1.) Jon - 08/20/2015
Tilling some of my land for food plots, planning 2 plots that are approx 20' x 300' This one turns left at the end, the other one will be the south corridor at the end of this one.
Here are some before pictures. They will be transition plots between corn and woods. Planting either tomorrow or early next week depending on the weather. 2.) Swamp Fox - 08/20/2015
Do you have your seed yet?
Planting any particular type of oats? 3.) Jon - 08/20/2015
A friend of mine does this for a living, along with owning Denver the Guilty Dog. He's coming in to do the work. I have no idea what type of oats but I'll find out.
4.) billy b - 08/20/2015
You have a great looking place Jon, I bet you can grow some studs if they aren't already there, can't wait to see how you do this year. Just think, NOOOOO GOOBERS to deal with anymore.
5.) Jon - 08/20/2015
There might be some goobers leasing the farm that surrounds me, haven't met them yet. I left a note on a stand they are building to call me, I want to talk to them about QDM and give them permission to come onto my property to track wounded deer etc. Hope they aren't goobers BUT you never know
There might be some goobers leasing the farm that surrounds me,
If I knew how to get in on that lease...........you ain't even seen a goober yet..........:wink 7.) Swamp Fox - 08/21/2015
LOL...
Would be very interested in what you plant...Ask him if Brooks or Harrison oats are any good for your area. Or I suppose there's a small possibility he's an " oats are oats" kinda guy....But I bet somebody who does plots professionally has an opinion on best varieties.... 8.) Jon - 08/21/2015
He's not one of those, I know that. I guarantee he has a specific variety that works in this soil. I'll find out for you.
LUV, there would be nothing better than having you on the lease that butts up to my property. I have no argument for the goober comment, you are spot on. 9.) Jon - 08/21/2015
My man says he's using Ladino and Alsike clover and Jerry Oats which are a sweet oat and he said this combination works great in our area. Expect the clover to start popping up in 8 days and the oats in 3-4 days.
10.) billy b - 08/21/2015
That really sounds good Jon, I think you are about to realize the dream all of us have. Congrats, now the work begins:wink
11.) Swamp Fox - 08/21/2015
Thanks for that!

Here's a crappy picture of the plot going around the corner from the other pictures. All in all it is a little over an acre, goes about 100yds then turns and another 100yds.

I can't see anything...? Anyone else having that problem?
20.) Swamp Fox - 08/24/2015

Jon - 08/26/2015
Looks great Piggy, did you plant them yourself? What did you put in?
26.) Ohbuckhunter - 08/26/2015
Yep. Spent Monday and Tuesday getting them ready and planted. Today I'm going over to put 2 more in a crossed the road.
Red and white Clover, chicory , oats, purple top turnips, and pumpkins in one plot to try out 27.) Swamp Fox - 08/26/2015
Deer DESTROY punkins around here...
28.) Wild Bob - 08/27/2015
Looks good, good luck with them Ohio.
29.) Jon - 08/31/2015
We haven't had one drop of rain since the plots were installed, I was very worried about the seed not germinating and just sitting there. I went out last night and what a pleasant surprise, the oats are popping, some shoots are 2-3" tall. I also see some clover popping up slowly. I'll take pictures tonight
30.) billy b - 08/31/2015
Bring em on.
31.) Swamp Fox - 08/31/2015
Very good. :tu:
I've had some success planting immediately before a rain, but then I'm on my own schedule for the most part and have some flexibility on the timing. I throw out the oats and my landowner comes in right after with the tractor and covers, and then I go back over and broadcast the clover. Then I rely on an imminent rain to pack the clover seed in. It's worked out great most years, and much better than trying to put the clover in with the oats before the tractor comes in to cover. Everything on my end is done by walking the plots with a little spinner bag...Sometimes I have some help from a buddy, which saves some time. The preferred dates for planting around here are around Oct. 1. I watch the weather report and also like to peek at the Farmer's Almanac for fine tuning the date. I don't know if there's anything to it or if it's like the Solunar Tables for Hunting and Fishing LOL, but the several times I've hit the FA date and my planting date and the rain all exactly right were banner years....:-) 32.) Jon - 08/31/2015
I think the perfect time is early Oct and late April. I didn't want to be tilling during the best time of year to be hunting so I did it now. Hopefully it isn't an issue, looks like it's going to be really nice by late Sept.

34.) billy b - 09/01/2015
It's gonna be great Jon.
35.) Jon - 09/01/2015
I was able to have a long conversation with the farmer who abutts my property yesterday. Very nice older gent, about 70yrs old. He and his father/grandfather have been farming this area all their lives. He has 6 guys who hunt his farm, they only gun hunt which is good BUT they hunt crop damage which means starting today, they can gun hunt until next May. He says the deer are tearing up his beans and he wants them to stop.
I'm hoping the deer will find my property a safe place to come when the guns start blazing. I asked him to have the guys give me a courtesy call if they need to come on my property to track a deer, he was agreeable and offered up the same courtesy. Overall, a nice visit. They can't kill em all, right? 36.) Hunter - 09/01/2015
Those deer will get smart in a hurry you would think.
37.) Swamp Fox - 09/01/2015
... He says the deer are tearing up his beans and he wants them to stop.
Tell him you're willing to rough-talk them if they don't cooperate...LOL Sounds like you have a good neighbor. Now hopefully the trigger-pullers are of the same cloth. :tap: Supposedly, I had some depredation hunting done across the road from me last summer (though I don't know why I shouldn't assume it goes on every year) and according to my landowner, the deer were "hammered." I found it a strange and frustrating year hunting my property, especially for bucks, but I didn't lack for does in pockets. I have a lot of bedding cover and much of it is thick and treated as sanctuary. I also had really good acorns last year. I can't put any lack of hunting success on the depredation hunting. I did have less success than most years, but I think that was due to other things. If you can't get SC rednecks shooting deer at night to put a dent in the herd, I'd say we're all safe from the threat of drastic under-population, LOL. 38.) Wild Bob - 09/01/2015
I'd think that if you provide a safe haven for them, they'll come and hang around on your place more.
I second Hunter's comment though about the deer getting smart... Further more, IMO crop damage hunting can screw a piece of property up! My sister and brother-in-law are farmers in upstate NY and my two nephews work and hunt the 750 acre family farm. My sister's boys (that are my nephews) are die-hard hunters but like hunting in the fall and during the season. Anyhow, about six years ago they were having problems with the deer (especially with their pumpkin crop, which they grow a lot of) so my brother-in-law let a couple guys with Crop Damage permits on their place to 'thin the deer out.' My nephews were kind of bummed, but they understood the necessity. So they let these guys do damage control for 2 years straight...They did cull out a lot of deer, but they also still had damaged crops, not as bad, but none the less, still had to deal with some crops loss. Well, fast forward to today (I just visited them a couple of weeks ago) and I was discussing this scenario with my brother-in-law and my nephews while I was there...Now it's 4 years after the blood letting stopped, and my nephews are still pissed because they tell me the deer hunting on their farm is still screwed up and has yet to bounce back to half as good as it used to be. Of course, I know there a lot of variables and additional conditions that come into play in the matter, but hunting wise; allowing damage control has been a curse on their property. I guess it just goes to show; you can’t really have your cake and eat too in this matter! (I would just be glad they aren't allowed to do it on your proerty as well.) 39.) Swamp Fox - 09/01/2015

It's too bad Luv2's not here, because he'd be willing to mix it up, LOL...
:tap: :wink 42.) Jon - 09/01/2015
Well, he's been doing this for years, probably close to 30 years. This area (Delaware) is probably a little different than most, the deer get hammered from farmers all year long but they are still crawling everywhere in great numbers. I've had tons on camera and in the yard so hopefully I'll see more once the crops come down.
I would, of course, much rather have them not hunt the way they do BUT it's their livelyhood and I can't blame them for wanting to knock down the population. That said, they've been doing this forever and the numbers are still good so either they aren't killing many OR the deer fill in like sand on the beach. 43.) luv2bowhunt - 09/01/2015

:tap: :wink
Correction.......used to be willing to mix it up. I don't have that drive anymore. I agree with what Wild Bob said and he should stand up for himself against your bullying.:tu: The current PSU studies I've been reading are showing that many does disperse also, not just the bucks. So if you do shoot off a high percentage of deer, you just create a vacuum that appeals to the next deer that comes along. And the process repeats over and over. 44.) Swamp Fox - 09/01/2015

Jon, all you need now is some cold weather.
52.) Jon - 09/21/2015
Getting deer back on camera in there, had a decent buck the other night and some smaller ones during the day. Today it is a high of 74, it's starting to cool off a little.

Finally starting to get bucks during shootable daylight. I have the plot watcher in the food plot now so hope to see something. All the corn is down now and the weather is starting to cool off, maybe it's about to happen.

The clover plot is looking really healthy. The guy who planted it for me is coming in a few weeks to spray it to choke out the weeds and grass but otherwise, it's very healthy. The deer are pounding it every night.
