I'm finally getting a chance to get at least a few traps out and enjoying every minute of more time outdoors.

Yesterday afternoon we got a few quick sets out in a back water area off a drainage, this back flow area has always been good to me in the past. This area is usually quite full of water and has been a great spot for beaver, rats, and mink. Unfortunately, someone took the dam out and this year it is mere trickle...but we still found a few decent pockets of deeper water holding some rats.

Here are a couple of pictures from yesterday:

Beaver dam or man-made?
3.) Wild Bob - 11/12/2015
I think originally it was just an old oxbow that has always held water...then as vegetation grew up, in came all the critters.

It's kind of odd because the rancher in the area has always liked the pond areas because it created a great place for cattle to water. We did not have any major flooding this year to breach the dam, and highly doubt the rancher breached it intentionally. I guess I need to take a little time to hike downstream and visually see what has happened for sure. Just didn't have time to do that yesterday...

But in reality; the other side of the creek is on the Res, and all kinds of irrational things happen there, so may be some dingbat breached the dam intentionally to hinder the rancher's operation. Hate to be paranoid, but stranger things have occurred.

Congrats to you son!

He is fortunate to be growing up in such beautiful country.

Update:

We're getting them one at a time!

Congrats to you & your son, I wish I knew more about trapping I'm trying to catch a red fox now, he torments my hound unmercifully almost every day, he sits in the outside of the chain link fence & scratches while Blue is trying to pull the fence down, it's brutal.
7.) Wild Bob - 11/15/2015
Thanks for the feedback guys, its a fun way to spend more time outdoors for sure.

What kind of a trap are you using to try and catch that fox Billy? Is he digging it up? PM me if you want with some more details and I'll be glad to offer any assistance I can.
8.) billy b - 11/15/2015
The only thing I have is a cage trap, about 2&1/2 feet long, been using fox pee without luck, but I did catch a possum.:bang:

Nice pics WB. Congrats to your son.

Thanks.

Billy - are you in an area where you have to be concerned about catching other people’s dogs or cats? Or are you safe from dealing with that? The reason I ask is that fox are notoriously tough to coax in to a confined space such as a cage trap...there is a better tool to use; a leg hold trap is the most efficient fox trap there is (except for may be a snare in the right situation - but I doubt you want to go that route).

Have you thought about calling Acme?

12.) Wild Bob - 11/16/2015
I think those only work on coyotes...:-)

I'm in a rural area on a lake, I have 5 acres with about half woods, I will pick up a leg trap & try it out, thanks.
