1.) Hunter - 08/03/2015
My Mathews DXT is giving me fits. 70lb bow, 28 inch draw, 80% letoff.
I've had it since they came out maybe 6 - 7 years ago and killed quite a few deer with it. Only shot it a little at the beginning of last season. About 2 months ago I get it out and start shooting. Seemed hard to pull and hold but I wrote it off as being out of shape and getting old! Thought I would build up my shooting muscles. About the same time, I also had string and cable replaced. Kept shooting but still seemed hard. It also feels like it wants to "shoot", no relief in hold. Just kind of feels like cam is not turning all the way over. We have one of those hanging type scales. I checked it and it was pulling about 68lbs but only 50% letoff. Everything measures "in spec." I thought maybe I would lessen the draw weight to see what would happen. I dropped it to 62lbs but it is still only about 50% letoff. Bow shoots accurate but it is not right. I started shooting an older Destroyer that is 60lb draw and 50% letoff and it is easy to shoot. Put my Blue Streaks through a chrono with both bows and Destroyer is 10fps faster (285 vs 275)

Any thoughts? I know Bullz-I has DXTs, maybe he can chime in.

Could the limbs be getting weak? Need to twist cable even though in spec?
I'm not very tech savy with bows so any ideas would be appreciated
2.) Jon - 08/03/2015
Cable length is wrong. Do you know who made the new strings?
3.) Deerminator - 08/03/2015
Cables
4.) Hunter - 08/04/2015
Don't know make of strings. Will twisting cable correct things?
5.) Triton Rich - 08/04/2015
I don't know mathews that well but there is likely a cam timing mark of some sort. Google it based on the year of the bow and make sure it lines up. It might well be that the cable is made wrong like Jon said but there is a chance that a few twists here and there could bring it back in.
6.) Triton Rich - 08/04/2015
You said the Destroyer was also 50% letoff. Was that a typo? That bow's IBO is around 20 fps faster than the DXT so your chrono results sound normal.
7.) crookedeye - 08/04/2015
spray some wd40 on youre cams..and make sure you work it in there..
8.) Swamp Fox - 08/04/2015
LOL...

Acorn-scented?
9.) crookedeye - 08/04/2015
by the way whats an old man like you pulling 70lbs??even billy cant pull that..
10.) Swamp Fox - 08/04/2015
It was the Destroyer that destroyed my shoulder a few years ago. Whichever was the faster, more macho of the two D bows they had out that year, a buddy of mine owned one. Naturally, it was set at 70 pounds. I tried to pull that bastard back and that was the end of me lifting things above my head, or dancing in nightclubs shouting "Woo!---Woo!"
11.) crookedeye - 08/04/2015
same thing happen to me.. while pulling back my 70 lb pse. I could never dance again with my right arm swaying above my head singing "night fever" by the gibbs brothers...

When I got my Destroyer, I decided to not be macho and get the 60 pounder. My shoulder is thanking me I'm sure. My dad was shooting at 60 pounds on his bow at the time but he almost passed out trying to draw my destroyer. I think it reaches peak weight about a quarter inch into the draw cycle :-) It's been good to me though.

Hunter, I see you lurking. Only you can turn this thread around at this point.

Otherwise, I can't be held responsible...

Hum...I've been told by fairly credible sources in the medical field that the primary cause of a failed shoulder tis the old 'one man Mac n' Smack'...:wink

Timing holes line up but maybe that is not absolute. Maybe I'll try twisting cable. Not that I know what I'm doing!
24.) Swamp Fox - 08/04/2015
Can't the synch holes/arrow test still line up even with an incorrect cable? But then again, what do I know?.

I'd re-string it.
25.) BULLZ-i - 08/04/2015
SO ARE YOU GETTING A FULL DRAW CYCLE? CAM ROLLS OVER OR NO? CHECK YOUR TIMING MARKS AND SEE HOW THEY ARE LINED UP. TAKE A PICTURE AND POST IT
Cable length is wrong. Do you know who made the new strings?
Jon is right. This is where you need to start. Take your cables and string off and measure them under some tension (put loop over nail or bolt and pull tight before measuring). If they aren't in spec, then anything else doesn't matter.

Start there.

Even on new strings, I measure them before installing. Eliminates the :cf: factor when things don't jive. Gives me peace of mind and eliminates all the second guessing after the fact.
29.) Deerminator - 08/05/2015
again, Ditto what Jon said.:hb:
30.) Jon - 08/05/2015
When I replace string sets on a bow, I always measure the old bow's draw weight and letoff. Then after installing the new string set, I do the same. If they aren't close, then I'll measure the new string and cables to see what's up.

Am I right on this or not?

Primarily interested in the answer as it regards solocams, but I'll take other info for general knowledge, just in case I ever need it, LOL.
32.) bluecat - 08/05/2015
I'm guessing yes. It would mask the real problem of string/cable length out of spec.

The only way I see that being possible is if the string is wrong also. This would mean that ATA, Brace and draw weight would all be messed up too. That's why I was thinking a few twists could fix Hunter's problem. I'm also suspicious of his scale if he is finding a second bow (destroyer) with the let-off drastically out of spec. I'm not nagging, but he never answered my question about that :tap::-)

Rich, I may have not have worded it right but the Destroyer is supposed to be 50% let-off. I was trying to say that it is easy to hold it at 50% let-off.
36.) Hunter - 08/08/2015
Ok guys, sorry for the delay with pics. You will be able to see that timing holes show problem

Brace height is good, ATA is good
37.) Hunter - 08/08/2015
So I guess maybe the cable is a little long. If so, can it be twisted to shorten it enough?
Or, is there something else that needs to be done?
38.) crookedeye - 08/08/2015
hunter you no the rules .... how are we suppose to make fun of you if you don't post a pick of yourself pointing at youre cam?? you no that's the first thing you do on here...
39.) Triton Rich - 08/09/2015
Cable is short but looks to me like it can be twisted in. Remove 1 twist from the cable and add 2 twists to the string. Since the string is twice as long (roughly) this should keep the specs close. Repeat that until it lines up. You can do 1/2 twist out of the cable and add 1 to the string for final adjustments when it gets close. When you get the timing right, you might have to tweak the ATA and brace a tiny bit. The Bowtech destroyer was only offered with 80% letoff so I'm still confused about that part.

41.) Jon - 08/10/2015
You might not be able to take that many twists out of the cable, give it a shot though. Good advice Rich, right on the money.
42.) Hunter - 08/10/2015
Thanks, guys! We'll see what happens :tu:
43.) bluecat - 08/10/2015
I still would want to know the length of cable and string before doing anything. The thought I had was possibly the cable and strings were made for an entirely different model. You might spend a whole bunch of time tweaking something that isn't going to work.

Removing them and checking/setting the correct length would be a good place to start too.
45.) Hunter - 08/10/2015
You guys were right on. Cable was twisted too short. 32 1/4 inch cable twisted to 32 inches. 32 1/4 is the correct length according to Mathews.

I untwisted and that put timing holes parallel to string. Let-off is good now.

All good now!
