the {insert species that's common in your own back yard} that's slowly approaching from down-wind.
