What was the relationship with "Winchester Arms"/Olin? Seems like if it had been what I thought it was, they could have made a go of it at least for a while longer. But perhaps I had the wrong idea to begin with.

Everything else is a licensing deal. Guns, knives, apparel, accessories, gun safes ... you name it. It's all licensing deals. This is not the first time (nor the last) a licensee made a go of it and failed. This is also not the first time (and probably not the last time) the Winchester brand will be leveraged to sell archery gear.

I didn't realize it was all licensees. I know ammo was different from everything else but I thought at least some of the firearms business came back in-house, so to speak.

IIRC, all "Winchester" branded firearms are currently manufactured by Browning and FN under the aforementioned licensing arrangements. Some are assembled in Portugal (like the Model 70 and XPR), Belgium (O&U shotguns), Japan (Model 94 and a few others), etc.

Maybe I'm confusing my recollections of what was "American-made" or "in production" and what wasn't at such and such a time, with what was "under license" and what was being brought back "in-house."

The other one I can't keep up with is Marlin.
