I have been enjoying keeping up with the deer study being done by Penn State Univ.
If you want to see how a particular buck can move around on public land check out the story. http://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/projects/deer/news/2015/the-life-and-times-of-buck-8917 2.) bluecat - 10/20/2015
That was pretty interesting.
3.) Jon - 10/20/2015
That was awesome, thanks for sharing goober. See, there are a few deer in Pa but they either get hit by cars or shot while they are 1.5yrs old.....
4.) Swamp Fox - 10/20/2015
Kewl!
:tu: 5.) billy b - 10/21/2015
Those clips are amazing, what do you think happened on the last one, his movements were completely different than the other clips, lots of back & forth long trips. I guess the rut got him down , he rested for several days in Dec. then the long trip. That tracking is very interesting, I wish out wardend would do something like that around my area of Tx. Thanks Gerry.
6.) luv2bowhunt - 10/21/2015
Why would he go back to that one spot he was at 1 1/2 yrs before to die? He could have been wounded in the late flintlock season I guess, it runs after Christmas until the second Sat. in Jan.

Who Really Nos All This Stuff Anyway?
by Swamp Fox Even a buck with transmitter history In our minds remains woodland mystery, Which just goes to show How little we know, And for hunters it's even more twistery. 8.) Wild Bob - 10/21/2015
Interesting, thanks for sharing the study Luv2. :tu:
9.) Swamp Fox - 10/21/2015
I noticed in the comments section Bill Winke echoes the musing of a previous commenter about whether that might have been the last place that buck saw its mother.
Is there any evidence that bucks imprint on their mothers or even the area they grew up in like that, after they're dispersed? I wouldn't doubt they can recognize their mothers should they run into them again, but is there any reason why somebody like Winke would entertain the idea...beyond that it's a spooky and intriguing thought? 10.) luv2bowhunt - 10/21/2015
I thought someone would mention this comment "In a previous post we showed that on a population level the rut does not change from year to year. And the moon has no effect on the timing."
They showed their study results in 2014 that the moon had no effect on the rut based on conception dates. I'm sure weather has more effect on what hunters see during the rut than the moon does. 11.) billy b - 10/21/2015
Who nos all this stuf?
12.) Swamp Fox - 10/21/2015
My theory is that you might not expect to see all of the rut activity you want to on days during a bright moon period, but only because everything's happening at night--or nearly everything. Beyond that, though, I agree with you.

Wow. Useful and interesting content on HC?! Thanks for the post Luv2. It made my day!

Hey, I know this is random, as the kids say, but I was bopping around on the internet and stumbled upon some other places people can find--or leave--useful and interesting content:

There is useful and interesting stuff posted all the time here. We also like to have fun while doing it. 16.) Wild Bob - 10/21/2015
I agree with Swampy and Blue, especially the part about having fun while doing it.
It's all relevant. Along those lines, come to think it...I did have a smile on my face last night after the lights went out in my bedroom. (In reference to having fun while doing it.) :-) 17.) Swamp Fox - 10/21/2015

LOL...
I'd like to see if they have any other deer that visited that same area at the same time. I think I read that they haven't had (any?) mortality in collared deer other than this buck, so the death puzzle is not going to get solved, but a random, unrepeated mile-long trek in June for half a day is intriguing on its own. 21.) luv2bowhunt - 10/21/2015

Where did you read that? They have had many, many deer killed that are wearing these collars. Just one last Sat., they got a mortality signal at 1:30 PM on a buck and sent someone out to track it down. Collar had been unbolted and removed and placed around a dead limb. It was 2 1/2 yrs old and they assumed a hunter legally killed it and didn't know what to do with the collar. He didn't leave it near a gut pile or anything but placed it in the middle of an overgrown clearcut. 50% of their radio collared fawns have died so far this year. They get lots of dead deer, just not as many from hunters as you might think. 22.) bluecat - 10/21/2015
They should have taken a metal detector to the carcass. You never know.

Right. "It's a fair cop."
I plead my use of "I think I read" and the parenthetical "any?" as indications I was not making an attempt to be precise, and could be skeptical. I should have gone back and re-read and then phrased better, but then again, No one expects the Spanish Inquisition! 28.) bluecat - 10/22/2015

Generally one doesn't go cold turkey.
Once you get to step 6 (ballads) and step 7 (free-verse) the success rate is on your side. 34.) bluecat - 10/22/2015
You might want to choose your friends wisely. If one of them breaks out a limerick (There once was a democrat from nantucket), you might fall off the wagon.

Good luck! Probably the best thing to do, is when you do find a post you like and it is strictly a topic you like, make a derogatory comment about the website and the posters. :wink 39.) Bob Peck - 10/22/2015
